Student success at The Accelerated Schools is distinguished by a culture focused on higher education. That emphasis on achievement also integrates continuous improvement of teaching methods and professional development that ultimately helps ensure students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at the college or university of their choice. Since 1994, that first school has grown into a warm and thriving community of schools that continue to serve as a shining example of achieving educational reform in the urban community of South Central Los Angeles. And we are still growing! The Accelerated Schools were founded on the belief that every child be treated as gifted, with an emphasis on high expectations for student achievement, a supportive learning environment, and extensive parent involvement. At The Accelerated Schools, all incoming students are accepted by lottery, regardless of academic achievement elsewhere. The Accelerated Schools will graduate students who are prepared to succeed at the university of his/her choice; who will enter the workplace as informed and productive employees, entrepreneurs, and community leaders; and who will act as responsible citizens.

Our philosophy is that in order for children to be successful in the twenty‐first century global society, each community needs schools that focuses on the development of the whole child. It is not enough to teach children to give them the tools but to teach them to be inquisitive about what the tools are used for and in relation to what and in what context.

AMPS a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public benefit corporation, was originally founded as Jingletown Charter, the first charter school granted in Oakland, CA in 1993. The intent of the original founders was to create a school that offered a safe alternative to the local school district middle school options available to families in the Fruitvale District of East Oakland, CA. In 2004, after a decade of dismal results, the OCA school board recruited a new administration and underwent a reorganization that refocused on producing strong academic results and reducing the achievement gap among its primarily urban Latino, and Black low‐income students. By 2008, OCA was named as a Federal Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Since then, AMPS has grown to six public schools across the East Bay including two high schools, three middle schools, and one
