If in doubt, throw it out.Consumers who purchased beef
in recent weeks should check thedates and packages, after the CanadianFood Inspection Agency confirmed thepresence of E. coli O157:H7 bacteriain beef cuts shippedfrom the giant meatpacker XL Foods inBrooks, Alta.
In what is the largest beef recall inCanadian history, the CFIA imposed anation-wide recall on beef processedfrom Aug. 24 to Aug. 29 and Sept. 5 atthe processing plant.
Meat that may be tainted has beensold across the country, includingBritish Columbia outlets of the Real
Canadian Superstore, Extra Foods, the Real Canadian Wholesale Club,Thrifty Foods – including the one inAbbotsford – and other large outlets.
The stores have removed the possiblyaffected beef items, but the CFIA cau-tions the public to double check dates
on packages, and to contactthe stores if they are uncer-tain if the meat is safe.
More than 1,500 beefproducts have been recalled, rangingfrom sirloin tip steaks to roasts, tender-loins, short ribs and ground beef.
Since the list is so long, consumersare advised to ask about their beef fromthe store where they purchased it.
If they are not sure about the safetyof the beef, consumers are advised to
discard the products. Although themeat may not look or smell bad, E. coli, which comes from fecal matter, may bepresent and can lead to illness, kidneyfailure and even death.
Symptoms in humans from E. coliinfection may include severe abdomi-nal pain and bloody diarrhea, andcould significantly affect young chil-dren and those already dealing withcompromised health. People expe-riencing such symptoms should seea doctor immediately. To date, ninepeople in Alberta are confirmed to besick from the E. coli strain.
For specific UPC numbers and acomplete list of stores that may havehad affected meat, go to the CFIA web-site at www.inspection.gc.ca.

Thanksgiving may be a day dedi-cated to gratitude for what wehave and to appreciate loved
ones, but no one can deny it’s also aday devoted to homage of the turkey.
As such, many families in the prov-ince will likely be eating a bird raisedright here in the Fraser Valley, if not inAbbotsford itself.
The province of B.C. ranks third inCanada for turkey production, most ofit occurring in the valley, and accountsfor approximately 13 per cent of allnational turkey farm cash receipts.
B.C. turkey farms produced 24.3
million kilograms of meat and gener-ated $39.1 million in cash receipts in2009, according to the B.C. TurkeyAssociation.
Pat Wiebe, head of business develop-ment at Rossdown Farms and NaturalFoods in Abbotsford – one of the largerturkey producers and processors in thevalley – said that Thanksgiving followedhard on the heels by Christmas is acrazy time of year.
The family-run organization pro-duces roughly nine million kilogramsof turkeys a year, but a full 60 per centof that takes place during the tradi-tional holidays.
The company processes an averageof 4,000 turkeys or more a week, but
that number can double at Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas.
“The market is still dependent on theseasonal bird. Everyone loves their freshturkey all crammed into the months ofOctober and December,” said Wiebe.
“The last of the birds are out the doorand in customers’ hands now. Thewhole process starts in the beginningof August for us.”
Rossdown is already gearing upfor Christmas, readying replacementpoults, or young turkeys, and confirm-ing the number of eggs in the hatchery.Unlike most other growers, Rossdowncontrols all aspects of the production of

Abbotsford Police have setup surveillance cameras
outside the family home of aman with ties to the Baconbrothers following two sepa-rate shooting incidents.
The house along the ruralstretch of road is the fam-ily residence of Barinder orBrian “Shrek” Dhaliwal.
Const. Ian MacDonald saidthe cameras were set up inthe 2500 block of BradnerRoad two weeks ago, after a24-year-old man was shotin an altercation on the roadoutside the home on Sept. 4.
In January 2011, a womanrelated to Dhaliwal, reported-ly his sister, narrowly escapedwith her life after the pickupshe was driving was pepperedwith bullets in the drivewayof the residence.
The decision to deploy thecameras was made followingthe second shooting, saidMacDonald.
“It is in the interest of pub-lic safety to employ the toolsat our disposal,” he said.
“We know two shootings inthe same hundred block of aroad in a rural area in a largecommunity is significantand warrants a significantresponse.”

the notorious Bacon broth-ers were brought up duringJarrod Bacon’s recent trialand ensuing 12-year sen-tence for conspiracy to traf-fic cocaine.
The Crown counsel allegedthat Bacon, caught on policewiretap, was referring toDhaliwal when talking abouta funder who could providehim with millions to buycocaine from Mexico.
At the time, the APD saidthe 2011 Bradner Road shoot-ing was believed to be a tar-geted attack – police werefamiliar with the home, particularly with two menin their 20s who lived at theresidence.
The two men are related, with one having had as many136 interactions with police.
Despite that, Dhaliwal,29, has a limited criminalrecord that includes chargesof assault and guilty pleasof driving with a suspendedlicence.
The APD first used surveil-lance cameras to monitor aprivate home in 2008 whenthey set up the devices out-side the Bacon brothers’ fam-ily home in east Abbotsford.
The police department saidit took the exceptional step toprotect public safety.
The cameras went up afterthe gang task force issued a
public warning the Baconswere targets in a ganglandmurder plot, and after theeldest brother Jonathan wasshot multiple times in thedriveway of the home in2006.
He would survive the firstassassination attempt, butwas later shot to death out-side a Kelowna casino inAugust 2011.
MacDonald said none ofthe residents around the
Bacon home complainedabout their privacy beingviolated.
“The Bacons didn’t like it,but every other neighbourloved it,” he said, adding theAPD has had no complaintsabout the same camerasbeing used along Bradner, either.
“We’ve always enjoyed tre-mendous support from thecommunity for our publicsafety initiatives.”
The two shooting incidentsat and near the home are stillunder investigation, but it’snot clear if there are any con-nections between the two, said MacDonald.
The man who was shot out-side the home after gatheringwith a group along the roadat 2:30 a.m. did not have anyknown gang ties or criminalrecord, he said.

