How to get around in Aarhus

As you will soon find out, Danes are very fond of bicycles. Even during winter, you will see that most Danish students use bicycles as a mean of transportation. The local bus network is quite developed as well, and the yellow buses from “Midttrafik” will take you all over the city. If you need to get somewhere fast and easy, you can always call one of the city taxis although they are quite expensive.

Public transportation in Aarhus To plan your journey around Aarhus you can use the journey planner at: http://journeyplanner.dk/ or download the app “Rejseplanen”.

Bicycles If you feel like biking instead of taking the bus, it is possible to rent a bike. You can rent it at:

Bikes4rent – http://bikes4rent.dk/

The price for students is DKK 300 for a week (cashonly). Please note that you have to bring your student ID and pay a deposit as well.

Buses The city bus network of Aarhus is well de- veloped. The yellow city buses can take you

all over the city - from 05.00 to 24.00. There are also night buses on Fridays and Satur- days, please note the extra cost (DKK 40). The buses depart every 10-20 minutes during the day and every 1/2 hour during the evening until midnight. Bus schedules and schedules for the newly opened tram are available at http://midttrafik.dk/.

Studying in Denmark

When coming to Aarhus to study, you may find that the teaching style, study methods and course evaluations differ somewhat from what you have been used to at your home university.

Study methods at Aarhus BSS and in Denmark The Danish higher education is characteri- zed by an analytical approach. Students are not only expected to accumulate and reproduce knowledge but also to compare, analyze and evaluate on an individual basis.

Grading Grades will be available on Self Service 5-6 weeks after the exam. Transcripts will also be sent by email at this time.

The Danish grading scale The Danish grading scale has seven grades of which five are passing grades and two are failing grades as seen below. The Danish grades correspond to the ECTS grading sy- stem, which was developed by the European Commission in order to provide common pro- cedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad.

Meet the Danes

Once in Denmark, you will undoubtedly form your own opinion about the Danes, and soyou should. It is, after all, one of the reasons why you are here. We do not intend to supply you with a whole set of views in advance but only give you a few hints that may make your stay a bit easier from the beginning. It may seem difficult to get into contact with the Danes. This may be so as Danes are generally afraid of bothering other people and do not want to impose themselves on strangers. However, do not hesitate to talk to them. Most Danes will be happy to help you and to practice their English.

Denmark’s northern location means that sum- mer days are long and lovely and winter days are short and dark. In winter, Danes spend most of their time indoors, making the darker season cosy with candles, movies, dinners, etc., It is advisable to bring some warm clo- thes and waterproofs as it is in the middle of winter in Denmark at the time you are here. This means that there can be anything from deep snow, bright sun, and very low tempera- tures (-15 degrees Celsius) to dark, rainy and stormy weather and around 0-10 degrees.

The Danish language is difficult to learn. It has strange vowels, but you will find that many words resemble English and German. But don’t worry: 95% of the population speak and understand English!
