Dear Students,
Welcome to Aalen University!
We are located in the Southern German state of
Baden‐Wür emberg and were founded in 1963 as a
State Engineering School. In 1971 we became a Uni‐
versity of Applied Sciences. Today, 5000 Students from
more than 60 na ons enjoy their studies at the Univer‐
sity’s schools of Chemistry, Electronics & Computer
Science, Management & Business Sciences, Mechani‐
cal Engineering & Materials Science and Op cs &
Mechatronics.
Our University is fully commi ed to the imple‐
menta on of the European Bologna Process and has
already switched its course offerings from the tradi‐
onal German four‐year degrees to Bachelor’s and
Master’s. Renowned for its intense research ac vi es
Aalen University also facilitates effec vely the transfer
of technology to regional industries and accompanies
their skilled employees and managers by its own Ca‐
reer and Start‐Ups Centre.
Being a member of Aalen University means be‐
ing a member of the world: Interna onal rela ons are
one of its trademarks. Flourishing partnerships to 90
universi es exist around the globe. The exchange of
scien sts and students from all over the world enrich‐
es the Aalen campus and region day by day.
All courses of studies are regularly evaluated
and updated according to innova ve educa onal and
scien fic insights, specific needs of the regional indus‐
tries and according to interna onal academic stand‐
ards. As a result Aalen University comprises excellent
study courses with highly mo vated staff, modernized
equipment and progressive major fields of studies
such as Technical Edi ng, Interna onal Technical Sales
Management and Molecular Biotechnology. Study
offerings such as Optoelectronics, Audiology and Op‐
tometry are almost unique in Germany and possess a
truly na onal reputa on, thus complemen ng Aalen
University’s strong reputa on in engineering fields.
Newer study fields such as Computer Sciences and
Business contribute strongly today to Aalen Universi‐
ty’s educa onal por olio and are being con nuously
developed.

Academic Calendar
You will live and learn at one of the biggest universi‐
es of applied sciences in Baden‐Wür emberg,
strongest in research together with more than
4,200 students from more than 60 countries in a
cultural, spor ve, vaca on‐oriented region. With
67,000 inhabitants, Aalen is able to offer an array of
opportuni es, having the characteris cs of a big
city while maintaining its small town charm. Due to
Aalen’s proximity to many of German’s most fa‐
mous sights, you can easily take day trips to
Stu gart, Munich, Ulm, Augsburg and Nuremberg.
Aalen provides a number of recrea onal facili es,
from sports centres to tennis courts, riding halls, an
ice ska ng rink and even ski li s. Modern and clas‐
sic music concerts are regularly held in the city of
Aalen. Amateurs of theatre will also be more than
sa sfied with the Aalen Theatre. Live music fes vals
with varying types of music are featured in the bars
and pubs. A par cular highlight is the yearly Jazz
Fes val bringing the “crème de la crème“ of world‐
famous Jazz musicians to Aalen.
With its twin ci es in the UK, France, Hungary and
Turkey and its yearly interna onal fes vals, Aalen
has proven to possess a most friendly environment
for foreign students. In 2005 the city of Aalen won
the Award for Germany’s Friendliest Immigra on
Office, granted jointly by the Alexander von Hum‐
boldt Founda on and the Donors’ Associa on for
the Promo on of Sciences and Humani es in Ger‐
many. The Award for the Friendliest Immigra on
Office is granted to authori es who have shown to
be par cularly open, flexible and helpful in their
treatment of foreign academics and students.

MOST KIND
Programme
MOST KIND: Mentoring OST‐Wür emberg —
Koopera ve Integra on Nicht‐Deutscher
Studierender
MOST KIND Programme is a project of the state uni‐
versi es East Wür emberg (Aalen University, Uni‐
versity of Coopera ve Educa on Heidenheim, PH
Schwäbisch Gmünd and Schwäbisch Gmünd Univer‐
sity) in suppor ng the integra on of interna onal
students into universi es, society and working envi‐
ronment. The programme is funded by DAAD under
the PROFIN project.
The project measures include student conference,
German language courses, engaging student resi‐
dence hall tutors, intercultural training for universi‐
ty’s employees and tutors, excursions, sport events,
and internet integra on pla orm.
Partners of MOST KIND Programme are not only the
four major state universi es of East Wür emberg,
but also Studentenwerk Ulm, Jugendwerk Aalen,
the city of Aalen, Agentur für Arbeit, Kino am
Kocher, ISA e.V., and EKHG Aalen.

Buddy Programme of
Aalen University
The buddy system facilitates both the social integra on and the adapta on phase to the new academic
environment of the interna onal students in Aalen University. Specifically this programme provides a
method where an exchange or interna onal full‐ me student has a “buddy” who is paired up with them
for the semester or year. For exchange students from Aalen University’s , it is important to be able to inte‐
grate quickly due to the limited amount of me. Even though each exchange students are being taken
care of by their supervising faculty member, it is always a concern; how to provide enough care for the
exchange students both academically and emo onally. Because o en the fear of the exchange students
and limited resources could prevent the intensive contact.

Depending on your personal tastes, you have the choice of living either in one of the student residence
halls or in off‐campus private accommoda on. Each has its advantages and disadvantages based on
price, size, loca on, ease of arrangement, opportuni es to meet other students, etc., so you should
consider carefully which op on is best for you.