The Office of the PoliceComplaint Commis-sion will hold a public
hearing to re-examine alle-gations that an Abbotsfordpolice officer convicted ofassault lied about the inci-dent to an investigating offi-cer and in a duty report.
APD Const. Adam Rus-sell Page was found to haveused excessive force whenhe pushed a shoplifter intoa wall during an arrest atLondon Drugs in September2009.
Page will face two allega-tions of deceit and one alle-gation of abuse of authorityduring the proceeding.
The APD previously under-took an internal investigationand substantiated the claimPage used excessive force, but dismissed allegations theofficer had lied.
The OPCC reviewed theAPD’s internal investigationand discipline proceed-ings and decided there isa reasonable basis that thedepartment’s decision aboutthe allegations of deceit areincorrect and a hearing is inthe public interest.
The APD’s professionalstandards section originallysent a report to the OPCC inApril 2010 indicating Page
had pushed a suspect intoa wall with enough force todent the drywall, and that hehad yanked on the man’s armcausing him pain.
Following an ensuing crim-inal investigation and chargeof assault, Page pleaded guiltyand was handed a condition-al discharge and one year’sprobation in April 2012.
The APD’s discipline pro-ceeding took place soon afteron May 23, 2012.
But no wit-nesses otherthan Page andthe investigat-ing officer Staff Sgt. Carl Vree-man were called to presentevidence. Vreeman had rec-ommended both a count ofabuse of authority and twocounts of deceit.
On July 26, 2012, AbbotsfordPolice Chief Bob Rich agreedwith the charge of abuse ofauthority but dismissed thecharges that Page lied.
However, the OPCC isreviewing the allegations thatPage knowingly submittedmisleading or false writtenstatements in a duty report.
It’s alleged Page lied aboutasking the 37-year-old shop-lifter to stand up and saidthe suspect had tried to pullaway from the officer.
In the report Page also
suggested that during theincident he stepped on thesuspect’s calf and lost his bal-ance, inadvertently pushingthe man into the wall.
He also wrote that he toldthe sergeant on duty thatthe suspect wanted to talk tohim about the incident andthat the surveillance videofrom London Drugs shouldbe seized and the wall pho-tographed.
It’s also alleged that Pagelied in an inter-view with Vree-man about theu s e o f f o r c e
incident. Page suggestedthat superior officers latertold him the suspect did notwant to complain and it wasa “dead issue.”
The officer also told Vree-man he contacted the lossprevention officer at LondonDrugs to inform her that theAPD would come to the storeto photograph the damagedwall and to get the video anda statement.
Stan Lowe, head of OPCC,said a public hearing wasnecessary as the incidentwas a breach of trust and tomaintain public confidencein the police and the disci-pline process.
Lowe stated it was neces-sary to talk to all the witness-
es present at the assault andobtain evidence that was notpart of the record at the APDdiscipline hearing.
During Page’s criminal sen-tence, the court heard thatPage resorted to excessiveforce as he was frustratedbecause the suspect waslying to him. The man didn’trequire medical attentionafter the assault and didn’tlaunch a complaint after theincident.
The assault and resultinginvestigation came to light inApril 2010 after a conversa-tion between a junior officerin attendance at the incidentand a superior officer.
Ian Pitfield, a retired B.C.Supreme Court justice, willpreside as the adjudicator forthe public hearing.
A date for the hearing hasnot yet been set.

W i th the two-monthdrought in the Lower
Mainland still going strong, the City of Abbotsford parksdepartment has been busyjust trying to keep thingsalive.
“I’ve seen droughts comeand go,” said Rick Daykin,
director of parks with the city.“This was definitely a longstretch; but I’ve seen longer, even eight to nine weeks.”
As the Times reportedTuesday, Abbotsford set newrecords for rain scarcity inSeptember and August, with10.4 mm.
In September, precipitationrecorded at the Abbotsfordairport was just 6.6 millime-
tres for the month, break-ing the previous record of9.2 mm.
The average rainfall forSeptember in Abbotsford is75.9 mm.
While the city has let pas-sive lawn areas in publicparks go dormant, it is keep-ing tabs on the many sportsfields around town.
“The sand-based sportsfields are watered daily andsoil-based fields are wateredevery other day,” Daykin
said. “We’re staying on topof that.”
But he admits the dry spellhas taken its toll.
“It’s been very dry thissummer. Grass normallygoes dormant then comesback [with the rains]. Everyyear we do lose plants. Theybrown out – the leaves gobrown and plants can die,”he said.
Most of the annual bedsaround town have sprin-kler systems, while peren-
nial beds have deeper, moreestablished root systems andare not watered.
“We are very careful andmake sure we water ourplants and trees, especiallyour newer ones who need itthe most,” added Daykin.
Some trees can look dead, with leaves that go brownand fall off and then theycome back next spring, hesaid. But some don’t make itand have to be removed andreplaced.
Different species react dif-ferently to water loss.
“You can see some peopleare caring for their plants byhand watering,” he said.
Even a bucket of water canhelp a bush in distress.
If no rain comes in theimmediate future, help isstill on the way in the formof lower temperatures anddew and mist in the morn-ings, which helps all plants, said Daykin.– FOLLOW US ON TWITTER: @ABBYTIMES

