D E A R F R I E N D S A N D F E L LO W S O U T H D A KOTA L I O N S,

As the first half of my second term as the President of the Board of the South

Dakota Lions Eye & Tissue Bank comes to a close, I continue to be grateful for the

opportunity I have had to work with this amazing program and the individuals who

give so selflessly to restore the gifts of sight and health.

Over the past year I have embarked on a remarkable journey of learning more about

the mission and work of the South Dakota Lions Eye & Tissue Bank. SDLETB has

evolved to be a leading organization in championing quality, expanding services

and recognizing the very precious nature of the gift that is given. I have felt very

privileged to interact with both donor families, and recipients who shared their

stories of finding hope through the gift of donation.

Each year hundreds of South Dakotans are faced with making a decision to donate.

This brave decision restores not only sight and health but also hope. As a designated

donor, I know that I am hope to someone in need. As Lions, I would encourage all of

you to listen to these amazing individuals share their stories and experiences about

the gift of hope we can all share- the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation.

I want to thank the staff and the Board of Directors of our South Dakota Lions Eye

& Tissue Bank for this experience and look forward to spreading this message of

hope through 2014. Thank you to all of the Lions of South Dakota for your present

and future support.

Together we are Hope.

I’m amazed by how quickly the year has gone.

Looking back on 2013, it will be remembered

as a year of significant and positive change.

The organization has weathered a change in

leadership alongside a restructuring that began

in late July. I am incredibly proud of the team of

professionals at SDLETB who work every day to

keep the mission of restoring the gifts of sight

and health front and center.

The changes in the organization included a

stronger focus and partnership between quality,

regulatory compliance, clinical performance, and

community education. SDLETB’s commitment

to these improvements were reflected in the

organization receiving the best outcomes

in EBAA and AATB reaccreditation in 2013.

We have also been able to renew numerous

relationships with hospitals, partner eye banks,

Lions Clubs, and donation partners.

In 2013, legislation was passed that

strengthened the Uniform Anatomical Gift

Act. This legislation allows South Dakotans to

manage their donation wishes online at www.

donatelifesd.org. To further support donation,

SDLETB created a community outreach position.

Our goal is to increase the number of registered

South Dakotans and encourage people to talk to

their families about their wishes.

What hasn’t changed is our commitment to our

mission. In 2013, SDLETB provided the gift of

sight to 643 patients throughout the world,

with 201 corneal transplants taking place right

here in South Dakota. Through tissue donation,

thousands of lives were touched and forever

changed with restorative grafts to maintain

mobility, provide reconstruction, or aid bypasses

and other life enhancing procedures. Without

our dedicated staff and supportive community,

none of this would be possible.

Looking forward, 2014 is already beginning to

take shape. To celebrate “Donate Life Month”

in April, SDLETB will hold the ribbon cutting

ceremony of the long awaited Donor Memorial

Park. The park is a place where donors can be

remembered and their families may find peace.

We have already received many memorials over

the years, and they will be honored within the

park. A special section of the park has also been

dedicated to honor Henry and Eleanor Carlson

for their tremendous support over the years as

Lions, members of the original founders club,

and significant financial contributors.

With the help of our physician partners, SDLETB

will expand our surgical services in 2014 to

offer DMEK—a specialized corneal graft that

may improve surgical outcomes and reduce

patients’ healing time. Currently, only a handful

of programs are offering this specialized

procedure.

Additionally, we have implemented a new

electronic medical records system. This system

will streamline our donor records, provide

better traceability, and increase our regulatory

compliance. It will also allow us to communicate

more efficiently with surgeons.

SDLETB continues to strive to deliver the best

practices and cutting edge techniques in order

to meet the ever changing demands for eye and

tissue in our region. We also remain forever

grateful for our donors and their families, and

hope that we can properly honor their gifts of

sight and health. The future is bright.

I am pleased to report the achievements of Quality Systems for 2013. During the past year, we were audited by five external organizations that included the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), and the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB). Additionally, we were audited by two tissue processors and a few other external partners for regulatory compliance.

We successfully passed all audits and that success has been reflected by our good standing with the FDA. We have also earned the fullest accreditations (three-years) from both the EBAA and AATB. The tissue processors and external partners have found our quality program to be satisfactory and we are operating successfully with those organizations.