In order to book a room in the residency halls, we need the filled‐in “Applica on for Student Housing”
before your arrival in Aalen. Please make your choice a er reading the following descrip ons. Upon re‐
ceiving the “Applica on for Student Housing”, we will reserve your room.
Four residence halls are available for student housing, but only two of them are easily accessible to ex‐
change students. Also available throughout Aalen are private accommoda ons. These op ons are de‐
scribed later on in this page.
And if you arrive on the weekend or a er the IRO closes for the day, there are also hotels and youth hos‐
tels available for short‐term stays.
!!! IMPORTANT !!! IMPORTANT !!!
The ren ng contracts for the residence halls are always for a whole semester (March 1 to August 31 or
September 1 to February 28), which means that you have to rent and pay for a room for six (6) months,
no ma er how long you actually stay. In addi on to this, to reserve a room, a deposit must be trans‐
ferred. Alloca on of the rooms will then be made upon a first‐come, first‐served basis. Two months be‐
fore the end of the ren ng period (which is always 6 months), you will receive a form with which you can
extend your lease on your room in the residence hall by another semester (Verlängerungsantrag).
Private Accommoda on
There is plenty of private housing and private student residence halls available in Aalen. The monthly rent
ranges between € 150,‐ for a room without a shower and € 390,‐ for a more luxurious room. At the Regis‐
ter’s Office (“Studentensekretariat”), you can consult a file with offers upon your arrival and then choose
the accommoda on that fits your taste the best.
If you want the IRO to help to reserve a room for you before your arrival, you should write us well before
your arrival, describing what type of room you expect with minimum and maximum rent ranges, distance
to the university (maybe depending on owning a car), if you expect or prefer inexpensive and simple or if
you require a higher standard of living, if you prefer to share with other students, etc. As many details as
possible will make our part of the process easier. The fewer amount of details provided could lead to a
disappointment when you first arrive.
We would also like to draw your a en on to the fact that it is not easy to find private accommoda on for
only two or three months. Private housing is preferable for students who are planning to stay for longer
periods of me.
There are also a variety of students offering accommoda ons on our website, as well as adver sing here
at the university. They are usually looking for one addi onal flatmate. We welcome you to peruse these
offerings at your leisure and again, we are ready to help you, should you encounter language or other
problems.
There are also other aspects to consider, such as whether the rent includes u li es, or whether the
apartment comes furnished, in addi on to other details involved in ren ng an apartment. You should
keep these aspects in mind if you are considering private housing. The student residence halls include
these features already.
How to get to Aalen
from the airport
We are really looking forward to welcoming you to Aalen University! To make it a li le easier to find us,
we have provided you with some direc ons from the airport in Frankfurt, Stu gart, and Munich.
From Frankfurt to Aalen:
The Frankfurt airport (Fernbahnhof) has its own train sta on. It is located in Terminal 1, B Concourse,
Level 0. It is possible to take a direct train to Stu gart and then transfer to a train towards Aalen. There
are trains that leave the airport towards Stu gart hourly. You can buy a cket at any red cket ma‐
chines, which are posi oned in the sta on. The cket machines can be used in different languages, just
press the flag for the language that you want. You can also print out a trip i nerary so that you know
which pla orm you need to go to. You can also purchase your train cket ahead of me at
www.bahn.de.
From Stu gart to Aalen:
The Stu gart airport has a metro sta on. Follow the green “S” to find the Metro. You must buy the
Metro cket before you enter the train pla orm. It will be about a 30 minute ride on the Metro. Take
the Metro to Stu gart’s main train sta on (Hauptbahnhof). Once you arrive to the main train sta on,
follow the signs “zu den Zügen” (to the trains). You must buy a cket to Aalen. You can buy a cket at
any red cket machines, which are posi oned throughout the sta on. The cket machines can be used
in different languages, just press the flag for the language that you want. You can also print out a trip
i nerary so that you know which pla orm you need to go to. You can purchase a train cket ahead of

From Munich to Aalen:
The Munich airport has a metro sta on. Follow the green “S” to find the Metro. S1 and S8 will take you

Once you arrive in Aalen:
There are a few op ons for you once you arrive at the train sta on in Aalen to get to the Interna onal
Rela ons Office.
Taxi: Most of the me there are taxis wai ng outside of the train sta on. But if not, the taxi centre num‐
ber is: (+49)736162500
Once you have a taxi, tell the driver “Gartenstraße 135” (the visi ng address of the Interna onal Rela‐
ons Office; Postal Address is Beethovenstrasse 1) and he/she will drive you to our office.
Bus: There is a bus sta on just across the street from the train sta on. To get to our office, you can take
bus number: 27, 28, 37. You must walk to “Buss eg 2” (Bus stop 2) in order to get these buses. You
must tell the bus driver “OVA/Gartenstraße”. It will be the 3rd stop from the train sta on. The cost is
1,80 €. Once you get off the bus, you must cross the street and turn right. Our office will be the first
building on the le .
Walk: It will take about 20 minutes to walk from the train sta on to our office. Please refer to the map

The language of instruc on of the here men oned courses is English. The credits are European ECTS
credits (1 ECTS equals 30 hours of work, both in– and out of the classroom).
IMPORTANT: The following course list is NOT a contractual document. It is possible that there might s ll
be changes to the courses by or at the beginning of the semester, or the course schedules might overlap.
The final course plan will be made a er the arrival in Germany.
Level of studies
In Germany the level of study is differen ated by semesters. Following is simple summary to which year

The “Master of Science in Vision Science and Business” degree programme offers a broad range of
study modules to choose from in the optometric curriculum. The Master’s Degree Programme can be
taken on a part‐ me basis and allows one to con nue full‐ me prac ce. The programme takes
