HOUSTON
of cultureMUSEUM
The Houston Museum of Culture is a dynamic building that sits within the heart of the East End in Houston, Texas. It is adjacent to many important landmarks within the community, including Our Lady Guadalupe Church, East End Esplanade, and the Bayou. The architecture and landscape react to each driver in a dynamic and unique way. The entrance of the building is raised and opens up towards the church creating a courtyard, while the split through the lobby runs perpendicular to the bayou. The second story program of the TTU Studio points out over the landscape towards the Esplanade. By designing around these drivers, it allows for a dynamic and interesting form of the building, as well as circulaton throughout the space.

HOUSTON INTERNATIONALATIONALAT
PROMENADEThe Houston International Promenade is the rst of many projects to an extensive revitaliza-tion process of East Downtown Houston. It is an attempt to bring a sense of landscape and topography into a distinct urban environ-ment. The promenade will be a unique urban condition in which many systems can interact. The design of the promenade reacts to three distinct drivers: BBVA Compass Stadium + Residential In uence + Commercial/ Market In uence. By integrating programs that meet the need of each driver, while being dynamic for any user, the promenade space will be its own unique sense of place. By designing around these drivers, it allows for the prom-enade to adapt, and grow as future develop-ment occurs adjacent to the site.

ADVERTISEMENTagencyISEMENTagencyThe SLIP Studio Advertising agency sits at the corner of I-35 and 6th street in Austin, Texas. This underpass acts as a gateway between east and west downtown. The agency acts as an extension of west 6th street east of the highway. It also acts as a beacon; a grand entrance into the up and coming east side. The agency program is merged with a rock climbing wall, allowing the interior of the space to be dynamic with many people and systems merging into one. The structure is a steel paneled facade, with a concrete shell inside, acting as a separation and the climbing wall. The form of the building is carved from mani-festations of pedestrian/ vehicular circulation, carved away from a cube giving the building a dynamic facade.

PIAZZAThe event that guided the project was based around the condition of pocketing. The pockets on the site are the result of sublayers, intersecting in uences, and buildings that are located near the site. The site itself is a large pocket used to wrap around the surrounding urban environment. From studying the use of pockets and how they are formed, the site was then created using layers of pocketing. The rst pocket is the site itself, and how it forms around the church and buildings located near the site. The next pockets were created using in uences from the surrounding site, such as the bridge, theatre, church, and buildings nearby. Hardscape and softscape areas were created as a result from using the in uences. Within these smaller pockets another sub layer of pockets are located to help direct gathering areas and events. The form of the pocket came from a reference back to the church and the shape it creates on the northeast side. The pattern was then used to identify the pockets so that people could have a designated space to gather so they can create or participate in an event. The pockets are made of many different materials. Through the use of gure- gure an offset condition to was derived to help create a sectional pocket by either excavating material or using the same material to build up a surface.

The Dallas Performance Gallery sits within the cultural district in downtown Dallas. The Dallas Performance Gallery acts as a DART station, gallery, and performance space. By thorough examination of the site, as well as its in uences, massing and program developed. Throughout the design process, decisions were made to accommodate not only those of the DART system, but pedestrians and vehicular commuters as well. The building allows for a gallery space, within available space for performance, and movies. This is possible by the roof space, which is able to be occupied. The structural system is a concrete shell, with a light glass wall underneath. Atop the side of the shell is a light steel mega box truss, allowing for the program to be embedded within the truss itself. The truss is off set slightly and cantilevered over the edge of the oor space.
