When burning coal, petroleum products, natural gas as well as municipal and hazardous waste pollutants are created, that are emitted with the flue gas. In most countries laws and regulations exist that govern allowable emission limit values (ELV’s) and volume flow of pollutants – gaseous components and particulate matter – in the cleaned flue gas.

Many types of plants from power stations, steel works, cement plants, chemical and petrochemical plants down to smaller production units or municipal facilities are liable to comply with these standards regarding emission of pollutants into the atmosphere.

—CEM-DAS Reporting made easy

Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) A ceMs is the total equipment needed for the determination of a gas and/or dust (particulate matter) concentration and a conversion to produce results in units of the applicable emission limitation. Depending on the kind of fuel and local environmental regulations, a number of gas components, preferably cO, nOX and sO2 are to be monitored continuously in the flue gas at the stack along with dust, gas flow, temperature and O2, sometimes H2O as well. in case of waste incinerators or co‑incinerators of alternative fuels, additional components such as HF, nH3, Hcl, Hg and Volatile Organic compounds (VOc) may be required to be monitored. Measuring data are transferred to a specific Data Acquisition and Handling system (DAHs) for further processing and reporting to the authorities. the availability of a DAHs is superior. in the uK and Germany only type approved DAHs’s are permitted for continuous emission Monitoring (ceM).

CEM-DAS system overviewABB’s ceM‑DAs is a Pc‑based Data Acquisition and Handling system for continuous emission Monitoring. it is a complete, networkable system for continuous recording, and evaluation of emission data in all industries. the system provides important information for the environ‑mental and economic operation of production facilities. ceM‑DAs is scalable to support smallest one stack installations up to multi‑ block plants with numerous measuring points. ceM‑DAs has proven its robustness in a German tÜV test which requires 99% uptime.Field data from gas analyzers, dust monitors, etc. can be acquired via conventional i/O’s or Modbus tcP/iP. these data are processed in the ceM‑DAs server.

All results are saved in a database and on the file system. Optionally, a Data Acquisition unit can be used to buffer field data. A standard web browser allows access to ceM‑DAs to view bar charts and line charts, generate reports or change configurations.the system is designed for remote maintenance. this allows remote users access to ceM‑DAs to support the commissioning process or help with day‑by‑day questions.
