    JANUARY 2015

Our cover features Artisan Patisserieowner Simon, who has recently returned to the popular Horshameatery after setting up a similar business in London. The image is taken upstairs at thepatisserie, in Market Square, with thelighting spheres adding a little colourand interest to the backdrop.Owners Simon and Steven display intriguing prints by Lidia de Pedro (theeagle-eyed will be amused) but in thebackground here you will see a specialreproduction of a famous FernandoBotero painting of Marie Antoinette. The painting inspired ArtisanPatisseriesmotto of Let Them Eat Cake. This photo as one of only a few realcontenders for the cover, as we do nothave many new features this month. A huge chunk of AAH is devoted to ourReview of 2015, and whilst it featuresmany previously unpublished photos, none were worthy of the cover Frsttime around! We did consider a shot of three staDmembers at Keepers Kennels for thecover. Ultimately, it missed out because it didnt really reGect whatthey do. Nigel Emery, who operatesNifty Gallery in Storrington (well wortha visit) was another option. We also brieGy discussed a collage ofshots to represent the annual review. However, that would go against ourtradition one photo cover format!

Were supposed to have resolutions at thistime of year, arent we? Pretend that welldo something big or good, but comeDecember, well have actually spent more timewatching okay TV shows.Like The Big Bang Theory or Come Dine With Me.I did make some resolutions whilst away in theLake District over Christmas. The important onewas to sort out my troublesome knee, which mostrecently gave way as I played football with ten-year-olds.Wearing a knee brace, I managed several lengthyclimbs during my week up north, which gave meconFdence that the injury was healing. However, only moments ago, I suDered a setback. I set up a game to play whilst I thought about whatto write in this very column. The game involvedkicking two socks (rolled into a ball) between twoslippers - one placed in my oEce and one at theopposite end of the hallway. The idea is to Gick the sockball into the slippers inthe fewest number of shots, with a childs plasticScooby Doo cup utilised as a tricky obstacle.Sadly, in the semi-Fnals of my sockball World Cup(against the German, can you believe)my knee gaveway yet again, as I played a Gick shot in the hope ofscoring 5 to take the game to penalties. Not only does this latest injury put paid to my admittedly narrow chances of playing for England(my last actual game came as a 36-year-old substitute for Ashington FC) but it seriously dentsmy New Years Resolution - just two days into 2016. Honestly, it would just be much safer to sit downand watch Gogglebox.

I had also hoped that, during my walks in the LakeDistrict, I would have time to consider another ofmy resolutions - a book idea Ive had for severalyears but havent had the opportunity to give

much time to. Im just too busy messing about withslippers.I was able to get a decent internet connection onone day and started researching my book, which isbased around the true story of an unusual spate ofanimal attacks. Yeah, like Jaws, but not with sharks! But I was distracted by dozens of incredible relatedstories on the interweb. Stories like the Bengal Tigerof Champawat, who is estimated to have killed 436people in Nepal and India. Or the Sloth bear ofMysore that killed at least 12 people in India in the1950s. A sloth!I was too fascinated by these gruesome tales to develop any constructive outlines for my ownbook. However, I vowed that the following day Iwould take my dog, Otis, up into the hills andspend the day conjuring narrative.

But it was not to be. A short time later, my eight-year-old son inadvertently injured Otis after he spotted a lengthy log, placed precariously on a hill, and found the temptation to push it into thestream too great! After a Gying visit to the vet, Otis - who was in thewrong place at the wrong time - was patched upand spent a few days licking his wounds. Myplanned day of book plotting was replaced by aday of marbles and Top Trumps.

So, I guess my point is that resolutions are great, but sometimes life - be it in the form of a rolled upsock or a huge rolling tree trunk - gets in the way. But if you have some stories to tell at the end of theyear, well thats not bad, is it?