its free run birds from hatch-ing, feeding, growing, pro-cessing and shipping themto market.
It allows Rossdown controlover quality of the product, which includes organic tur-keys, from farm to plate, saidWiebe.
The process starts withday-old poults heading intoclimate-controlled brood-ing barns that are designedto be warm enough for thetiny birds and give them easyaccess to water and feed.
Turkeys aren’t all that easyto raise, he said, because theyhave trouble learning to eatand drink in the first five daysof life.
“Turkeys aren’t the bright-est animals,” Wiebe said witha laugh.
“They need lots of manage-ment when they are young.”
The poults are moved fromthe brooding area into thegrowing barns when they areabout six weeks old.
The birds, which haveroom to move around in thebarn and aren’t subject to alot of stress or handling, growuntil they are 12 to 18 weeksold, when they are selectedfor market.
The turkeys are transportedto the Rossdown processingplant on Bradner Road.Therethe birds are hand-slaugh-tered with an incision to the
neck artery.Soon after, the carcass is
placed into a scalding tankfilled with hot water wherethe large feathers are loos-ened. It then makes its wayinto a barrel picker, which is asteel bin with rubber fingersinside that spins the turkeycarcass and plucks off anyremaining feathers.
The bird makes its way tothe evisceration room whereRossdown employees cleanit out by hand. The turkeysare rinsed and chilled inanother tank, then hung onlines to drain before beingsized, graded and packagedfor market.
The organic turkey is a
“completely different beast,”said Wiebe.
A s s o o n a s a p o u l t i shatched, its growth is sub-ject to strict regulationsmonitored by a third party,he said.
The birds’ feed must becompletely organic, thegrowing space provided toan organic turkey is largerand it must have access tothe outdoors.
An organic turkey alsocan’t receive medicationof any kind. If it is treatedwith antibiotics, it loses itsorganic designation andmust be sold as a conven-tional turkey.
“We are completely soldout of organic birds. Wecould have had tripled the
amount this Thanksgivingand still been sold out,” saidWiebe.
“But with organic turkey, the biggest challenge is the
price point . . . the meat issignificantly more expensive, and the average consumeronly buys an organic turkeyfor a special occasion.”

I t’s not that I don’t like spiders. It’s the terror that creeps into
the very cracks and crannies ofmy brain at the mere thought ofthem that I don’t like.
Those cracks and crannies, incidentally, are just like theones where they like to spintheir webs and lie in wait forunsuspecting arachnophobeslike myself.
Okay, I lied. I’m not unsuspect-ing. I’m ever-suspicious of dankcorners and the dark, low ceil-ings of cellars and root houses –like the root house I used to haveto enter practically every day asa boy, from autumn throughspring (thankfully, summer’spotatoes were hauled straightout of the garden, in the lightof day), to fetch the potatoes itwas my duty to peel for the eve-ning meals.
I still shudder at the merethought of stepping down intothat veritable den of arachnidiniquity - the webs crawl-ing over my hair and cheeks, brushing my shoulders andinfesting my clothing.
Layers of my brain feel likethey’re peeling away every timeI so much as spare a momentarythought for how I had to reachinto those spider-infested bins ofpotatoes.
Oh, I know they were there. Iknow there were spiders crawl-ing over my hands and acrossmy back and up my legs. aslong as I was inside that dingy, dark, below-ground root stor-age – precisely the kind of place
that spiders have claimed fortheir own since the pre-dinosaurtimes when they were among theworld’s dominant species – foot-ball-sized, with fangs the size ofballpoint pens.
Football spiders and three-footdragonflies. My colleague Mat-thew Claxton recently sent shiv-ers down my spine with his talesof spiders invading his home, taking over his world – a night-marish world, indeed.
While the day of the spiders’domination is actually in the past, not likely the future, he pointedup a fact that I try to push far intothe furthest reaches of my mind, the nether cracks and crannieswhere only the spiders mightdwell: this is the time of yearwhen the spiders rise again.
This is the time of year when, indeed, they invade my other-wise blissful, relatively spiderlessexistence. This is the time of yearwhen they seek shelter indoorsto escape the cold, hard reality offall and deadly winter. Leave theslightest crack for them, and inthey flit, scurrying almost audiblyacross the floor.
This is the time of year atwhich, coincidentally, they havereached the peak of size, their
most horrific of proportions, which in the case of some localspecies can be measured inwhole inches.
Interestingly, only the ubiqui-tous orb spinners seem not tobother me.
Oh, yes, once upon a time theydid. But one day – a sunny early-fall day like many we are experi-encing this year – I steeled myself, grabbed my camera, fitted to itmy finest macro lens, headed intothe back yard and began shootingthem.
Understand this: I do not likekilling spiders, and rarely do, ifthey keep their distance.
They have an important placein my garden’s ecosystem – aplace that I grudgingly accept asnecessary.
Like almost the only hunt-ers I have much admiration foranymore, I shot my prey withthe camera, getting up close andpersonal with a couple attempt-ing (or actually, not attempting, inthe case of the female) to mate.
Interestingly, the male mustquickly advance and avoid hismate’s fangs until he can tempo-rarily paralyze her. Or die trying.
Somehow, that photographicexercise immunized me againstmy irrational fear – of thatspecies, at least. Perhaps theattempt at understanding set mefree.
And maybe there’s a lesson tobe derived from that.

