BUSINESS BUSINESS AFTER AFTER HOURSHOURS

November has arrived and there are several upcoming Chamber events which I want to highlight and invite you to attend.

The Ag Appreciation Breakfast is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 7:00 a.m. at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center. Jim Richards is the guest speaker. Jim and his family are integral members of our community and the epitome of how to run a successful business for several generations. I am sure everyone will enjoy Jim’s talk as we appreciate our farmers and agricultural community on November 10th. The food is always terrifi c and the conversation lively. Please plan on attending, for tickets please contact the Chamber offi ce.

The November Forum Luncheon is scheduled for November 25th, with Howie Howard, the owner of Deluxe Brewing, as our speaker. This will be an informative meeting as we learn about the brewing industry that is reshaping Albany and the Pacifi c Northwest.

The December Membership Forum Luncheon is scheduled for December 16, 2015. The speaker is Jeff Precourt, publisher of the Albany Democrat Harold. We will announce the winners of the membership contest with the fi rst, second and third place winners taking home some fantastic gifts. All Chamber members, as well as their employees, are eligible to participate. If you need more information, please contact Tom Leggate at the Chamber offi ce.

At the last Board meeting in October, the Board discussed the Horizon Initiative: Chamber 2025 and the Eight Infl uences Shaping the Next Decade for Chambers of Commerce. Your Board is working on a long range plan for the Chamber through 2025.

The political season is ramping up, especially next year’s presidential election. In addition, we have many state and local issues that need your attention, as we approach the upcoming 2016 Oregon Legislative Session. I anticipate that the hot button issues will include the liberal initiatives promoting a $15 mandatory minimum wage, mandatory paid maternity leave and signifi cant personal and corporation income tax increases, all of which infringe upon our

liberty and freedom t o o p e r a t e o u r b u s i n e s s e s . W e need the help of our members to resist and defend against such initiatives and to promote pro-business legislation.

Please take a moment to study the recent state-wide job data. There was a signifi cant loss of jobs in the private sector, and a continuing signifi cant increase of jobs in the public sector. The public sector continues to grow and prosper, whereas the private sector continues to struggle in job creation. Public sector jobs create additional demands for higher tax revenue to pay for the government positions. The private sector has been and always will be the main life blood for any community. We all need to promote and foster sound economic policies to promote the creation of private sector jobs.

This month’s trivia question is set forth below:

The Albany Regional Museum building is located at 136 SE Lyon Street in downtown Albany. However, the Museum Building was moved from its original location by a team of horses with the building being rolled on logs to its present location. Where was the original location of the Museum Building?

Enjoy November and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Printing & Communication DayStudents from SAHS and WAHS attended Printing and Visual Communications Career Day at Oregon Web Press brought to our area by PPI, The NW Visual Communications Industries Association.

Students had a plant production tour and learned about careers relating to the printing industry including printing operations, production and technology, sales, paper and graphic and digital design. Randy Leopard, Production Manager, shared with the students that…”the best skill to have is the ability to show up on the job daily, and then to do your best. Much of the production work can be learned on the job and that print is not dead! In fact more niche publications are being made than ever before.” WAHS Senior Jayden Arellano said: "It was so fun to be able to talk directly with the presenters and ask questions. I enjoyed the tour and how willing everyone was to talk to us and ask about our interests."

PPI runs a poster/scholarship contest for high school and college students and information can be found at ppiassoication.org.

Ian Dunlap , West Linn Paper talks about prepress

Eric “Howie” HowardEric “Howie” Howard and his wife, Jamie, are the owners of Deluxe Brewing and Sinister Distilling, Albany’s first brewstillery, a production brewery and distillery located along the Willamette River. Howie was born in Dallas, Ore., and lived in several Oregon towns before his family landed in Redmond. He graduated from Redmond High School, and attended Oregon State University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. But engineering wasn’t his calling. He left after a year and landed at Mt. Bachelor where he worked on the lifts and got the perks of snowboarding all the time. After working at Bachelor for a year, he decided he needed to get serious. He was always very mechanical, so he went back to school at Universal Technical Institute in Phoenix.

After school, Howie moved to Portland and began his career as an auto mechanic. Howie and Jamie met at an OSU football game in October of 2001 and they were married in 2002. He worked for Sunset Imports for three years. After Jamie became pregnant, they packed up and headed to Albany to be close to her family.

