Monitoring the resources we use to prevent ususing too much.

WORKING TOGETHERGovernments working together to reduce theimpacts of climate change and prevent risingtemperatures and emissions.

PROTECTIONCreating laws to protect oceans and wildlife, including protections for coral reefs, mangrove forests and breeding locations.

GREEN ACTIONSEncouraging people to play a part in reducingglobal warming, taking actions like

Millions of species of all shapes and sizes live in ouroceans. Plants, such as seaweed, algae andphytoplankton provide food for the shoals of fish thatcrowd coral reefs.

Corals are animals that look and behave more likeplants, using special algae to make themselves foodfrom sunlight and creating homes for lots of animals.

The deep oceans house weird and wonderful creaturesthat have adapted to exist in the dark, such asincredible fish that glow in the dark.

Turtles, dolphins, sharks and whales journey across theoceans in search of food and breeding sites. You cansee some pictures of the amazing species that live inour oceans above.

HOW ARE THINGS CHANGING?

DID YOU KNOW?The resources that oceansprovide are worth nearly 3 trillionUS dollars a year!

Over 80% of the world's oceanshaven’t been explored yet, whichmeans there could be thousandsof species that haven’t beendiscovered yet!

More than 3 billion people acrossthe world rely on the species, services and habitats that theoceans provide.

HOW CAN WE HELP?Scientists andconservationists aroundthe world are acting toprotect our oceans. Manypeople continue to studythe impacts that climatechange and humans arehaving, to figure out howbest we can help. This includes:

Climate change  This is causing sea levels to riseand oceans to get warmer (in 2018 the warmestocean temperature ever was recorded). Thisaffects the services that humans depend on,particularly the weather. Rising sea levels are alsowashing away the beaches that sea turtles neston.

Overfishing This puts fish and other species underhuge pressure, as species are taken more quicklythan they can regenerate.

Pollution Oceans are connected - this is importantas it means that animals can move between them, but so can pollution. Turtles and dolphins often gettangled in fishing nets that have been left behind, while fishing and tourist boats can damagehabitats when they drop their anchors.

Oceans are under threat from human activity. Some ofthe key threats are:

How far? Sea turtles travelthousands of miles, but usuallyreturn to the same beach theyhatched on to lay their ownclutch of eggs.