    ONE TO WATCH FEATURES

These features tend to revolve aroundteenagers making their mark in sport(gymnast Harry Harrod, runner Orla Brothers) or the creative arts (Plm-maker SamSutterlin, poet Philippa Crundwell). In 2015, we particularly enjoyed meetingwriter and blogger Jack Edwards, and promising computer programmer CharlieMaclean, as they have been able to educateus in modern technology. We must accept that, whilst its day may notyet be over, the printed magazine formatadopted by AAH has a sell-by date. So it wasinteresting to hear the ways in which Jackconnects with young readers on 21st

century web-based formats. In Charlies case,it was intriguing to hear him talk aboutchanges in the way IT is taught, as schoolshave to adapt to the fact that some pupilsare bored by what is on the curriculum. They know it all already and want to presson with more complex challenges.

But our favourite One to Watch feature camenot from a teenage talent, but Jack Lane, who wrote and starred in one man show,Wisdom of a Fool. It was a meticulous production - not only our favourite of theyear but The Capitol managers too - andearned a deserved standing ovation.

They were MartynDavis (Labour), Darrin Green (Green), JimRae (Independent) Jim Duggan (PeaceParty), Morwen Millson (Liberal Democrats),Roger Arthur (UKIP), James Smith (Something New) and Jeremy Quin (Conservative). Whilst the interviews madefor interesting reading, they had little impact on the overall result as the Torieswon, as expected, with an increased majority.

What with all the dark news headlinesthe Prst part of theyear had brought, wedecided to have somefun with the general election. Firstly, thoseof a mischievous nature meanderedaround town centres

  • Adults cant help but feel a bit jealouswhen taking children along to theDinosaur Island adventure play area inSouthwater Country Park. Its simply so much better than the play parkswe experienced as children.I recall that one of the most popular featuresin the old Horsham Park play area was a series of concrete pipes. Climbing throughthem, you could sometimes learn new wordsthat the teenagers had scribbled whilstdowning cheap cider on a cold, wet Fridaynight. Was there, once upon a time, a consultationduring which children of that generation demanded a play park bearing all the hallmarks of a construction site? A play park themed around prehistoric monsters certainly seems a better idea...

With special eNects including an active volcano, red hot lava Qows, a tar quagmire, adinosaur swamp and a prehistoric jungle, theplay area has attracted a huge number of visitors since it was opened in July.Improved parking at the Southwater CountryPark site and a dinosaur themed makeover atthe caf have also added to the enjoyment ofthe experience.

Now, the Dinosaur Island has earned Horsham District Councils Parks and Countryside team international recognitionby winning the 2015 International Green AppleAward for Environmental Best Practice. The award was presented to Anna Chapman(Countryside Development OOcer) and CllrJonathan Chowen (Cabinet Member ofLeisure and Culture, and Parks) at a ceremonyin the Palace of Westminster in November. Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: "I am delighted that the team at Horsham District Councils Parks & Countryside Department has been recognised by thisprestigious award and my congratulationsgo out to all those involved in the planning, development and launch of ourfantastic new play area.It is an imaginative play space that commemorates a past age and it is sure tokeep children entertained for many yearsin the future. It is part of our vision and ambition to update Southwater Country Park as anoutdoor sports and leisure area for the enjoyment of all our local residents."

    IGUANODON INSPIRED

The inspiration for the park came from anIguanodon dinosaur fossil found in theclay in Southwater in 1920. Fact and Pgures are a key feature of the Dinosaur Island, developed in conjunctionwith eibe Play Ltd, a leading designer andmanufacturer of outdoor playgroundequipment. The eibe Play Ltd Managing Director commented: It has been uplifting towatch Dinosaur Island come to fruition, aproject which absolutely embraces all thatis important about the past, present andfuture of our world. Being able to share the experience of receiving our Green Apple Awards alongside members of Horsham DistrictCouncil was a real privilege. The winning entry now goes forward forfurther judging and the possibility of representing the UK in the Brussels-led European Business Awards for the Environment.

