ProclamationHawai‘i’s keiki are the future leaders of our families, communities and the world. Today, schools are

tasked with preparing each generation for the responsibilities and issues they will face throughout life. As institutions, schools face their own challenges in finding the resources necessary to reach their full potential as launching pads for productive citizens of the 21st century.

The Hawai‘i Jaycees, a young person’s leadership training organization, believes in its motto, “Leadership development through community involvement.” Since 1932, chapters of the Jaycees in Hawai‘i have engaged in significant projects in our islands including the Aloha Festivals, 50th State Fair, Blood Bank of Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i County Fair and the Cherry Blossom Festival.

In 2008, the Hawai‘i Jaycees launched the first statewide Adopt-A-School Day project to rally community support for local schools with a three-step call to “Pick a school, ask how you can help and lend a hand.” Now in its third year, the Adopt-A-School Day project aims to encourage 100 organizations to run 100 service projects benefitting 100 Hawai‘i schools in the four major counties.

Understanding the importance of Adopt-A-School-Day, local businesses, community organizations, church groups, sports teams and individuals have stepped forward to do what they can to help improve our schools. The time, energy and resources of two-year sponsor HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union along with sponsors PB Americas Inc., StorQuest Hawai‘i, ING Direct and ING Insurance and Annuities, is a reflection of their aloha spirit. In addition to benefiting our present day institutions, Adopt-A-School Day will positively impact Hawai‘i’s future.

THEREFORE, I, LINDA LINGLE, Governor of the State of Hawai‘i, and I, JAMES R. “DUKE” AIONA, JR., Lieutenant Governor, do hereby proclaim October 10, 2010, as

HAWAI‘I ADOPT-A-SCHOOL DAY and encourage our residents to support our keiki and our future by engaging and supporting local schools and their programs.

DONE at the State Capitol, in the Executive Chambers, Honolulu, State of Hawai‘i, this nineteenth day of August 2010.

Chairman’s MessageCo-Chairperson Message Chairman’s Message

Just One Day! That’s all it takes for us to make an impact in our community. If all of us gave just one day to a school in Hawaii, we would all be able to enhance the learning environment for our children… Give them something to look forward to and belief that they too have the ability to work towards a brighter tomorrow. Through the Hawaii Jaycees Adopt-A-School Day, we as a community are taking a stand to show that we believe and value our children and their future.

Looking at how much our Adopt-A-School Day campaign has accomplished, it excites me to see how many people and organizations who share our vision and desire to reach out to Hawaii’s schools, especially during a time when they need it the most. Adopt-A-School Day has grown tremendously over the past 3 years, bringing assistance to over 100 schools! With everyone’s help, it will continue to grow in the years to come and reach out to all the schools in Hawaii!

If has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the general chair-woman of this year’s Adopt-A-School Day. In these past couple of months, I have had the opportunity to meet and work with many great organizations in Hawaii that share my passion for service to the community and for our schools. In only 2 years of membership in the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, it is through my Jaycee experience and great projects like this that I have been able to develop myself into a stronger person with the confidence and determination to make a difference in Hawaii. I applaud and appreciate all those like you who dedicate their personal lives to help others and to make our Hawaii a better place to live.

Mahalo,

Krystal Lee 2010 Adopt-A-School Day Co-Chairperson Honolulu Chinese Jaycees VP of Community Development

Aloha!

On behalf of General Chairperson Krystal Lee and the organizing committee for the 3nd Annual Jaycees Adopt-A-School Day, I welcome you to our Kick-Off Rally. We greet you in humble apprecia-tion for joining us on the path to creating a better Hawaii by supporting education across the islands.

With schools strapped for resources, states com-peting for funds, and even a Constitutional Amend-ment on the ballot, there is much discussion and debate this year over how to improve education.

Perhaps Dr. Suess put it best when he wrote, “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” Adopt-A-School Day proposes a three-step process to help Hawaii schools:

1) Pick a school 2) Ask how you can help 3) Lend a hand

Let’s do what we can at least once a year to help schools, teachers, and students. Sometimes it is that simple.