C alls for electoral reform in B.C. areincreasing in volume once again- not surprising, as it begins more
and more to look like a seriously lopsidedresult will come out of the next provincialelection.
Lopsided results tend to emphasize asmall flaw in “first past the post” voting,in which the candidate with the mostvotes wins the election, regardless of howfew votes he or she actually polls. Withthree or four strong candidates running, awinner could have less than a third of thetotal ballots cast.
That inequity can be magnified dra-matically between ridings. For instance,Gordon Campbell led the BC Liberalsto a massive victory in 2001, winning allbut two ridings – about 95 per cent of theseats in the legislature – despite receivingless than 60 per cent of the popular voteacross the province.
Traditionally in B.C., the uneven splitbetween popular votes and final out-comes in the legislature has favoured thepolitical right, particularly when therehas been greater balance between partiesvying for power.
Nevertheless, in 1996, the NDP tookmore than half of the available seatsdespite having polled less than 40 percent of the popular vote, while the losingLiberals actually received 42 per cent ofthe votes cast in B.C.
The likelihood of another lopsided elec-tion - this one almost certain to result inelecting an inordinate number of NDPMLAs – is rekindling the fires under atransferable vote system that requires acandidate to acquire at least 50 per centsupport, either initially or through voters’second (or third) choices.
This time the calls for reform are com-ing from the right end of the politicalspectrum, from folks like the CanadianTaxpayers Federation, likely because theright is split and would stand most to gainfrom a change.
But a change in balloting would notaddress the real problem. When our MLAsget to Victoria, they become blind repre-sentatives for their party. If they actuallyrepresented their ridings – and the peoplewho elected them – the first-past-the-postsystem would serve us just fine, thanks.

Editor, the Times:Re: ‘Government continues
to turn away from abortion’,Times, Tuesday, Sept. 25.
I take exception to theway in which Abbotsford-Mission Times reader GerdaPeachey has pulled an oldsaying out of context to sup-port her argument on thelack of federal governmentaction on the issue of abor-tion in her somewhat notfully comprehensible letter.
The old saying “figuresnever lie, but liars surecan figure . . .” has beenattributed to many U.S.sources, including SamuelL. Clemens, a.k.a. MarkTwain. However, Carroll D.Wright, who was a promi-nent statistician employedby the U.S. government, diduse the expression in 1889while addressing the Con-vention of Commissionersof Bureaus of Statistics ofLabor but did not claim thathe coined the expression.
He said: “The old saying isthat ‘figures will not lie,’ buta new saying is ‘liars will fig-ure.’ It is our duty, as practi-cal statisticians, to preventthe liar from figuring; inother words, to prevent himfrom perverting the truth, inthe interest of some theoryhe wishes to establish.”
The point here is thatMs. Peachey seems to bequestioning the validity of“studies that show a major-ity of Canadians support thestatus quo.”
As a former campaignspecialist for the B.C. Lib-eral Party as well as federalLiberal Party candidates,
I can assure Ms. Peacheythat political parties useextremely accurate statis-tical measuring tools todetermine the feelings ofCanadians on any subjectin their policy develop-ment process. And Mr.Harper’s political party isno exception.
As a former teacher ofEnglish, a journalist anda newspaper editor, dur-ing the past 30 years, Ihave watched the way thatspecial interest groups inour society use words totheir own advantage andtwist their long-standingmeaning.
It is not a ‘baby’ from themoment of conception butonly from birth; hence, weget expressions like, “Sheis going to have a baby” or“They are expecting a baby.”
It should not be a “littlehuman when unwanted, isburned with salt or hackedto pieces in the womb;” itshould be an ‘embryo’ or‘fetus’ no matter whetherthe mother wants to carrythe pregnancy through forthe full gestation periodor not.
As for the “abortion indus-try grows fat and rich,” Ithink Ms. Peachey is livingin the past.
And in closing, a babydoes not miscarry: the
mother does for a variety ofreasons . . . and, yes, it is avery upsetting time for allinvolved, the mother, thefather and family as it may.In many cases, it may not bethe ‘fault’ of the mother.
It can be for a numberof reasons and some areinexplicable. Life is a con-tinuum that starts beforeconception, for each adult, male and female, carry‘life’ in their own uniqueway. A stage of life beginsat conception; another atbirth, and we should use theproper terms to describeeach stage of life.

