AAUW Greensboro, our founding and our future

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded in 1881 as a membership organization. AAUW Greensboro began in 1912 as a collaboration among local women under the Southern Association of College Women.

First branch president Mary M. Petty (1863-1958) grew up in a Quaker community known as Bush Hill outside of Greensboro, NC and described our founding in her own words: “The Greensboro chapter of the Southern Association of College Women was organized on March 26, 1912, at the instance of Misses Mary M. Petty and Julia Dameron, of the State Normal College. It reports a membership of 15, representing 11 different institutions.”

Mary Petty received her bachelor’s degree from Wellesley in 1885, and taught briefly at Guilford College (also in Greensboro) before coming to the State Normal and Industrial School in 1893. She led the department of chemistry there from 1893 to 1934. In addition to her classroom teaching, she helped lead the campus’s Science Club, an organization for faculty members and advanced students to explore areas not included in the formal coursework. Two years after her death, Mary M Petty was honored with the naming of the Petty Building which housed the sciences and now is home to mathematics, statistics, physics, astronomy, and computer science.

Our branch is one of approximately twenty local branches in North Carolina and is one of the few which is organized as a separate 501c3 nonprofit, allowing for tax deductible donations and the sustained growth of our community outreach programs.

With over 90 members and several college/university partner affiliates, the organization meets September, November, January, and March and holds special events of interest to members and of service to our mission to advance economic and educational equity for women and girls in Greensboro.

2019-2020 AAUW Greensboro Letter to Parents and Girls

The Greensboro Branch of the American Association of

University women is on a mission to empower women and girls.

Our members are engaged in programs that support the needs of

today’s women and the future of the younger generation. The

organization partners with other organizations that focus on

building the respect and fairness of the females and their value in

today’s society. The variety of professional presenters from

lectures to the hands-on non-traditional excursions allows the

flexibility in exposure that is difficult to find in other locations. We

partner with local agencies, organizations, and businesses to

provide unique yet powerful opportunities to young girls such as:

Triad Tech Savvy, IT Is for Girls, Scholarships for College and

University students, training in non-traditional careers through

local technical college, and Gender Pay Equity workshops to

enhance professional growth among women.

We continuously seek new and dedicated members who

are excited about the opportunity to support other women. We

look forward to your ideas and suggestions.

We learn to serve and we serve to learn!

Codeista is a program exposing girls to computer science by teaching them basic coding through various programming interfaces. Through lessons, discussions, and creating personal projects, we hope not only to encourage girls to consider a STEM career, but also to develop the growth mindset to succeed in the future. Provided by Suhani and AAUW [email protected] Registration is closed for this program. Please contact the Program Leader, Suhani Ramchandra, [email protected] , for information about the waitlist.

SPONSOR RECOGNITION: AAUW Greensboro Member, Marlene Pratto

Marlene Massaro Pratto was born in Pueblo, Colorado. She entered

the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1956. She worked at the

Bureau of Standards, part of the Department of Commerce, while a

student and for nine years after. She says she owes her professional

life to Sputnik. After the Russians launched Sputnik the federal

government instituted programs wherein STEM (not called STEM

then) students could take a civil service exam and apply to work in

government labs and research facilities in the summers and part time

during the school year. In 1969 her husband David accepted a

position in the sociology department at UNCG and they and their

children moved to Greensboro. Marlene “retired” for four months

and then went to work at NCA&T University teaching engineers how

to use FORTRAN, and writing programs (what we called analyzing and

coding then). After adoption of their fourth child, Marlene stayed

home and volunteered in the schools of the children. She returned to

work part time in the computing center at UNCG. Computing support

had many names at UNCG over the years. Marlene left UNCG after

directing Instructional and Research Computing a few years. She

maintains an interest in young people and math, science, and

computer programs. For many years she was on the Sigma Xi math

puzzle contest committee. She is happy to have a small part in the

AAUW Greensboro STEM activities.

History of the Academic Computing Center at UNCG - excerpted from A History of Campus Computing at UNCG, 1967 -1990

Academic Computing Center Staff , f rom left to r ight, Joretta Kepfer, Robert Lock, Brenda Caple, Hetra Mark VII, Car l Ballard, Theodore Hildebrant (Founding Director) , and Marlene Pratto, 197 6

The Academic Computer Center opened its doors on Octob er 1, 1973 with its main office in the Graham Building and an additional two locations in the Petty Science Center. The center was placed under the direction of Dr. Joseph R. Denk, along with five permanent staff positions and eight student assistants. The primary function of the center was to support instructional computing. The center held workshops to help faculty and staff become acquainted with the computer and what it could offer. These workshops provided introductions about the facili ty on services, policies, file and data management, and basics of computing.

On August 1, 1976, Dr. Theodore Hildebrandt was named director of the center. Along with its ful l -time staff, the center also hired student workers. The students were divided into two types: Student Consultants and Student Attendants. The Student Consultants were hired to provide help with programming and debugging for the student and faculty users. The Student Attendants dealt with the operation of the medium -speed HETRA terminal, providing couri er service, and other housekeeping duties.

AAUW Greensboro Branch Strategic Initiatives

NCCWSL

National Conference of College Women Student Leaders Project Coordinator, Barbara Carter

AAUW Greensboro offers NCCWSL scholarships to women from local C/U partner colleges and universities three years ago. To attend this conference, sponsored by AAUW national every spring in Maryland, college women require both registration costs and travel expenses.

Women in Nontraditional Careers With a community action grant from AAUW National, and additional funding from the Women’s Professional Forum Foundation, the Greensboro Branch supports women pursuing education leading to nontraditional careers such as metallurgy, welding, and manufacturing technology

Public Policy/Communications Through Monthly Notes newsletters and frequent email updates, as well as Facebook and website postings, members are kept apprised of significant events and opportunities to advocate for women’s issues at the state and national levels. A significant special project coming up is the 2020 Celebration of Women’s Suffrage, especially as we near Women’s Equality Day, August 26.

Education

With grants from generous donors who share our mission for education for K-12 girls, we are able to offer reasonably priced or free events in the Greensboro area. To enable our STEM programs for girls, Branch has an important collaboration with the National Center of Women in IT (NCWIT) which allows high school and college women to apply for grants to fund education programs designed by and presented by the young women for girls in rising 5th through 8th grades. We also offer an annual high school conference for girls, at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, giving 8th through 12th graders the opportunities to network with each other and with college women who have successfully navigated the sometimes-difficult pathway to STEM education and careers. And, with the help of Vandalia Elementary School, we have adopted a new initiative called Books for Girls which will collect donations to equip K-5 libraries with recommended selections.