Today we honor and recognize those in our community who have made a commitment to take those steps and help improve our educational environment, one school, one project at a time. The impact of your service will go far beyond the project, activity, or donation you put forth in October. We are creating a movement toward establishing Adopt-A-School Day as a day of awareness and service to our schools. The effort has grown significantly each year and with your continued involvement, Adopt-A- School Day will continue to do so for years to come for the benefit of all of our keiki.

Together, we can and will make a difference by investing “One day…for our future.”

Mahalo,

Patrick Tomiyasu 2010 Adopt-A-School Day Co-Chairperson

JUSTIN CRUz Island life is a way of life for weather anchor Justin Cruz. He grew up in the western Pacific island of Guam, where storms small and large, includ-ing super-cyclones, hit regularly. At seven, Justin began to work for the family business — a company his father founded and grew to be the largest pest control and chemical distributorship in Micronesia. In 2006, Justin was approached by KHON2 News to anchor weather reports on the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts. His knowledge of and firsthand experience with wild weather in Guam, combined with forecast informa-tion provided by The National Weather Service in Honolulu, shaped his reports. Justin’s forecasts cover all Hawaiian islands with a primary focus to alert viewers of potentially dangerous weather events and how best to prepare. His delivery is conversational and free of sensationalism.

August 28, 2010 Dear Attendees, As the 67th President of the Hawaii Jaycees, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Kick-Off rally for the 3rd Annual Hawaii Jaycees Adopt-A-School Day at Ala Moana Center. This is a landmark event, as we will kick off the third year of this very successful community outreach program. Adopt-A-School Day Hawaii, as a project, has come to symbolize community pride and dedication in our schools. Envisioned by 65th Hawaii Jaycees State President Patrick Tomiyasu in 2008, the project has served as a vehicle to get needed assistance to our resource-deprived school system in Hawaii. In a much deeper sense, though, this project also truly embodies and champions the principles of the Jaycee movement. 90 years ago Mr. Henry Gissenbier, founder of the Jaycee movement, saw a need to help advance the skills of young people today in order for them to become the community leaders required for tomorrow. He did this by creating an organization which, literally, put youth to action. Answering our founder’s call-to-action, young leaders from all 12 chapters which make up the Hawaii Jaycees have come together once again to identify schools and their needs, obtain the necessary resources to help our schools and plan necessary projects to help our schools on October 10, 2010. The members of the Hawaii Jaycees salute the efforts of the organizers of the Adopt-A-School program for 2010, led by its Chairperson Krystal Lee of the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees. We also thank all the sponsors, partners and supporters who have provided resources the Hawaii Jaycees to make this project a success. Mahalo!

We represent a variety of occupations, interests, and social and eco-nomic backgrounds. Each chapter within the Hawaii Jaycees has its own unique focus area, which are represented through their signa-ture projects which include the Dragon Boat Race, Annual Filipino Fiesta, Manoa Craft Fair, Hawaii County Fair, Special Olympics, and the Cherry Blossom Festival to name a few. We, the Hawaii Jaycees, as a civic leadership orga-nization feel the need to support our keiki through a community effort – the Adopt-A-School Day project. Adopt-A-School Day is a statewide grass-roots effort to establish an annual day of awareness and service to our Hawaii schools, similar to Make A Difference Day. Last year, we involved 33 groups to assist 40 schools in fulfilling their necessities, including beautifying their campus, implementing new school programs, offering career skills train-ing, providing donations, and more. And we could not have done so without the support of our gener-ous sponsors.

This year we want to invite your group to help us raise an even greater awareness in the community to create a bigger impact on our local schools. Our goal is to involve 100 community groups to serve the needs of 100 schools – public, private, and charter schools alike. Your generous con-tribution, no matter the size, will go a long way. Participants (School Adopters) are made up of local community groups (Jaycees, Lions, Rotary), sports teams, church groups, concerned citizens and local businesses that have stepped forward to give back.

The Third Annual Jaycees Adopt-A-School Day will take place on Sunday, October 10, 2010. The Jaycee chapters will continue to support schools in their areas, and most importantly, will be serving as a catalyst to expand the scope and outreach of the Adopt-A-School Day statewide on all islands. We will handle the promotion and publicity of this truly

unique effort to establish an annual day of service where we invest one day for our future. Your support will make this happen. On behalf of our keiki, thank you in advance for making this such a success!