The hot national topicwas immigration, as thousands of peoplemade their way intoEurope through TheBalkans or even theMediterranean. Theasylum seekers werecoming from countries such as

Syria and Afghanistan to escape war andconQict. Europeans reacted to the crisis indiNerent ways and initially elements of theBritish media reacted with pathetic partisan panic, with headlines that wentbeyond national NIMBYism. It took thebody of Aylan Kurdi, a three-year old Syrian boy who washed up on a Turkishbeach, to change perceptions.

  • MY STORY SO FAR FEATURES

The My Story So Far features are much-lovedby our readers and we take pride inproducing interesting and varied stories. The idea stemmed from The Observers This MuchI Know feature. Ive always enjoyed these articles,as they tend to supply little nuggets of opinionand wisdom. Obviously, The Observers interviews tend to bewith household names. I wanted to tell the fascinating stories of local people - that we dontknow much about - whilst combining those samelittle nuggets within each feature. I dont want the articles ever to read as I did this, then I did that as I like an emotional voice tocome through. I think we achieve that more oftenthan not. For me, WW2 bomber navigator Ron Warburton(Octobers AAH) by-passing his memories ofbombing a German city with the words And thenthere was Dresden...ooh, Dresden needed nothingelse adding..Im sure that the vast majority of people we interview are really pleased that they have doneit, and its allowed us to meet fascinating localcharacters like Andrew Bernardi (pictured withhis Stradivarius) as well as ordinary people whohave done extraordinary things at war. However, my favourite interview this year waswith Matt Charman, the former Forest boy who isnow a script writer in huge demand in Hollywood. Already, his is an incredible story!

    Andrew Bernardi

    Ron Warburton

MATT CHARMAN, THE NATIONAL, LONDON:This was a fun shoot, despite having to drag lighting and power packsup to London on the train. Despite the obvious 'city' background touse, I went for a simple, clean shot of one of the concrete pillars outside The National Theatre on South Bank,. There is a view

through to a painted red wall, adding depth to the image.

The Prime Minister did whatto a pig? Really? Okay, so also this month scientists announced the discovery ofa new pre-human species ofhominid that existed 2.8 million years ago. Which isinteresting, but not asinteresting as DavidCameron (allegedly) putting

his private parts in a hogs head in a bizarre toPOxford club initiation! In other news, hundreds ofpeople died in a stampede whilst on a pilgrimageto Mecca, but back to that main story about Piggate. Well, of course hes denied the allegation - its not something youd admit to. But,well, its something he might have done...

    Meanwhile, here in Horsham...

Horsham District Council vowed to invest12.3m to build a new sports centre at Broadbridge Heath. It will be developed next tothe existing leisure centre and will include anoutdoor running track, multi-use games areas, asix court sports hall, an 80-station gym, cycle studio, three Rtness studios, sensory room, changing rooms, caf and catering facility.

AAH reported on the Horsham Battle of theBands competition, held in the Human NatureGarden in Horsham Park. The main competition -which is now well-supported by separateacoustic and covers nights - was won by TeamNew Band from Brighton.

    SEPTEMBER 2015

As Piggate died down, weneeded another political Rgure to mock as it becameincreasingly easy and acceptable to do so. So theBritish media gave air timeto the views of DonaldTrump as he launched intoamusing, if often illogical, rants against everyone from

Prisoners of War, to Asians, to Rosie O Donnell. Asthe year closed out, he upped the ante as Mexicansand Muslims were caught in the crossRre. Closerto home, we had Jeremy Corbyn, the new leaderof old Labour to laugh at. Nice jumper! mockedIan Hislop on Have I Got News For You, when shown a photo of Corbyn wearing a plain jumper.Yeah, putting the political boot in by dissingwool! However, soon some people realised thattheyd always wanted more ordinary people atthe higher echelons of British politics, so perhapsthis bike-riding tramp-like Rgure was a welcomechange.

