From the Mentors DeskBy: - Dr. Sapna Parashar
Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. The
members of the Rotaract club have been trying hard to achieve new
horizon in the area of social cause and individual development.
I am pleased that the members of Rotaract Club have been
performing various activities related to social cause and individual development on a regular
basis. Every day we need to achieve greater heights by working hard to achieve the goal. With
every activity, they instill the spirit of performing a social cause into each & every individual of
the society. I am extremely pleased with the way things have progressed in recent past.
Rotaract Club of IMNU has also been founded on three things- mutual respect,
recognition of responsibility to help each other on the basis of each others equal worth and
working together to make this society, a better place for everyone to live in.
The responsibility is collective as well as individual. It has been performed well by the
team till now. I hope the new members will keep up to the levels and will take Rotaract Club to
further new heights.
With this I would like to congratulate you and wish you all best of luck for a beautiful
journey with the club ahead.

Faculty CornerWeb 2.0 and Online Activism
By: - Dr. Nityesh Bhatt, Associate ProfessorInformation Management Area, IMNU
The term Web 2.0, coined by Tim O'Reilly isassociated with web applications that facilitate participatory
information sharing, user centered design and collaboration
on the World Wide Web (WWW). These sites allow users
to interact and collaborate with each other on social media
platform as creators of contents rather than the websites
where as users their role is limited to the passive viewing of contents. Examples of Web 2.0
include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites etc.
The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) has been widely
discussed for businesses, education, government and other sectors. In recent years, ICT in
general and Web 2.0 in particular have been significantly credited as contributor to the
mobilization of worldwide protests for political and socio-economic transformation. In
response, many embarrassed and bewildered governments made intricate efforts to control
such online media. In this regard, a blog associated with Wired
(http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/01/tunisia/) lucidly describes the efforts undertaken by
Tunisian authorities. On 11 March 2011, Reporters without Borders gave its annual award for
online media freedom to the Tunisian blogging group Nawaat.org. Founded in 2004, it played
an important role rallying anti-government protesters by reporting on the protests which the
national media ignored.
Social media played a major role in toppling of government in Egypt too. Here the
historic moment was the emergence of The April 6 Youth Movement, first Egyptian
8/3/2019 Aarohan Vol 4
7/20
Facebook group started in Spring 2008 to support the workers in El-Mahalla El-Kubra, who
were planning to strike on April 6. By January 2009, it had 70,000 predominantly young and
educated members with core concerns of free speech, nepotism in government and the
country's stagnant economy. Subsequently, another Facebook page We Are All Khaled Saeed
was contributed by Google executive Wael Ghonim, sparked the revolution in country. It
attracted over 400,000 followers soon and played a prominent role in spreading and bringing
attention to the growing discontent. The page called for protests on 25th January, known as the
day of wrath. Hundreds of thousands of protestors flooded the streets to show their discontent
with the murder and the corruption within their country. Ghonim was also jailed for 12 days.
He has gained quite a large following through his Twitter account where he had created a
narrative of the events happening day to day in Egypt. The TIME magazine added him in its
"Time 100" list of 100 most influential people of 2011.
Protesters like Ghonim leveraged Facebook to schedule the protests, Twitter to
coordinate, and YouTube to tell the world. Sharif Abdel Kouddous, a journalist with
Democracy Now! had provided live coverage and tweets from Tahrir Square during the
protests and has also been credited with using new media to raise awareness regarding the
protests.
This online activism was effectively seen in India too in last eight months. India Against
Corruption (IAC), a movement of Anna Hazare team which demands comprehensive reforms
of anti-corruption systems in India, specially through their version of Jan Lokpal Bill, have also
adopted ICT to unprecedented level. Massive support garnered by team from various section
of society was historic but without Facebook, SMSes, IVRS, Call Centre, Twitter; this
movement which galvanised whole India and specially youths and middle class against
corruption, may not have been revolutionary as witnessed by whole world. From the common
man to sports and Bollywood celebrities, all extended support to Anna through social
networking sites, which further created more buzz around the whole movement.
IACs urge to give miss call on the number 022-61550789 to support Annas drive
generated 2.5 crore missed call by latest count. By the time Anna was arrested by the Delhi
Police, over 500 pages had been dedicated to Anna and his anti-corruption campaign, Google
saw 122,000,000 search results (0.31 seconds) from people to know who Anna Hazare is and
within hours, 180,000 users signed an online petition to free him. Annas interview, recorded
inside Tihar Jail has been visited by more than 100,000 people on YouTube India against