The full accreditations from EBAA and AATB reflect the ongoing commitment to Quality that is exemplified on a daily basis by our staff, management, and Board of Directors. Keeping Quality first in all aspects of day to day operations ensures that tissue is recovered, processed, packaged, and distributed in a safe manner; all while providing the best possible tissues and service to our surgeons.

In addition to Quality, we pride ourselves in providing continuing education opportunities to our employees. This allows our employees to remain knowledgeable and enhance their talents into valuable skills while allowing SDLETB to remain on the cutting edge of eye and tissue banking. We were able to send several employees to national industry meetings including the AATB and EBAA Annual Meetings, the AATB Quality and Donor Suitability Workshop, and the EBAA Fall Educational Symposium. Our clinical and quality staff attended a 13-week Certified Tissue Banking Specialist (CTBS) training class with the goal

of our staff taking the certification exam in the fall of 2014. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that Cody Belitz (Western SD Clinical Manager) received his Certified Eye Banking Technician (CEBT) certification from the EBAA in 2013, making a total of three CEBTs employed at SDLETB. Along with the national meetings and educational opportunities, we offered monthly training for our staff through online seminars, staff meetings, and professional development training. Many of these professional development sessions were presented by Margaret Sumption of Sumption & Wyland and Dan Oakland of Alternative HRD in Sioux Falls.

As well as maintaining compliance with external regulators, we also provide periodic safety training for our staff in order to ensure that our employees are kept safe and healthy during their workday. This year, we were able to provide safety training on topics ranging from hazardous materials and blood borne pathogens to proper use of fire extinguishers. Training our employees on the most up to date & proper procedures for clinical safety delivers a valuable skill to our employees as well as empowering our staff with the tools needed to complete their work safely & efficiently.

Since joining SDLETB in February 2013, I continue to have the privilege of working with a dedicated team who are committed to Quality in all aspects of their work. I am convinced that our team is devoted and we will continue to meet and exceed our Quality goals in 2014.

The South Dakota Lions Eye and Tissue Bank has

assembled an accomplished team of more than 40

full and part-time staff dedicated to carrying out its

mission. Our staff consists of experienced professionals

who bring years of experience to making miracles

happen each day through their dedication to donors,

donor families, recipients, and the communities we

serve. As an organization with a mission of providing

sight and health, each person lives that mission each

day in the work they perform.

The people of South Dakota have historically supported organ, eye, and tissue donation. This support is demonstrated by 55% of the State’s

population being registered to become a donor upon his or her death. Although this number is above the national average of 43%, there has been

very little increase in recent years despite the increasing need for life-saving transplants.

In late March of 2013, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard

signed into law House Bill 1217. This bill was designed to revise

and expand certain provisions related to organ and tissue donation,

namely the establishment of an online donor registry. This online

registry allows individuals in South Dakota to manage their

donation wishes in a more accessible and informed method online

at www.donatelifesd.org.

House Bill 1217 not only establishes the online registry; it also

allows organ, eye, and tissue donation agencies to access the donor

information electronically. This means that individuals will be

able to make their own choices to become a hero to someone in

need without placing the burden of the decision upon their family

members.

Furthermore, House Bill 1217 ensures that South Dakotans will

receive educational information regarding donation through the

Department of Public Safety. Such information will be displayed on

the DPS website, in posters throughout DPS locations, and in the

Driver License Manual.

In addition to the accomplishments by the Legislature and Governor,

the South Dakota Lions Eye & Tissue Bank is taking steps to improve

donation awareness and improving donor registration. A new staff

position, the Community Outreach Coordinator, has been created and

charged with implementing educational programs throughout our

communities. The Community Outreach Coordinator will be visiting

health classes in middle schools and driver education courses to

provide education on donation. Additionally, the Coordinator will

provide outreach and education to DMV personnel, and champion

our mission to Lion’s clubs and other service and healthcare

organizations.

We are excited to see our mission and the precious gift of life grow

throughout South Dakota. Please visit www.donatelifesd.org and

give the gift of hope by becoming an organ, eye, and tissue donor.

The South Dakota Lions Eye & Tissue Bank mission is Giving the

Gifts of Sight and Health. We are committed to helping those with

debilitating illness and injury! We do this by providing high quality

transplantable donor corneas & tissue to surgeons in South Dakota,

nationally and internationally.

We share this belief with others in order to give them the opportunity to participate by becoming registered donors.

