Aarhus was founded by the Vikings some 1300 years ago and has been an important trading city ever since.However, it was not until the 1900’s that Aarhus reallystarted growing and soon became Denmark’s secondlargest city after the capital of Copenhagen.

Dubbed the cultural capital of Denmark, Aarhus has been on the forefront of dening Danish art and culture foryears, which is also shown in the city’s architecture and inthe up-and-coming designer shops across Aarhus.

The relatively large inux of young people and students from across the Nordic countries create a natural base forcultural activities, and there are countless cafés as well asclubs, cinemas, museums, amusement parks and variousother venues of entertainment.

Each year, the town hosts several festivals and concerts including Aarhus International Jazz Festival in July andAarhus Festuge in September—the biggest themedfestival in Scandinavia.

Beaches

The three most popular beaches in Aarhus are Bellevue, Den Permanente and Moesgård Strand which are all verypopular on hot summer days, but also fantastic for a nicewalk with fresh air and beautiful sights. You can catch thebus to all three beaches.

Moesgård Prehistoric Museum

Viking Museum

The Women’s Museum

This is one of Denmark’s most original museums. The Women’s Museum shows exhibitions on the aspects of thelife of Danish women’s past and present.

Aarhus Rådhus

Aarhus Rådhus is a functional city hall made by some of Denmark’s most famous architects and have incitedadmiration and antipathy since the day it was completedin 1941. You can wander around for free, but a guidedtour, available in the summer months, is highlyrecommended.

There are many bars in Aarhus and the vibrant student lifein the city is keeps the nightlife perky, even on weeknights. Many night cafés and bars can be found by thepicturesque river downtown, or in the narrower streets inthe centre. Many clubs oers live music on most nights ofthe week. Clubs sometimes charge a fee depending on livemusic.

Aarhus is a perfect location for a shopping spree with plenty of shops and centres to choose from and all withinwalking distance. At the same time, thetranquillity of the ‘Aarhusianians’ also make shopping inthe city a stress free experience.

Shopping Malls

Clemensborg Shopping Centre is by the river cafés downtown and oers shopping in various boutiques in lightand modern surroundings. You can recognise the buildingby the glass façade.

Aarhus Airport

Aarhus Airport is located 45 kilometres north of Aarhus, and a regular bus service takes passengers from the

Aarhus city centre is compact and easy to cover by foot.