Howie started homebrewing in 2005. Jamie encouraged his passion and got him a Christmas gift of membership to the Heart of the Valley Homebrewers club. Howie did more and more brewing and moved quickly onto an all-grain system. He won several awards for his beer and became more active in the club. He was elected President and held the position for three years.

In 2011, the couple began the journey of starting their own craft brewery and distillery. After two years of acquiring f u n d i n g , f i n d i n g e q u i p m e n t a n d resurrecting the Borden Building, which had sat empty for more than 10 years, the businesses are now in production. Deluxe Brewing is producing three fl agship lagers: a Pre-Prohibition Pilsner, an Amber Lager and a Schwarzbier, plus many seasonals. The brewery is using a 15-barrel system and is available in establishments in the mid-Willamette Valley. They have a tasting room that is open Tuesday through Sunday. Sinister Distilling Company is using a traditional whiskey pot still from Portugal to produce their newly released Howard’s Hopped Up Gin, fi ne whiskeys that are aging, and a Grappa coming this fall.

“896 Kilometers of Grace: My Journey Across the Camino de Santiago”

Looking back it would seem that wondering and wandering have long been themes of my journey. I wandered from a small town in Eastern Oregon to Oregon State University, largely because a strong willed friend decided that was where I should go. Wondering what I would do with my life and not having an answer, I decided upon a Liberal Arts degree. Shortly after college graduation I married a farmer from the Silverton Hills and several years later we began our family.

Three daughters later, I again began to wonder what I was going to be when I grew up. As our youngest entered first grade, I started my seminary journey. Seven years after I began the seminary wandering I was called to pastoral ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Silverton. Seven more years down the road, I was given the gift of a three month Sabbatical. The centerpiece of that time was spent on the Camino de Santiago, a 890 kilometer journey from the south of France, over the Pyrenees to the ‘end of the earth’ on Spain’s western coast. Those 36 days on the way gave me one of the greatest gifts of all, space to simply be. It was been a year since I returned from the walk of my life and my work continues to give me abundant opportunities to wander and to wonder.

Perfect for the holidays!

• If you use a cash register, have a calculator or non-electrical option on hand.

• Consider buying and installing a backup generator for critical equipment.

• Keep emergency lighting in working order. • Put together an outage kit with fl ashlights,

radios, food and water.

To report an outage or receive an outage update, call toll free at 1-877-508-5088. Stay away from any downed power lines – call 911 immediately.

Golden TicketGolden TicketMalah Peterson Founder/ Co-Owner

Personal Background: Married to my husband Tom for 53 years, we have 3 sons and 6 grandchildren. Two of our sons, Tommy and Steve, work in the business and will be taking it over. We have owned 3 businesses in our married life and in 1994 I decided to begin doing custom embroidery. During that time I also worked for a major decorative thread company, traveling and teaching seminars to home sewers. When the embroidery busness grew I had to quit that job and devote my time to A Stitchin’ Time. I enjoy quilting, gardening, and DIY projects. I also have sung and played the piano professionally and currently play the piano for our church.

Business Marketing Niche: We started out specializing in small custom projects for small businesses who couldn’t afford to invest a lot of money in identity clothing. However, we now also do large orders, using a multi-head machine. Our services have expanded into screen printing and direct to garment printing, utilizing the latest state-of-the-art equipment to duplicate 5 color process without heavy layering of ink. The thing I love about our business is the relationships we develop with our customers, many who have become friends. We consider our business a ministry God has given us to make our community a better place. Biggest Issue Facing Albany: I believe one of the biggest issues is educating the public, including businesses and government agencies, on the value of shopping locally, rather than on the internet or in another city. The money invested here stays here.

Chamber Involvement: A member since 1994 I have served on the Albany Business Extravaganza Committee, co-chaired the Greeters Committee, served on the Board of Directors, and am a faithful attendee at Greeters every Thursday. I feel my membership in the Albany Chamber is the best money I have ever invested in advertising.

Albany Chamber Youth Leadership

Our Youth Leadership students got a behind-the-scenes look at Albany’s local and city government this month. They met with many departments at City Hall, toured Fire Station 11 and the Linn County Jail and after lunch at Izzy’s met with District Attorney Doug Marteeny. This was a great opportunity for the kids to learn more about local government.
