ABA ANNUAL MEETING Showcase programs spotlight international trade issues

Relations between Canada and the United States are the focus of many ABA Annual Meeting programs given "Showcase Status" by ABA President Robert MacCrate:

"Blue Ribbon Program on the Canada-U.S. Free Trade

The ABA Annual Meeting will be held in Toronto, Canada, August 4-11.

Agreement;" "Doing Business in Canada;" "Debate on Free/Fair Trade Issues;" "North American Competition Policy;" "Structuring Canada/U.S. Acquisitions;" "U.S./ Canada Commercial Disputes;" "New International Financial Products and Problems;" "U.S./ Canada Employee Benefits Issues;" "Scouting the Undefended Border," "Impact of U.S. and Canadian Tax Reform on Cross-Border Investments;" "Management for In House Counsel?U.S. and Canadian

Perspectives;" and "Energy and Natural Resources in Canada and the U.S."

Freedom of the press in North America will be explored in "Courts and the Media." The program will feature Sen. Howell Heflin, D-Ala.; Judge Marvin Aspen, (Northern District of Illinois); James Squires, executive vice president and editor of the Chicago Tribune; and several noted Canadian jurists.

An entire day of programming will be devoted to AIDS: "The AIDS Crisis: The Legal System Begins to Meet the Challenge." Another showcase program is "AIDS and its Impact on State and Local

Government."

Issues on the cutting edge of employment law will be raised at "Privacy in the Workplace: Recent Issues and Developments" and "Career Dissatisfaction from a

Management Perspective." How women attorneys will fare

tomorrow is the focus of "The Future of Women in the Legal Profession."

Parental rights, child custody and visitation will be examined at "Child Custody: New Roles, New Rights."

"Fifty-Seven Plus Ideas to Improve Government and Other Legal Practices," covers such issues as motivation, quality of services, marketing, recruiting, internal communications and career

development. An entire day of programming will be devoted to the special concerns and needs of sole practitioners and small firms: "How to Practice Law Better, Faster and

More Economically." A trial demonstration and

critique will be presented at "The Trial of a Criminal Case: Tips for Prosecution and Defense." And leaders in the Held will discuss opportunities in criminal law practice at "Careers in Criminal Law."

Justice Shirley Abrahamson of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Prof. Paul Bator of the University of Chicago Law School, Prof. Michael Tigar of the University of Texas Law School and leading attorneys will tell how to hone your skills at "Appellate Advocacy Fine Points."

Judge Harold Greene will be the keynote speaker at "The Future of the AT&T Consent Decree." "ERISA Fiduciary Responsibility" will target ERISA and traditional trust law, in-house and independent fiduciaries, the investment process and prohibited transactions.

A special highlight is a showing of "An Empire of Reason," a documentary film commemorating the Bicentennial of the Constitution. Phil Donahue, Ted Koppel, and William Buckley are among those featured.
