Considerations

No “banger” or any other pyrotechnical device should ever be shot directly at a bear.

Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing a banger.

Never shoot from inside a vehicle, whether stationary or moving.

Bangers can be fire hazard.

Bears can become habituated to loud noises.

Pistol Type

Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing.

Always aim off to the side of the bear no matter the deterrents range.

Never shoot from inside a vehicle.

Screamers can be a fire hazard if used improperly.

Pistol type launchers are effective, practical, inexpensive and easy-to-use.

A pistol launcher can be pre-loaded with primers and safely carried.

Advanced planning is required to get the primers and deterrent cartridges into remote sites.

Cleaning Swing out chambered cylinder makes cleaning easy; all critical components are visible.

The more complicated firing mechanism makes cleaning difficult and some disassembly is required.

Capacity Five to seven shots. Six to ten shots.

Reloading Slow to reload using loose primers.

Faster to reload using spare preloaded clips.

Determining if loaded.

Swing out cylinder makes it easy to check if loaded,

An unloaded clip launcher looks identical to a loaded one. Determination requires that the clip be fully ejected.

Banger Considerations

No “banger” or any other pyrotechnical device should ever be shot directly at a bear.

Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing a banger.

Bangers can be a fire hazard. Never shoot from inside a vehicle, whether

stationary or moving. Bears can become habituated to loud noises.

Screamers

Makes a continuous loud screeching noise from the launcher muzzle out to approximately 83 to 100 yards.

The looping flight path makes it difficult to predict where the projectile will end up.

Wind can change the range or direction of the projectile.

Screamer Considerations

Always alert the bear of your location prior to firing a screamer. When firing screamers the shooter needs to compensate for the less-than predictable flight path. Screamers can be a fire hazard Never shoot from inside a vehicle, whether stationary or moving.

12 Gauge Shotgun Launcher

12-gauge pump action shotgun

12-gauge break action double barrel shotgun

The 12-gauge shotgun is the most versatile deterrent launcher.

Shotguns used for bear deterrence must have the following features:

3” chamber (s) smooth bore barrel(s) open or cylinder choke (no narrowing of the

barrel at the muzzle

12-gauge pump action shotgun

Limitations

In order to use a shotgun successfully bear responders must complete firearm safety training and have a valid firearms licence.

The presence of a firearm can give people a false sense of security.

12-gauge pump action shotgun

Break-action Shotgun

The break-action is the safest of all action types. The shooter can easily and safely check for barrel obstructions. The break-action shotgun is one of the easiest firearms to clean.

Safety

Action Release

Armed Back-up

When the 12-gauge break-action is used to fire eterrent rounds the shooter should be backed-up y a person with a firearm loaded with lethal ounds.

Pump-action Shotgun

The pump-action is the fastest manually operated action and the easiest to operate from the shoulder. The alignment of the action and the barrel makes it difficult to check for potential obstructions in the barrel.

Never empty the magazine by cycling the action.

• Fused projectile travels approx. 66 to 86 yards (200 to 260 feet) before exploding.

• Produces noise level of approximately 160 decibels.

12 Gauge Shell Crackers

• Effective range of noise greater than projectiles range

Capabilities

• Long range deterrent

• One year shelf life.

• Subject to dangerous goods shipping regulations.

• Potential fire hazard.

12 Gauge Shell Crackers

Limitations

Shell Cracker Considerations

• Shotgun be pointed up at an angle of forty-five degrees.

• Best achieved by firing from the hip position.