Through its Community Outreach Program the SDLETB is sharing our

mission with Lions Clubs, partner hospitals, driver’s education classes

and other groups throughout our service area. People are becoming

aware of the life changing difference that donors are making in the

lives of recipients locally and around the world.

For the 2013 Season of Giving, SDLETB decorated

a tree at Christmas at the Capitol. We celebrated

the theme of the great outdoors with peacocks

bedazzled in donor green and blue. Underneath the

tree, we also displayed framed copies of the Donor

Quilt squares in remembrance of their selfless gifts.

The tree was on display in Pierre from Thanksgiving

until New Years.

The second Donor Memorial Quilt is in the final stages of completion. It

will be displayed with its sister in the SDLETB board room and at various

donation events throughout the year. Additionally, we have nearly enough quilt

squares to begin work on the third Donor Memorial Quilt, and it is expected

to be completed by the end of 2014. Volunteer Cynde Stoakes has generously

stepped up again to help complete these quilts.

With over 2,200 individual Lions spread

across the State of South Dakota, you are

one of the most important messengers

about the gift of donation. If your Club

would like a tour, a speaker, or needs

more information about eye and tissue

donation and how people can register

to be donors, please contact Alan at the

South Dakota Lions Eye & Tissue Bank.

Donor families took center stage in

June. The 2013 Sioux Falls Donor

Tribute Dinner took place in the

Washington Pavilion’s beautiful Mary W.

Sommervold Hall. Grateful recipients,

SDLETB staff and board, and host Brady

Mallory were honored to join donor

families for a night in remembrance of

their loved ones. The evening struck a

careful balance between grief and hope.

In 2014, SDLETB will be hosting Tribute

Luncheons in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.

“Now that I am a recipient of corneal tissue, I better understand what “The Greatest Gift” is really about.”

Dear Donor Family,

I am having a hard time finding the right words to express my sorrow

for your loss and my gratitude for your decision to donate. I wanted

you to know how much the unselfish gift of your loved one has, and

will continue to, improve my quality of life. I know the decision to

donate is not an easy one, and I wish there was a stronger word or

phrase I knew that meant more than “Thank you.”

Back in March, I fell off a trailer and upon landing I tore my ACL in

half. My right leg was basically useless after my injury. Due to having

torn the ligament completely, my knee would no longer hold together.

I feared all the activities I loved would be over and I would need to

seek a new career.

The new ligament I received has given me a new lease on life and

has inspired me to try new activities. I will be able to continue doing

everything I did before my fall. Some of the many things I love to do

are ski, go camping and hiking, play softball, chase my nieces and

nephews, and hopefully chase little ones of my own some day. I will

be able to go back to work and continue my career. I work for a great

company that has allowed me to do many things, my favorite being

driving tractor trailer.

I have a big day coming up in May and because of your family’s

generosity I will be able to walk down the aisle. I will be thinking of

your family’s gift on my wedding day and everyday thereafter.

Thank you,

Heath er

Donor Family Members,

I am writing today because I was the recipient of a wonderful and

amazing gift—the gift of sight in my left eye. The gift was so wonderful

and amazing that I find it difficult to adequately express my feelings

and appreciation. Yet, I know I must try.

For many years, the cornea in my left eye was deteriorating due a

condition known as Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy. This condition made

it progressively more and more difficult to drive, read a newspaper,

recognize people in certain lighting conditions, enjoy a ball game, etc.

On December 18, 2012, Dr. Anne Keating performed a partial corneal

transplant with tissue donated to the South Dakota Eye & Tissue Bank.

I am now able to see clearly in my left eye. This gift has improved the

quality of my life substantially.

In 1999, my students and I produced a documentary for public

television titled “The Greatest Gift.” It was an emotional documentary

about the importance of organ transplants and the impact organ

donations can have to extend the quality of life for others. One of my

students wrote a song titled “Hearts are Strong” as part of the program.

The song included the following line: “Give my sight to someone who

can’t see a baby’s face or the love in another’s eyes. Give my heart to

one whose own gave him pain. Hearts are strong. They go on and on.

Hearts are strong.” When we were doing this television program, I had

no idea that I would one day need a transplant myself. Now that I am

a recipient of corneal tissue, I better understand what “The Greatest

Gift” is really about.

For those of you who are family members of the person who gave

me this gift, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart. When I

think about your loved one who is now a part of me, I think of things

spiritual and meaningful. And I pray that God will bless your family

for this wonderful gift.

Thank you,

Martin
