1 Abbeydale, Sheffield Ninth Circuit, Yorkshire ABBEYDALE, South View Road Chapel, the head of the Ninth Circuit, in the City of Sheffield, is a magnificent building. The kind of architecture is revealed by the picture itself.A commodious and well-lighted Sunday School, with suitable vestries, are under the chapel. The whole of the structure is at the bottom of South View Road and Vincent Road, and faces directly upon Abbeydale Road, and has an imposing appearance. The original cost was £5,100. Towards this our friend, H. Adams, Esq., gave one sum of £700, and afterwards presented the Trustees with an organ which cost £400. The annual ground rent is £26 11s. 8d. The foundation stones were laid August 29th, 1891, and memorial stones were laid November 19th of the same year, and February 20th, 1892. The opening services commenced on February 21st, 1893, and on April 17th and 20th a bazaar was held in the Montgomery Hall, which realised £682 19s. 9d. The Rev. John Slater, with unwearied energy, ably supported by his colleague, the Rev. Paul Peacock, and the sagacious Rev. William Cutts, and the Rev. John Hirst, of honoured memory (supernumeraries), with a staff of able officials and a people willing to work and give, with H. Adams, treasurer, and Albert Payton, secretary, carried the work out to a successful issue. Our people for a considerable time worshipped in a room in Sellers Street. They were hampered in their work and inconvenienced for want of better accommodation. Nevertheless the neighbourhood was greatly influenced by their presence and work. The fruit of their labours continues until this day, in the active and valuable services of Joseph Earnshaw, William Woods, David Croft, &c. When the circuit launched the scheme of Abbeydale, it was evident that Sellers Street Mission people themselves were not equal to the

undertaking,thereforeJohnStreetchurchmustpreparetomakeagreatsacrificeandadviseandarrangeforsomeofthebestlifetojoinwiththefriendsfromtheMissionRoomtomaketheprojectasuccess.TheChurchatJohnStreetwillinglyprepareditselftomeettheemergencyandarrangedtodraftoff,agreeablytoallconcerned,butnotwithoutapainfulsenseofseparation,someoftherisingandmostpromisingpersonsandfamiliesintheirmidst.Thesacrifice,however,hadtobemade,andmadeitwasinallgoodgrace,andfriendlyrelationsstillexist.AmongthosewhoonceservedtheConnexionatJohnStreet,andwhoarenowzealouslyaffectedinthegoodcauseofGodatAbbeydale,areEdwinWellsSmith,JamesSivil,JohnLomas,WilliamSchorah,N.Ross,ErnestandGladstoneAdams.TherearealsoseveralusefulfamiliesfromBethel,CambridgeStreet,whoworshiphere,R.F.

HirstandthefamiliesofCapewellandGlossopareactivesupportersintheChurch.Theyall,withbecomingpride,delighttocallthiscentreofreligiouslifeandoperation‘TheAbbeydaleChurch’Fromthefirstthesuccesshasbeengreatandencouraging.Thepresentdebtisonly£1,447.Thereisnowalargeandgrowingcongregation;amembershipof188;awell-organisedSundaySchoolwith404scholarsand47teachers;membersabove14yearsofage,40;under14years,120;aBandofHopewith185JuvenileAbstainers,and70AdultAbstainers;abranchoftheBibleandPrayerUnionwith100members;aChristianEndeavourSociety,ActiveMembers136,Associates,6.WhilstthisChurchislessthanamilefromJohnStreet,itisinthemidstofatleast30,000people.TheenterprisingspiritoftheChurchisclearlymanifest.ChieflythroughitsinstigationSheffieldFifthCircuitwasdividedintothreestations,thatthisChurchmighthavepastoraloversightofamarriedminister,andforthispurpose,withDoreandDronfield,smallcountrysocieties,itacceptedtheresponsibilityofsupportinghim.TheRev.J.R.Tranmerisnowincharge,bytheappointmentofthelastConference,andshouldthebeginninggivedirectiontothecourseanddeterminetheendheissuretohaveahappyandusefulterm.SomeconsiderationwasgiventoextendtheworkofGodbeforetheFifthCircuitwasdivided,andprovisionwasmadebythekindnessoftheCircuitSteward,Mr.H.Adams,bysecuringeligiblesitesinthegrowingneighbourhoodsofJunctionRoad,whichisallottedtotheFifthCircuit,andCarterKnowleRoadwhichisinthehandsoftheNinthCircuit;whilethewholeofthedistrictofWoodseats,wheremostofthespecialimprovementsoftheMidlandRailwayarenowbeingmade,Ann'sRoad,Keeley,willfindan

opportunitytodevelopitslifeandresources,andshowtherealspiritandgeniusofChristianitybysecuringland,andwithaslittledelayaspossibleenteruponevangelisticworkwithadeterminedpurposetocreateanewinterestwherealreadymanyofourpeoplereside.Herewearesuresoonavigoroussocietymightberaised.Theonecircuit,SheffieldFifth,nowdividedintothree,theFifth,Eighth,andNinthstations,goodandcompactastheyare,mightbeconsiderablyimprovedandstrengthened,andinsteadofhavingonlyonepreachereach,theymighthavetwo,iftherapidlyincreasingdistrictsreferredtoweremissionedandcentresofreligiouslifeandactionbroughtintoexistence.ThespiritthathasanimatedPrimitiveMethodismintheFifthCircuitfromitsoriginuntilthisday,wefeelconfidentwillinthefutureshowitselfineachsection,withenergy,strength,andusefulnessinextendingtheKingdomofGod.—APHA.__________________________________________________________________________________ReferencesChristian Messenger 1900/21