Death to selfishness, not to our children
Editor, the Times:On Sunday, Sept. 30 I
stood for an hour with agroup of anti-abortionactivists who lined SouthFraser Way during theannual Life Chain event.
As I was holding myplacard (Abortion KillsChildren), a young womanwalked by.
She said, “Yeah, weshouldn’t kill children, butif it’s a rapist’s child, whywould you want it?” Thenshe kept walking.
If I could have engagedher in conversation, Imight have responded:“Should a child die for itsfather’s crime?”
Ideally, the rapist shouldbe caught and killed (yes,I said killed). But if thatdoesn’t happen, must thechild die in its father’splace?
To conceive a childthrough rape would be anunimaginably tragic anddifficult experience. But thechild wouldn’t belong tojust the rapist; it would alsobe the woman’s child.
In fact, the child wouldeffectively be much morehers than his, since sheis carrying it, nurturing itand has sole authority andresponsibility over its life.
I recently met a man who,as we conversed, told methat he got his girlfriendpregnant some years ago.
He then pressured her toget an abortion, telling hershe “wouldn’t make a goodmother.”
He was glad she had hadthe abortion because, as hecheerfully told me, other-wise his house would notnow be fully paid for.
Rape and incest are ter-rible but such crimes leadto relatively few abortions.
The majority of abor-tions can be linked ratherto social, occupational orfinancial convenience.
Men and women, please:we should be putting todeath our selfishness, notour children.

Fire Prevention Week
– JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES
Auxiliary firefighter Bryon Schneck installs a sign for the open house at Hall No. 6 in downtownAbbotsford on Sunday morning. All fire halls will be open for visitors Wednesday night, Oct. 10.
ROCHELLE BAKER
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service is cel-ebrating Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7 to13 and is encouraging the community
to take part in order to save lives and stopneedless losses from preventable fires.
“Fire Prevention Week is important becausewe need to make people aware of the hazardsof fire,” said AFRS fire inspector MartinSunderland.
“Fall and winter are the peak seasonsfor fires and we remind people not to becomplacent, as the vast majority of fires wego to are preventable.”
A fire can spread through a home andendanger lives of the residents more quickly
than people imagine, said Fire Chief DonBeer.
“Fire is unpredictable,” said Beer.“It grows and moves much faster than most
people realize.“Having a tried and true escape plan with
two ways is essential to ensuring your family’ssafety should fire break out in your home.”
As such, the theme of Fire Prevention Weekthis year is “Have Two Ways Out.”
“The rationale is to try and encouragefamilies to have an escape plan and to practisethat plan,” said Sunderland.
“Children in school do fire drills to escape inthe event of an emergency, but people rarelyhave an escape plan in their own home.”
One main messageis Two Ways OutSave your family’s lives: take the time to make a plan
Fire FactsEscape plan tips
■ Make a map of yourhome. Mark a door and awindow that can be used toget out of every room.■ Choose a meeting place
outside in front of your home. This is where everyone canmeet once they’ve escaped.
Draw a picture of youroutside meeting place onyour escape plan.■ Write the emergency
telephone number (911) forthe fire department on yourescape plan.
■ H a v e a g r o w n - u psound the smoke alarm andpractise your escape planwith everyone living in yourhome.■ Keep your escape plan
on the refr igerator andremind grown-ups to haveeveryone in your householdpractise the plan at leasttwice a year.

objects.■ Candles knocked over by children, pets

Winter is here; don’t let your guard drop withthe temperature. Remember:■Heating appliances such as space heaters
should not have anything combustible closeby and need at least one metre (three feet) ofspace around them.■ Smoking while in bed, tired or under the
influence of alcohol or medication is the mostcommon cause of fires that kill.■ Most chimney fires occur with wood-
burning fireplaces. Ensure chimneys arecleaned and professionally inspected regu-larly. Burn only small quantities of wood ata time.■ Teach children that fire is not a toy; it
is a tool we use to cook food and heat ourhomes.
Cooking up kitchen safety:■ Avoid loose long sleeves when cooking.■ Check kettles and toasters for damaged

So love the people who treat you right.
Forget about the ones who don’t.

Kevin is seven. He can standon one leg, and likes to care
for his three younger siblings. Heis shy.
He can also play the piano asthough he is channeling Mozart – infact, the young pianist will be play-ing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17when he performs in Abbotsford onOct. 13. But because he weighs just 18kilograms (40 pounds), he’ll play on apiano with an extra light touch.
Kevin Chen of Calgary will be theguest soloist with the AbbotsfordYouth Orchestra, directed by CalvinDyck.
Using words like “prodigy” and“artistic genius,” Dyck says Kevin’s isa talent that comes along “once everycentury.”
“They assimilate music so quicklylike it’s already a part of them, as nat-ural as breathing. Whereas most nor-mal people take weeks and monthsto learn a piece and understand theintricacies, for Kevin it is obvious,”said Dyck.
He heard about the talented boy
through his teacher, Colleen Athparia,an adjudicator and renown Alberta-based pianist herself.
“Colleen told me she was having achallenge staying ahead of her young-est student,” Dyck said.
Kevin began his music studies atfive; at six he was the youngest inCanada to pass the Grade 9 RoyalConservatory of Music exams, andthis summer passed his Grade 10,both with first-class honours. Helearns three Grade 10 pieces a week, and has transposed Bach while sight-reading.
“Remember Amadeus (the movie)and Mozart writing music directlyto paper with no changes, no altera-tions? Young Kevin does likewise. He hears the music in his head butinstead of writing on paper he com-poses directly to his computer,” saidDyck.
The AYO will perform one of thepieces Kevin has written. Athpariawill play it because the chords are toobig for Kevin’s little hands.
Although shy, young Kevin enjoysperforming and made his 80-minutedebut recital with Mozart’s PianoConcerto 21, and works by Beethoven,
Schubert, Chopin and Debussy, andachieved national recognition afterhis performance at the CalgaryKiwanis Music Festival.
To fill out the program, the AYO willbe performing Mozart’s SymphonyNo. 17, and Handel’s Passacaglia.
Joel Stobbe will lead the eight-member Langley Community MusicSchool Cello Ensemble to performthe energetic Death of an Angel, by
Argentinean composer Astor Piazzola, father of the modern jazz-tango.
■ The concert is at 7 p.m., Oct. 13,South Abbotsford Church, 32424Huntingdon Rd., Abbotsford. Tickets$20/$10 at King’s Music or House ofJames. There is also a performance at3 p.m., Oct. 14, at Rose Gellert Hall,4899 207 St., Langley. See Kevin playat bit.ly/T1ECsu.

