You can choose to use these in whatever way is appropriate for the audience of your communication. For instance, serif typefaces such as Noto have a more classic, traditional feel to them. Also, many people consider large amounts of text to be easier to read when set in a serif typeface. Sans serif typefaces, like Source Sans Pro have a clean, modern look. Using these two typefaces in combination, and taking advantage of the different weight options available, allows you to create the right mood for your communication, whether it is traditional and prestigious or cutting edge and vibrant. There are two typefaces available for use with the UoM core brand: Noto Serif and Source Sans Pro.

Note: When no brand fonts are available, the following safe fonts can be used for both Macs and PCs:

• Please note that we do not use ampersands. Always use the full word “and”.

• Sentence case is the preferred style for type. However, all caps may be used when necessary to create clear hierarchy in a document that has many levels of headings, or in tables and infographics.

• It is recommended that long document body copy should appear in either UoM Blue or 80% black.

This device is used to provide visual separation between text elements, most commonly between a document heading and its opening paragraph. It also performs the same function as part of the identifier.

The length and weight of the text divider should match that of the identifier (view the Identifiers section for details).

The way type is used in this execution is fresh and modern, but fairly conservative. It prioritises legibility, with a bold headline in Noto Serif, and a short introductory paragraph in Source Sans Pro Semibold.

It is an appropriate look for a general UoM audience and reflects the tradition and excellence, which are core attributes of the UoM brand.

University of Melbourne Extension Program 2018Boost your ATAR and experience uni life at a world-class universityThe University of Melbourne Extension Program (UMEP) allows you to study a university subject area during Year 12 and gain valuable academic skills while getting a head start on your future studies.

Experience University lifeThe Extension Program offers a real university experience. Most classes are held at our Parkville campus, where you will study alongside first-year university students. You will have access to the Library network and receive a University of Melbourne student card and email account. You can use teaching, learning and study spaces on campus, and benefit from a range of online resources through the Student Portal. Extension Program students are welcome to join any of the Student Union’s 200+ clubs and societies.

Earn University creditIf you enrol in a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree after finishing Year 12, you could receive credit for the subjects you completed as part of your Extension Program studies (without any university tuition fees). You could choose to accelerate through your degree, enjoy a lighter study load in first-year or study additional subjects to open up more study pathways and career options.

Earn an ATAR contributionYour Extension Program studies can contribute to your ATAR as a fifth or sixth VCE subject. Depending on your mark, three to five points will be added to your ATAR aggregate (the score used to calculate your final ATAR).

The table below outlines the points you will receive and the equivalent VCE study score value.

Average mark for UMEP subjects

ATAR aggregate contribution

Equivalent VCE study score

90 or more 5.0 points 50

80-89 4.5 points 45

70-79 4.0 points 40

60-69 3.5 points 35

50-59 3.0 points 30

International Baccalaureate (IB) students are not eligible for an ATAR increment. However, they are eligible for all other program benefits.

Maximise your Year 12 successExtension Program students often report that the program helped them to become more confident in their academic abilities.

Completing first-year undergraduate subjects can improve your study skills overall, and may help you achieve stronger results in your VCE or IB studies.

The Extension Program is freeThe University of Melbourne does not charge any fees for participation in the Extension Program. All course and subject fees, on-campus teaching costs, student services, events and activities are provided free of charge.

Please note that some off-campus School Centres set fees to cover costs including printing, teaching and learning resources, venue hire and staff costs. Not all School Centres charge fees, but the fee information for those that do is detailed on the Extension Program website.

In this execution, Source Sans Pro has been used in the title. The use of a sans serif font like this gives the design a more contemporary feel, which suits the contemporary nature of the Faculty of VCA and MCM.

In this design, a light weight of Source Sans Pro has been used to give the publication a modern, technological feel.
