Rock-climbing

When it comes to getting fi t and

staying active, some are happy

to beat a path on the road, or a

treadmill.

But there are others looking for

a different kind a challenge — a

vertical one. They crave that slow

and steady climb, fi ghting gravity

every inch of the way. But before

you head out in search of your

rocky playground, it’s wise to get

a foothold on some training.

The folks at Project Climbing

Centre understand the need for

a challenge, and they’re there

to help. They offer courses

from beginner to advanced,

and provide training in their

9,000-square-foot centre. They

also have a full schedule of

drop-in times for all ages.

If rock climbing doesn’t appeal,

maybe throwing rocks will.

Curling

Curling is a true Canadian sport,

and Abbotsford has embraced

it fully. Our full-time curling

facility is home to numerous

teams of all ages, from juniors

to seniors. The dedicated staff

and volunteers at the Abbotsford

The Abbotsford Entertainment

been home to many of the

big touring acts in the past

year, including Toby Keith,

Sarah McLachlan, Professional

Bull Riding and the Harlem

Globetrotters. In the coming

months, it’s going to host

Maroon 5, KISS, Cirque Du

Soliel, Celtic Thunder and Disney

on Ice.

When it’s not hosting a Christian

youth event like Historymakers

or a festival like Vaisakhi, the

arena is welcoming hockey fans

to enjoy some fast-paced AHL

games.

The AESC, located at 33800

King Rd., is home to The

Abbotsford Heat, the farm team

of the Calgary Flames, that

plays approximately 40 games a

season in Abbotsford.

The team just wrapped up its

second year.

Seven-thousand fans can be

seated in the arena for a hockey

game, while entertainment

performances can seat 8,500.

“This building was built for the

community and the surrounding

regions,” said AESC general

manager, Jason Blumenfeld.

“We want to bring something for

every aspect of the community.

We strive for the AESC to be a

fabric of the city of Abbotsford.”

In keeping with that mandate,

the AESC recently implemented

a walking program, inviting locals

to exercise in the stadium.

Since opening in May 2009, the

arena has also hosted Reba

McEntire, the Tragically Hip, ZZ

trucks and wrestling.

Home to the main campus

of the University of the Fraser

Valley (UFV), Abbotsford reaps

the benefi ts of having a post-

secondary institution.

UFV and Abbotsford have

grown together since 1974. The

school now serves more than

16,000 students, most of them in

Abbotsford.

UFV’s operating budget is about

$100 million a year, with a major

economic, social and cultural

impact on this community.

UFV provides a wide range of

educational options. Having

a university in the community

helps attract new business,

and offers many benefi ts. There

are often lectures, workshops,

conferences and sporting events

for the public to attend.

In addition, UFV alumni are found

in every sector of the workforce

in the Fraser Valley.

UFV and the City of Abbotsford

are working more closely

together than ever on two

exciting projects.

The city is working to create a

lively university district, adjacent

to the Abbotsford campus.

And UFV recently announced

a new spinoff location in the

Clearbrook Library. This centrally

located campus will help

connect UFV directly with the

community, municipal services,

and local businesses.

The event features the largest

competition.

Magic acts will be performed

throughout the grounds all

And highlighting this year’s

entertainment is the Milord

Swing-Up Trampoline-Wall

Show. This year will also feature

the return of the popular Lord

Strathcona Mounted Troop,

originators of the Musical Ride.

Of course, the fair also includes

the free KidZone, ICW wrestling,

Want to be a ‘top chef’ in your

own home?

All it takes is a handful of

good, fresh ingredients and

a willingness to explore your

senses. But to get you started,

there are plenty of cooking

classes around town ready

to help you with your culinary

adventures. Neatfreakz Kitchens

has been offering classes for

the past four years, bringing in

chefs from all over the country,

including Anthony Sedlak from

the Food Network’s popular

show The Main.

Sales clerk Rebecca Clark has

taken in a few classes at the

Abbotsford store’s kitchen, which

can hold up to 23 people.

“It’s a nice night out,” she says,

and a good option for a unique

date night.

“It’s fun to do something different

than go sit at a restaurant,” she

says. Plus, you’ll be taking home

those kitchen skills to recreate

that date over and over again.

Lepp Farm Market has joined in

the fun, too. They have classes

planned well into the summer,

with themes like cooking with

fi re, cooking with whiskey, and

traditional canning lessons.

Chefs there include Chef Dez,

Rob Feenie and Anthony Wotton.

For a full list of upcoming dates

and prices, check out each set

of classes on the web,