A22 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2012 THE TIMES
John Fogerty, swamp rockmaestro of the 1960s,
basked in the love fest show-ered on him by an adoringaudience at the sold-outshow last Friday (Sept. 28)at the Abbotsford Entertain-ment & Sports Centre.
From the first burst of lightand Travelin’ Band to theencore finale with ProudMary, Fogerty and his aceband gave his audiencewhat they wanted – classic, memorial rock songs fromthe heady era of CreedenceClearwater Revival and fromhis successful solo career thatfollowed.
While the tour is ostensiblyto promote a new collabora-tive album to be released thisfall, Wrote a Song for Every-one, it was a night of nostal-gia and emblematic musicfor the boomer generation.
There were plenty of white-haired geriatrics pumpingtheir fists in the air along withthe music, but there werealso many younger faces inthe crowd.
“I know this song – myparents used to play this alltime,” shouted a bubbly 20-something female fan.
Like Proud Mary, the hitsongs just kept on rollin’ – 29of them over the two hour-plus performance.
Eager fans were on theirfeet from the start, dancingand singing along to the rockand pop hits – Who’ll Stopthe Rain, Centerfield, TheMidnight Special, Born onthe Bayou, and many more– like it was 1969.
He may be 67, and sportingdyed hair, but you couldn’ttell Fogerty’s vintage fromhis rock star jumps and agileromps from one corner of thestage to the other. The voicehasn’t changed – Fogerty held
nothing back to hit the highnotes and to lift the emo-tion imbued in songs such asLong As I Can See The Light,or The Old Man Down theRoad.
Along with the physicality, the man and the band werealso on top of it musically.Fogerty the showman knowswhat his audience wants andhas superb musicians to backup his talent.
Switching guitars for almostevery tune, (he uses 25 guitarsduring the concerts) Fogertyfed off the positive energy ofthe audience.
T h e s o u n d w a s g re a tthroughout the venue, andsongs were augmented bystrong video visuals on threegiant screens – old homemovies, Woodstock scenes, news clips of war and warprotests, or abstracts tomatch the moods and tounderscore the sentimentsof the times.
It was plain to see – Fogertyloves what he does. He says inhis opening comments that“rock ‘n’ roll is my favouritesound in the whole world.”
The program masterfullyled the audience throughsongs that are alternativelylight and sweet, to dark andsultry, and included somecovers from back in the day– Bo Diddleys’ Before YouAccuse Me, Marvin Gaye’s IHeard it Through the Grape-vine, and Roy Orbison’s PrettyWoman.
The songs seemed so inno-cent somehow, such as Downon the Corner, but Fogerty’santi-war anthem, FortunateSon, still carries an emotionalkick that resonated with theaudience, many holding upreal Bic lighters in solidarity.
There were no doubt tearsin many eyes through thenight.
Fogerty is the real thing– if he comes this way again, don’t hesitate to join thecrowd to see him.

the Rick Hansen Hurricanes footballteam scored on its first two possessionsen route to a 36-21 win over NorthDelta’s visiting Seaquam Seahawks ina battle of honourable mention teamsFriday at Rotary Stadium.
Two of the ‘Canes wins this seasonhave come from opposition forfeits.
Reagan Doucette and Jasnoot Dhail-wal led the charge along the ground, each rushing for more than 100 yardsin the win.
Doucette carried 13 times for 225yards and two touchdowns, and alsocaught a 44-yard TD pass from quarter-back Alex Ho. Dhaliwal rushed 16 timesfor 135 yards and one score.
“Rick Hansen is a big, experienced, talented and physical team,” saidSeaquam coach Jerry Mulliss.
“Their defensive line and lineback-ers were just too much for our guys tohandle.”
Canes’ head coach Paul Gill was satis-fied with the result.
“We were pleased with the way we ral-lied to the ball, with a number of gangtackles on [star running back Mark]Lego,” said Gill.
“He is the real deal, a quality backthat we, for the most part, did a greatjob defending. He did rip off a few longruns on us but for the most part I feltour starters did a great job.”
On the whole they did, rushing for371 yards and passing for 270 to finishwith 641 total yards of offence.
Gill’s gang-tackling bunch, led byZac Toews (eight tackles), made lifetough for Seahawks quarterback AdamDobie.

