Introduction
ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW is an interfacebetween ABAQUS and MOLDFLOWthat has been developed by Hibbitt,Karlsson & Sorensen, Inc.
MOLDFLOW is a set of integratedcomputer-aided engineering (CAE)simulation programs for plastics moldingprocesses. It is used widely by the plasticsinjection molding industry.
ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW allows you totranslate finite element modelinformation from a MOLDFLOWanalysis into a partial ABAQUS input file.The user then edits the ABAQUS inputfile as necessary and submits it foranalysis in ABAQUS/Standard.
Features
MOLDFLOW Simulation
The MOLDFLOW injection moldingsimulation of polymers can provideinformation on the thermo-mechanicalproperties and residual stresses of thepart resulting from the manufacturingprocess. MOLDFLOW writes thisinformation to an interface file forsubsequent finite element stress analysis.
Translation of the MOLDFLOWInterface File
ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW translates theinformation in the MOLDFLOW interfacefile into files that can be submitted foranalysis with ABAQUS/Standard. Thedata provided by the MOLDFLOWanalysis allow ABAQUS/Standard toperform shrinkage and warpage analysesbased on residual stresses from themold-filling operation.
In addition, ABAQUS/Standard canperform service analyses on componentswith or without residual stress.
Input & Output Files
Input File Submitted toABAQUS/MOLDFLOW
MOLDFLOW generates a singleASCII file to interface with finiteelement stress analysis programs. TheMOLDFLOW interface (.mab) filecontains information on materialproperties, residual stresses, and thefinite element mesh.
Output Files Created byABAQUS/MOLDFLOW
ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW reads theMOLDFLOW interface file and createsthe following files:
• An ABAQUS input (.inp) filecontaining model data such as nodalcoordinates, element topology, andsection definitions. If you are workingwith isotropic materials, the input filealso contains material property data.
• A neutral (.shf) file containinglamina material data for each layer ofeach element. (This file is created onlywhen working with layered, spatiallyvarying materials.)
• An initial stress (.str) file containinginitial stress data. (When executingABAQUS/MOLDFLOW, the user canrequest that this file be omitted andinitial stress data ignored.)
If applicable, the neutral file and the initial
stress file are read into ABAQUS/Standard
during the initial step.

Assumptions Usedto Translate theMOLDFLOW Data
When creating the ABAQUS input file,the ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW translatorassumes that the ABAQUS mesh, usingS3R elements, coincides with theMOLDFLOW mesh. In addition, thenumber of layers in the ABAQUS S3Rshell elements is equal to the number ofequally-spaced, through-thickness pointsdefined for the MOLDFLOW analysis.
When working with layered, spatiallyvarying materials, ABAQUS/MOLDFLOWassumes the following:
• Laminated composite shell elements.
• Lamina material properties are givenin the principal material direction ofeach layer.
When working with isotropicmaterials, ABAQUS/MOLDFLOWassumes the following:
• Homogeneous shell elements.
• Properties of the first element are usedfor all elements of the model.
Preparing the ABAQUS InputFile for Analysis
Once ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW hascreated the ABAQUS input file, the usercompletes the file by adding theappropriate boundary conditions, loads,and other necessary information. Whencomplete, the user submits the input filefor analysis.

ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW Version 6.2requires installation of ABAQUS/StandardVersion 6.2. ABAQUS/MOLDFLOWis available on the followingengineering workstations:
• Compaq Alpha
• HP
• IBM
• SGI
• Intel
The interface is licensed separately fromthe ABAQUS solver products.
Problem Size & Performance
ABAQUS/MOLDFLOW has no built-inlimits on problem size. Smaller problemsrun entirely in main memory. Buffering tosecondary storage occurs automatically asthe problem size increases.