Usually, when it comes to our businessfeatures, we seek out independents thatoPer a unique service to the people ofthe district. Its a good way of introducing readers to people and products that they may not otherwise know about. For example, we wrote about Garlic Wood Farmin Steyning, which sells 100% organic beef direct from the Knepp estate, and The VirtualFlight Centre in Coolham, where the public canSy in a real Boeing 737 cockpit, complete withcabin section!A favourite feature of ours was atLeathermark69, where Mark Peckham createstooled leather, primarily for custom-made motorbike enthusiasts. However, the biggest business event of theyear was the opening of John Lewis at Homeand a new Waitrose store in Horsham.Lengthy queues formed outside as townsfolkawaited the grand opening of the 11th JohnLewis at Home store, taking up 43,000 squarefoot of a building co-owned with Waitrose.Once the ribbon-cutting formalities had beencarried out, many shoppers quickly made theirway to the cafe, suggesting that they had simply wanted to say that they were there on

opening day. One to tell the grandchildrenabout? One elderly curmudgeon, it is alleged, loudlydeclared John Lewis goods as overpriced sentimentality for mums in Range Rovers andwas swiftly banished to the moon.

The Horsham store boasts the Rrst John LewisHome Hub, a dedicated area bringing togetherall of John Lewishome design services, and showcasing the retailers home interiorproducts through a display of 11 rooms. Meanwhile, the new Waitrose is more thantwice the size of the old store in Piries Place, which closed its doors in July, the day beforethe new one opened. New concepts include a juice bar, wine andbeer bar, a bakery and an extensive wine department. Other features include a new eat-in area where customers will be able toenjoy tapas, deli platters and freshly bakedgoods. After six months, the new stores are provingextremely popular. However, it may be thatother parts of the town do not enjoy much radiated glow from John Lewis until thepedestrianised areas linking it to Bishopric aremade safer and more visually appealing.

    MUSIC FEATURES

Our music features are tricky to puttogether, as often we cannot attendon concert night as the presence of aphotographer is too intrusive. So weve beento an awful lot of rehearsals! This year, weve featured old hand WillieAusten, percussion guitarist Mark Ben Wilsonand promising pop/folk band Route 42. Wealso watched the Battle of the Bands Rnal inHorshams Human Nature Garden, with newfaces well known on the local music circuitproviding the popular and long-runningcompetition with fresh ideas. Team New Band were deserving winners, although once again the acoustic competition(won by Jodie Munday) attracted just as manyentrants and arguably a bigger crowd, reSecting current trends.

AAH also featured the likes of Classical Folk, and Slinfold Concert Band, and carried an extensive interiew with Andrew Bernardi, organiser of the Shipley Arts Festival. Do keep an eye on the festival website for details of the 2016 programme, as there aresome real gems in there. The mooted return of the Barns Green MusicFestival was postponed, but Rudgwick againprovided a full festival programme and theHorsham Garden Music Festival catered for allmanner of musical fancies. Meanwhile, in the town centre, some thingsnever change; Danny the Busker still seems tobe playing Hey Jude every other song, unless

Ive been very unfortunate with my timing!

We asked a few other musicians and event organisers about their favourite events ofthe year...

Sylvia Akagi, Classical FolkThe local gig I enjoyed most in 2015 was TheFull Shanty at Horsham Folk Club in DenneRoad. They are a shanty (a capella) band, whosing with gusto, but have lovely harmoniesand exude an infectious humour.

Willie Austen, MusicianMy favourite event was Rudgwick Music Festival, which is held every August. It is agreat event with lots of bands, old and new, playing until late. The organisers put on a fantastic show, all in aid of charity.

Gary Holder, Live music event organiserMy 2015 highlights would be any one of theclassical concerts staged by Andrew Bernardifor the Shipley Arts Festival. I went to several, and all showcased high quality musicianship.

Nick Mowat, General Manager, The CapitolIn terms of The Capitol programme, Id say myfavourite show was Wisdom of a Fool, writtenand performed by Jack Lane. An uncannyportrayal of the incomparable Norman Wisdomin a show with a really big heart. Outside ofThe Capitol, The Last Tango with Vincent Simone and Flavia Caccia at The Theatre