In their tightest game to date, the W.J. MouatHawks posted a 47-33 win over the West
Vancouver Highlanders Friday. The 14-point margin of victory was Mouat’s
smallest of the campaign, but it’s beginning tolook like the 2012 edition of the Hawks is oneof the most dominant ever fielded by headcoach Denis Kelly.
Magnificent running back Maleek Irons car-ried 33 times for 376 yards and six touchdowns, bringing him to 1,438 yards and 24 majors onthe season through five games.
“Yes, Irons ran for six TDs,” saidWest Van coach Shawn Anderson,“but he had to earn them againstour defense.
“They are a great team. I have noidea how many carries and yardsIrons had tonight, but I have neverbeen as proud as I have am rightnow in our guys because they madehim earn every yard. The Mouatoffensive line is impressive but ourguys held their own.”
Hawks quarterback Mario Nartepassed for 181 yards on six completions (6-of-10), firing a 24-yard TD pass to tight endChris Brake.
Jake Firlotte and Sheriden Lawley each led
the Hawks defence with five tackleswhile Stephen Munga and CrysthianRivas each totaled four tackles.
“I was quite happy with ouroverall second-half performance. The offensive line and Irons tookcontrol,” said coach Kelly. “We justcouldn’t fully capitalize in the redzone, however, and that led to aclose finish. West Van played hardand well to the very end.”