Corruption. Facebook fans saw 500,000 people joining in; the page has more than 400,000
likes on its page. Later, there was a flood of pages devoted to Anna and his movement and
numerous tweets were also floated in his name. After a lot of misunderstanding and malicious
gossip about him, Anna himself resorted to blogging and tweeting and also launched a
Facebook profile in a bid to connect with his supporters.
A random Google search on Anna Hazare by a media group returned 13,800,000 results
(in 0.09 seconds), more than Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi - 11,700,000 results (0.08
seconds), Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi - 1,170,000 results (0.08 seconds), or
Congress president Sonia Gandhi - 1,160,000 results (0.08 seconds). BJP president Nitin
Gadkari returned a poor 793,000 results (0.06 seconds). Similarly, a recent report released by
Google on Dec 16 2011 reveals that Anna Hazare was the second 'Top Searched Person' on
cyberspace in 2011 after Bollywood Actress Katrina Kaif. Anna Hazare also topped the list in
the category of 'Fastest Rising People'.
Teams latest initiative to start Jail Bharo Andolan from December 30, 2011 to January
1, 2012 across India (which was deferred later), received approximately two lakhs registration
upto 28 Dec 2011. Adoption of technology by Team Anna was appreciated even by Govt. of
India. According to Union Law Minister (Govt. of India) Mr. Salman Khurshid, Annas
movement was a remarkable combination of traditional politics and unconventional modern
practices. We were at a disadvantage because we did not use the social media as effectively as
Annas movement did.
Buoyed by the success of Web 2.0 as an emerging media, world will surely witness more
rigorous use of ICT for social activism. Whether this strengthens the democracy is under
debate but people have surely received a platform to raise their concern. It can be an excellent
opportunity for Governments too, including India to take it constructively for involving and
engaging citizens.

Shouldering the Burden - Child LabourBy: - Rtr. Anu Shukla
Chandigarh, Jul 1, 2011: The Punjab government on Thursday said
that over 667 child labourers were rescued last week by labour
department during raids at several centres across the state. The raids
were conducted at 6,166 centres between June 12 and June 18 during
the Child Labour Eradication Week observed in the state, state labour
minister Arunesh Shakir said.
The RTE lays down that all children under the age of 14 should be enrolled in school.
Yet the Child Labour Act does not expressly prohibit the employment of children in
agriculture, and an estimated 5.6 million children, or two thirds of all children employed, are
working in the fields. The above news item and the view of the site India Together stir
something in us. Even though the laws are created, they are not followed. The efforts are made
at all levels at the government of India level, by the UNICEF, by the ILO, by the media and by
the World Bank as well.
There are reports and there are laws and there are conferences. Still we lag behind; the above
data makes it clear. Why cant we stop it? Why, then Right to Education becomes a reality
rather than a dream?? Why, do we find 667 child labourers even today????
It is all because we lack spirit. Remember something?? Yes, at that same small shop in that
village you stopped and asked Chotu 2 cup chaii milegi? Instead of askinghim to do work,
we should have +aid Chotu tum yahan kaam kyu karte ho? But we would not have spared
8/3/2019 Aarohan Vol 4
10/20
even a minute wasting the time on why is this child working here?
What is his motive behind this? Doesnt he have parents? Does he
know about his rights? We have worked on the improvement of children by opening
schools and bringing a meal system in them. But this is not enough
as we all have seen that there was a scam involved. NGOs alone cannot solve the problems.
Donate some small amount for them every year, work for them in TEACH FOR INDIA
campaign, try and understand their main hurdles. It is very easy to create laws but too difficult
to implement them.
You can donate online, read about them in the links mentioned below. The next time you
celebrate luxuriously, think about them and donate some amount for them.

