NEWS AAE Public Awareness Program wins award The AAE and its public relations con- sultant, Public Communications Inc. (PCI), were awarded a Silver Trumpet from the Publicity Club of Chicago in its 1987 public relations awards competi- tion. The award was given in the divi- sion of public affairs and issues. It recognized the success of AAE's three-year public relations effort in in- creasing public awareness and under- standing of endodontics and the role of the endodontists in oral health care. International News On October 16, 17 and 18, the So- ciedad de Endodoncia de Santiago de Chile held its second International Convention. AAE member Dr. Pabla Barrientos presided over the conven- tion. Primary topics included pain, traumatized teeth, open apices, stress and AIDS. Two continuing education courses were conducted before the convention. Dr. Juan Hugo Gutierrez (Chile) lectured on endodontics for the general practitioner and Drs. Arturo Lopez Begazo (Peru), Arturo Martinez (Spain), Mario Roberto Leonardo and Homero Rodrigues (Brazil) and Carlos Spielberg (Argentina) spoke about ad- vanced endodontics for specialists. Ms. Ruth Mugalian of PCl and Dr. Michael A. Heuer, Immediate Past President (far right) receive the Silver Trumpet Award from a representative of the Publicity Club of Chicago. The Asian Pacific Endodontic Con- federation (A.P.E.C.) will hold its third conference January 27, 1988 in New Delhi, India. A.P.E.C., organized in 1985, is dedicated to developing and maintaining high standards of endo- dontic research, teaching and clinical practice by cultivating and fostering professional relationships throughout the region. The Second World Dental Confer- ence, JERUSALEM - 1988, will be held June 26-30. For information contact Dr. A. Stabholz, Chairman, P.O. Box 983, Jerusalem 91009, Israel. The forum was organized in response to emerging problems among general practitioners and root canal specialists concerning the qual- ity and evaluations of root canal therapy and its meta-endodontic (periapical) results. Members who par- ticipated in the forum include Dr. Ger- man Vaile (Mexico), Dr. Yury Kuttler (Mexico), AAE Past-president Dr. Stephen F. Schwartz (Texas), Dr. Jack A. Weichman (California), Dr. Mario R. Leonardo (Brazil), and Dr. Kaare Langeland (Connecticut). In Memoriam Dr. Seiichi Matsumiya passed away on September 25, 1987. Dr. Matsumiya was a former dean, honorary dean and professor emeritus of The Tokyo Dental College. He was 78 years old. Dr. Jeffrey Hoover, immediate past- president of the Houston Academy of Endodontics, presents a gift of $875 to Dr. Richard M. Madden, Chairman of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Texas in Houston. The gift will help fund graduate student pilot research projects. Dr. John R. Luding- ton Jr., Director of the Advanced Education Program in Endodontics and also the newly elected Program Chair- man of the Houston Academy of En- dodontists, looks on.