BERT WARDEN
Faith That Matters
If our recent viewing ofthe Olympic Games does
nothing more, it should helpagain to dispel the myththat human beings are nomore than the highest formof life in a long upward evo-lution of the animal world– that, plainly speaking, weare not just animals.
As an entity, the humanbody is the most complicat-ed and versatile combina-tion of parts and functionsthe world has ever seen. Itwas invented and assem-bled by God thousands ofyears ago and the originalmodel is still in vogue.
The body of even thehighest primate knowncomes nowhere near themarvelous complexity anddiversity and abilities of aproperly functioning humanbody. What feats of coordi-nation, strength, expertiseand endurance we wit-nessed – and world recordscontinue to be broken.
Now it’s not that the bodyhuman has not been givendue attention. Never inmy memory have I seenso much ado in the media, both print and electronic, about the human body.
To state it plain and sim-ple, the body human, creat-ed by God in His own imageto love and serve Him, aswell as become co-creators
and co-nurturers with Himof families of fellow humans, has been prostrated tobecome a mere instrumentfor our own pleasure.
The result – the narcissis-tic, sex-drenched culture weare now becoming.
In the meantime our self-absorption has opened theway for pressure groups tomilitate against the ages-long definition of marriageas a lifelong pleasurableunion of a husband andwife, to have children andbring them up in stable, nurturing families preparedto become society’s nextgeneration.
It is not without reasonthat three of the Ten Com-mandments deal withthe integrity of the family, namely: Children are torespect and obey their par-ents – Adultery is forbidden– Lusting after a neighbour’swife is condemned.
A society or a nation isonly as strong as its families.Judging from the numbers ofbroken families in our midstwe are already in trouble.
In God’s plan of salva-tion He dignified the bodyhuman by sending His onlySon to be born of a virgin,“God contracted to a span”as the old hymn says, andlive His life among us.
In a human body Jesussuffered and died for oursins. He rose bodily fromthe dead and returned to
heaven with the echo of apromise that still rings inour ears; “This same Jesuswho was taken up from youinto heaven will so comein like manner as you haveseen Him go into heaven,”(Acts 1:11).
At that time all man-kind shall be raised fromthe dead and “Unto themthat look for Him shall Heappear the second timewithout sin unto salvation,”(Heb. 9:38). Are you ready?
Meanwhile let’s take seri-ously the warnings Godgives us regarding the useour bodies. The Bible pro-motes complete sexualabstinence before marriage.Sex between a husband andwife is the only form of sex-ual relations of which Godapproves (Hebrews 13:4).
And regarding marriage:“For the Lord God of Israelsays that He hates divorce,”(Malachi 2:6).
Fellow believers, to ourshame, statistics revealdivorce is rife in our church-es. We need to repent andreturn to the Bible’s teach-ings regarding the care anduse of our bodies, for God’sglory, for our own good andfor the future of our nation.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Oct. 7 - 13 2012★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Aries March 21 - April 19: This week bringsrelationships front and centre – and could bringromance midweek. Sunday/Monday emphasize yourhome, family, property values, security and nutrition– Sunday’s uncertain, worrisome; Monday’s lucky but“for naught.” Romance, joys with children, creativesurges, risk and reward, pleasure and beauty fillTuesday/Wednesday – for the first time in years, youmight meet viable love, even a life mate. (The sex, health, money/career and “quiet” sides of this linkwill be fine also.) A gamble is also a good investment.Tackle chores Thursday (be safe) and Friday.Taurus April 20-May 20: Tackle chores duringthis easy, smooth week, Taurus. The only problemsappear Sunday, when money and/or sex don’t mixwith friends – you might have to choose. (Hint:think of your long-term future.) Monday’s lucky formoney and employment – but stick to routine inyour own efforts – let luck come from the outside, the cosmos. (All month, a sweet thread of romanceand beauty wends through your life – Monday holdsa hint of “destiny” in this – but again, let it happen toyou rather than chasing it.) Home, domestic affairsmidweek. Romance, creativity and pleasure sweetenlate week.Gemini May 21-June 20: The romantic themecontinues – and now, for the first time since 2009,you can actually succeed in a joyous way. Ditto forcreative projects, self-expression, speculation, sports, games, gambles, children – you’re ready for new, fresh ways and horizons! (All this will be more obviousand significant next week.) Money urges need cautionSunday/Monday. Buy nothing – yet an odd luckwill boost you. (In home finance?) Travel, friends, communications go well midweek – inspiration incareer/work has deep, fertile roots: dream big! Home, family, irk and please Thursday to Saturday.
Cancer June 21-July 22: Home, kids, food, nature, garden, soul, security and retirement baskin a smooth, productive atmosphere for the next twoweeks, so launch projects and carry them throughin these basic areas. (NOT in career, politics, etc.)The only exception is Sunday/Monday, when yourenergy and charisma rise, but your efforts might meetopposition or an “empty response.” Yet, from thecosmos, a “destiny event” could bring unasked-foraid from your government and/or mate. Receive, don’tstart or push. Chase money midweek: deeper down, love’s inspiration brews. Errands, calls, Thursdayonward.Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Errands, paperwork, reports, media, short trips, light friends and siblings fill theweeks ahead. All is smooth and productive, exceptSunday/Monday, when weird desires grip you andlife ignores your efforts. So rest, pray. Oddly, thecosmos might bring (unbidden) a gift – a friendship, abeautiful home item (buy nothing) a work pay raise?Your energy, charisma and clout soar midweek: askfavours, start things, make important contacts. Love’spossible. You feel secure, and will, for decades. Chasemoney, buy things Thursday/Friday (but not 1:30 to6:45 p.m. Thursday, nor Saturday).Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The emphasis continueson money, earnings, buying/selling, possessions, memory, rote learning and sensual relationships. These, after 3 years of restriction, are finally buoyant –so put on your $ glasses, and go forth! (Except Sunday– dangerous notions – and Monday – nil results. Oddly, though, you’ll be chirpy, happy despite roadblocks, and the universe might bring you something lucky, especially in domestic, property or love areas.) Lie low, retreat and rest midweek: contacts with government, therapists and agents succeed. Your energy andcharisma soar Thursday onward.
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Your charisma, energy, clout and effectiveness reach a yearly high, Libra. It’s actually a several-year high, so go forth duringthe next two weeks – make important contacts, startsignificant projects, and ask for co-operation – you’llget it. The only “warning” exists for Sunday (whenhealth or misgivings about partners can cause upsets)and Monday, when you should NOT begin projects.(However, Monday might bring you a legal, travel, learning or love “gift” – accept!) Your popularity soarsmidweek – light romance, optimism, wish fulfillmentoccur. Lie low, rest Thursday onward.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Retreat, rest, contemplate and plan (except Sunday/Monday,when unreachable goals will float into your mind).Feed your spiritual side, meditate, do yoga, becharitable. Deal with government agencies, counsellors, therapists, institutions and corporatehead offices. These places/people favour you now toOctober 21, will offer sound advice and benevolentaid. It’s a great interval for planning retirement, making security investments, etc. Your imaginationis strong, productive Tuesday/Wednesday, and yourcareer benefits. Light sociability, optimism bless youThursday onward.Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Light romance, popularity, wish fulfillment, entertainment, optimismand a feel for the future that permits you to makegood, intuitive plans – these fill this week and next, and fill them more joyously and buoyantly than at anytime since 2009!Tackle chores Sunday (carefully) andMonday (routine tasks only). Love, understanding, fartravel, philosophy, education, publishing and culturalevents fill midweek. This entire first half bringsdomestic, property, career and money inspiration: animportant one. Thursday noon to Saturday accentsstatus and career – lucky Friday.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Be ambitious –higher-ups are observing you, might test or challengeyou Sunday/Monday. This needs subtle handling: ifSunday, be realistic, steady and diplomatic: avoid allgossip, collusion. If Monday, be willing but delay anyproject starts until at least Tuesday. (Or, no test – justa face-to-face with authority, police, etc.) Midweekaccents mysteries, detective work, finances, changesand sexual urges – pursue these. All week, you can“order” information, or imagine futures, that createnew, superb life goals. Wisdom, legal affairs, learning,Thursday afternoon onward.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Love, wisdom, intellectual activities, far travel, culture, internationalcontacts, publishing, religion, philosophy, legal affairs– these fill the two weeks ahead. Careful Sunday/Monday, with chores, safety procedures, health – anddon’t mix money and friends. Relationships exciteand please you midweek – jump on opportunities, seek new horizons, approach that lively, naïve andregal person. You are inspired, and destiny takes ahand, in sexual, intimate, health, career and incomezones. You might buy a status symbol. Results showThursday onward, in sex, health and finances.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies onmysteries, sexual urges, lifestyle changes, health, bigfinancial decisions and partnership/spousal finances.Be a detective, look beneath the surface. Romance, creative urges and speculative temptations mightcome to you Sunday/Monday, but you’d be wise tosteer clear. Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday –you’ll get a lot done. Monday to Wednesday bless youin relationships (especially if you meet someone in agroup) and bring inspiration/good imagination aboutyour future – and your social life. Crucial relationshipsarise Thursday (argument) and Friday.