Rotaract Mentorship ProgramBy Rtr. Surbhi
The first year MBA (FT) and (FB) students also got involved in
the mentorship program of Rotaract Club of IMNU (Institute of
Management, Nirma University).
This program known as NIRMAN gives a dedicated guide
cum friend to poor students. The mentor and mentee meet at the
Community Center of Manav Sadhna, an NGO working for the
upliftment of the poor children. It is functioning from Sabarmati
Ashram, Ahmedabad. Rotaract Club is associated with Manav
Sadhana through mentorship program NIRMAN. The purpose of
NIRMAN is to help these children, who belong to poor families, develop their career and
help them in the education by discussing the real-time issues being
faced by the children. The members play the role of mentors to
guide the poor children for education and career. While interacting
with Mr. Shirish, Chief Coordinator of NGO, the members came to
know about the extra co-curricular activities the students were
involved in. The Community Centre has a clinic, playground,
computer centre and the entire basic infrastructure needed for the development of these
children.
The children, after their school, come to the center in the
afternoon for these extra-curricular activities and stay there till
6p.m.. The members and the first year students interacted with the
children, played games and also helped them with their studies.
Both the children and the members of the team were enthusiastic.
RCIMNU will have the formal mentorship allotted to the first year
students in the next visit to Manav Sadhna.
These programs provide a ray of hope in the life of these children who are ignorant and
are unable to share the intricacies of their life to the world.

Sanidhya in a SARAL wayBy: - Srijani Dutta
Blessed are those who give without remembering. And blessed are
those who take without forgetting. - Bernard MeltzerThis can be said of the 100 odd kids along with their mentors who
participated in the cultural event Sanidhya organised by the social cell
Saral of Institute of Management, Nirma University (IMNU) during its 2-day cultural Fest
Richter 10. This event took place on 3rd December, 2011 and included the social cell of
IIMA named Prayaas and that of MICA named Jagriti. All these people came together on
this day to make it a day of giving, sharing, dancing, singing, fun & frolic, and becoming
children again.
Prayaas can be said to be a result of project done by Geeta, a PGP-I student and her
study group as part of the curriculum requirements for the course, ISPE(Indian Social and
Political Environment) in the year 2003. Gradually, this project turned into the prayaas
(endeavour) of the students of IIMA to give a future to the kids, bring smile to their faces, make them learn studies as well as important things in life like values, ethics, as well as have fun
in life. Jagriti being the social service wing at MICA aims at a wider horizon l ike addressing
various social and environmental issues by involving the entire MICA community. Taking care
and providing education of the underprivileged children is an integral part of this wing. As for
Saral, being the social cell of IMNU was also started by its students 2 years back, by involving
the kids of the construction workers and maid servants living in and around the campus in day-
to-day learning activities as well as fun activities. Today Saral sponsors the school going students
totally including their fees, books, clothes and keeps on trying to grow these talented little
humans into independent men and women. All these 3 social communities came together and
participated in Sanidhya.
The event started off with the Talent Show with an informal introduction with the kids in
the auditorium where each kid introduced himself. This was followed by dance, song, recital
performances by kids from all the 3 cells. They even taught dance to the volunteers, turning the
event into a learning experience for both the younger and elder people. The highlight of theshow was when 50 kids from Prayaas performed together on popular numbers like Dabangg.
8/3/2019 Aarohan Vol 4

After this, the kids had a fun-filled snacks time followed by a craft workshop conducted
by the students of the 3 institutions themselves. It was basically a time of sharing whatever ideas
and creativity the students had, which not enriched the environment, but also formed a
bonding among the volunteers of the 3 institutions. Finally, there was Sports and Fun Time
which included small token prizes as well as consolation prizes and the kids had the time of
their life. This brought the end of the 3 hour event, which would always bring smile to the faces
of all the people who were present for days to come.
