PurposeThe Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists is designed to provide a variety of educational topics that will develop the maximum effectiveness of CRNAs in their roles as healthcare providers in diverse settings across the nation.
Goals 1. Provide an organized learning experience
that augments the knowledge and skills of the CRNA in various settings.
2. Serve as a forum where research pertinent to the specialty of nurse anesthesia can be presented.
3. Familiarize nurse anesthetists with the latest medical equipment, technology, and pharmacological products.
4. Provide AANA members with an opportunity to participate in the business of the AANA.
5. Facilitate interaction and networking between participants on a professional and social level.
Needs Assessment and Target AudienceThe AANA Program Committee has reviewed program evaluations and other feedback from the AANA membership to identify the issues that affect nurse anesthesia practice. The topics are determined based on overall member surveys, national trends and issues, and gaps in knowledge to further develop the professional practice of CRNAs. The education activities were developed to meet the needs of CRNAs, student registered nurse anesthetists, and other healthcare providers with an interest in the topics.
Accreditation StatementsThe 2015 Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress has been prior approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for a maximum of 26 (CE) credits; AANA Code Number 1030986; Expiration date 09/01/2015.
The AANA designates the Pharmacology lectures as meeting the criteria for 3 CE credits in Pharmacology/Therapeutics.
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Educational Highlights: Pre-Congress WorkshopsAirway on DemandWilliam Rosenblatt, MD
Friday | August 28
The workshop will provide didactic and hands-on learning opportunities aimed at reinforcing learned knowledge and skills, as well as providing an opportunity for new learning related to airway management under both normal and emergent conditions. The morning session is devoted entirely to lectures presented by Dr. Rosenblatt, an expert in airway management. The workshop will conclude with two hours of hands-on learning using state-of-the-art airway equipment.

The workshop will provide lectures and hands-on practice for advanced physical assessment useful for differential diagnosis in patients suffering from chronic pain. Topics to be covered: pain types, assessment, and interview; strength and reflex testing; and identification of myofascial, SI, facet and axial spine pain. Diane Rowles is a board certified acute care nurse practitioner with expertise in spinal cord trauma. Jackie Rowles is a board-certified adult nurse practitioner specializing in the management of chronic and acute pain.

Come join Drs. Reese and Rieker in this highly acclaimed educational workshop on obstetrics. They will present the most up-to-date information and techniques related to obstetric analgesia and epidural procedures during the morning session. Attendees will have an opportunity to apply what they learned in the morning session during the afternoon hands-on portion, including the use of ultrasound equipment.

This interactive workshop is for members identified as State Peer Advisors (SPA). The sessions will impart knowledge, guidelines, requirements, and tools to ensure volunteer readiness to provide helpful peer support to CRNAs and student registered nurse anesthetists with a substance use disorder (SUD). Hemodynamic optimization through perioper-ative goal-directed therapy (PGDT) may help avoid a number of the most common preventable post-surgical complications. A large body of clinical evidence demonstrates hemodynamic optimization through PGDT in moderate- to high-risk surgery has been shown to reduce post-sur-gical complications, including acute kidney injury (AKI), urinary tract infection (UTI), surgical site infection (SSI), pneumonia, major/minor GI complication, hospital length of stay, and it may improve your patients’ postoperative recovery.
