AAE cosponsors endodontic symposium in San Antonio

The third annual Endodontic Sympo- sium for the Family Practitioner was held Nov 13-14 at the University of Texas dental school in San Antonio.

This course, cosponsored by the Ameri- can Association of Endodontists and the University of Texas Health Science Cen- ter, is an ongoing activity in continuing education of the AAE education commit- tee.

The meeting, attended by more than 70 dentists from the country's southwest, fea- tured three nationally recognized endodon- tists--Dr. Russell A. Grandich, associate professor of endodontics, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; Dr. James Guttuso, West Palm Beach, Fla; and Dr. Manuel I. Weisman, associate professor, Medical College of Georgia dental school, a n d practicing endodontist in Augusta, Ga.

Dr. Grandich, who also was course director, discussed the interrelationship of endodontics and restorative dentistry and stressed the restoration of the pulpless tooth in overall treatment planning. Dr. Guttuso illustrated the factors involved in evaluating success and prognosis following endodontic treatment, while Dr. Weisman concluded by detailing highlights of treat- ment of endodontic emergency situations, including trauma.

Henry J. Van Hassel

Dr. Van Hassel joins University of Maryland faculty

After a career in the Public Health Service, Dr. Henry J. Van Hassel returned July 1 to the Baltimore College of dental surgery, University of Maryland, as professor in the department of endodontics and assumed responsibilities as program director for advanced specialty education in endodontics.

A 1963 dental graduate of the Baltimore school, Dr. Van Hassel is president of the American Association of Endodontists.

During his PHS career, Dr. Van Hassel distinguished himself nationally and inter- nationally as an endodontist and is a recog- nized authority in pulpal pathophysiology. He has contributed to dental literature more than 75 times.

Following his dental training at the Baltimore school, Dr. Van Hassel received his NDS in endodontics and PhD in phy- siology at the University of Washington.
