Mission & Core Values

The mission of the AAP is to attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for all infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. To accomplish this mission, the Academy shall support the professional needs of its members.

The Academy achieves this mission through provision of consistently high levels of value to member pediatricians, pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists, trusted advice to children and families, and professional development opportunities for pediatric leadership. Indeed, as a mission-driven membership-based organization, enhancing child health through its pediatrician and pediatric medical subspecialist and surgical specialist members is at the heart of the Academy’s work. Its strengths include a strong emphasis on policy, advocacy, and education; serving as a public face for children’s health and the profession; and a mission-driven culture. These services are driven by the Academy’s core values and commitments as an organization.

“Once I started residency I felt the need for an advocacy home. Joining the Section on Pediatric Trainees and getting a chance to work on efforts to get out the vote and increase child literacy showed me the power of the advocacy voice of the AAP. As a former triple board resident I have also been very focused on the integration of physical and mental health and through the AAP I was able to create a trainee liaison position to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I also learned the importance of publishing as a tool for advocacy, which has lead me to taking many other editorial positions and continuing to publish.”

Section, Council + Chapter MembershipDo remarkable things for children through involvement with the AAP. Make connections you didn’t know were possible and advance your career through a variety of engagement opportunities.

Sections and CouncilsJoin sections and/or councils based on your member type and established criteria. (Some additional dues may apply.)

Sections are groups within AAP that advance their respective special interests through policy development, education, and advocacy for children. Members within each section guide AAP policies, clinical reports, and practice standards, and act as AAP representatives to other organizations. Each section presents leadership opportunities through an elected executive committee and many appointed sub-committees.

Councils represent the evolution of committees and sections working in the same field into an integrated structure. Similar to sections, they generate policy, create educational programming and resources, develop and promote advocacy initiatives, support translation of policy and education into practice, and integrate and evaluate these efforts to maximize impact.

ChaptersGet involved and enhance your leadership skills by participating in state chapters. Shape the development and implementation of child health policy and advocate at the state and local levels through one of our 59 US chapters. Members in each chapter establish legislative priorities and volunteer their efforts to see them through. Chapters partner with other organizations in each state to advance children’s health and well-being.

CommitteesAAP Members on National Committees develop the majority of policy statements published by the AAP and author books based on their area(s) of expertise. Once members are notified of all committee vacancies, they have the opportunity to nominate Fellows (including themselves) for positions. All committee members are board appointed.

AAP Membership FAQsWhen will I be billed? An explanation of your first bill.Your 12-month membership begins the day your payment is processed. This is called “anniversary billing.” Renewal invoices are mailed four months prior to your membership expiration. If your residency program typically paid your dues during the summer, then your first invoice should arrive in the spring.

How do I pay my dues?First, it is important that the AAP has up-to-date contact information to reach you. Your invoice will be sent to you via US mail and e-mail. Once you receive your invoice, you have three options for paying your dues:

Online: shop.aap.org/account/my-membership Mail: P.O. Box 776413, Chicago, IL 60677-6413 Phone: 866 843 2271

Why are there chapter dues too?Chapters are automatically added to all dues invoices. Membership is strongly encouraged to help you get involved and network at the local level, but is not mandatory. If you do not wish to belong to your chapter, you may remove it online, cross it off the invoice and subtract it from your total, or let the representative know when you call to pay dues.

If my membership lapses, how do I rejoin?Check your account at shop.aap.org/account/my-membership, you may have an invoice waiting to be paid. You may rejoin at any time by calling 866 843 2271. Your membership is immediately activated when your payment is processed.

“I am a member of the AAP because it is the largest group of pediatricians in the country with the sole purpose of advocating for children. I see no greater importance. It is important to stay a member after residency because by staying involved then you are doing a better job at advocating for your patients.”
