Royal connections abound while there are castles to admire, a National Park to explore, and exciting entertainment on offer in theatres and bars. Enjoy a day sampling one of the region’s many whiskies or play a round on one of the exquisite golf courses.
The Granite City The city of Aberdeen sweeps towards the sea and is defined by a curved beach, popular with surfers and walkers, as well as iconic granite architecture which sparkles in the sunshine. Historic buildings are everywhere from the impressive turreted Town House on Union Street to the beautiful Marischal College and Museum, which recently underwent a £68 million renovation to become the new council corporate headquarters.
The beautiful squares and gardens add the perfect backdrop to this amazing city, lovely green spaces where you can take some time out from the bustle of the city centre. Duthie Park was opened to the public in 1883 after being donated to Aberdeen by Miss Duthie several years before. Fountains, ponds and statues adorn this space while the Winter Gardens house exotic plants. Johnston Gardens is also popular, a charming retreat boasting a rustic bridge and a large rockery.
If you prefer something a little more lively, Aberdeen’s nightlife is fantastic with churches converted into impressive bars and nightclubs and plenty of restaurants serving both local and world cuisine – many of which have been recognised for their outstanding dishes by the EatScotland

The unique collection allows you to explore the city’s connections with the sea and this is the only place in the UK where you can view displays about the North Sea oil and gas industries which have been integral to the growth of Aberdeen.
At the heart of the city, Provost Skene’s House is another great free attraction presenting a fascinating window to the past. Dating from 1545, a series of period rooms have been carefully furnished to show the changing fashions and tastes from the 17th to the 19th century. The Tolbooth, another of Aberdeen’s oldest buildings, is a well-preserved example of a 17th century Scottish jail.
One of the most celebrated regiments of the British Army can be uncovered at the Gordon Highlanders Museum. Examine the dramatic 200 year history through uniforms, medals, weapons, art and a huge archive of papers and diaries. You can see 12 Victoria Crosses as well as a host of other medals.
Scotland’s third oldest university, the University of Aberdeen, was founded in 1495 and is architecturally striking. A stunning combination of medieval and Renaissance craftsmanship, King’s College is an integral part of this, while 2012 will see the opening of a new library incorporating both media and technology and offering public spaces, exhibtions and events. Close by is St Machar’s Cathedral, the oldest granite cathedral in the world.
The Year of Creative Scotland is a great time to visit iconic artworks and Aberdeen Art Gallery is an attractive late 19th century building with an elegant marble lined interior. Housing one of the most important collections in the country, works range from Raeburn, Hogarth and Ramsey to Monet and Damien Hirst and there are also costume, furniture and ceramic exhibits, to name just a few. The Aberdeenshire landscape provides evidence of the people who inhabited this region centuries ago. An impressive range of stone circles and carved Pictish symbol stones are scattered throughout. Visit the mysterious Kinord Cross, near Aboyne, a kite-shaped stone from the Pictish period that is ornately decorated with interlacing knots and rings. Shrouded in mystery, Sunhoney is a stone circle which stands on the shoulder of a hill near Echt, surrounded by a ring of ancient trees.

Scotland’s Castle TrailExplore striking cliff-top ruins and imposing fortresses, walk in spectacular castle grounds and hear tales of gruesome battles along the Castle Trail. Each is unique and with a total of 16 castles to choose from, you really are spoilt for choice.
Crathes Castle is a firm favourite with families, offering regular children’s events and quizzes as well as an adventure playground and special trails. In the summer, the painted ceilings are illuminated while during the winter months, it is easy to imagine yourself transported back to a time when oil lamps and candles lit the interiors. The fairytale exterior can be appreciated from the grounds where ancient yew hedges frame the upper sections of the garden.
Head to Fyvie and explore a castle said to be haunted with legends and folklore stretching across 800 years. Stunning Edwardian interiors are truly wonderful and you can visit a collection of arms, armour and paintings as well as the racquets court and bowling alley.
Tolquhon is also on the trail, noted for its highly ornamented gatehouse which was built to impress rather than deter enemies. In the laird’s
What to see & do
bedchamber you can discover a secret hiding place, a hidden compartment where Sir William Forbes, 7th Lord of Tolquhon, hid his valuables.
Make sure you take some time to explore Dunnottar, an east coast landmark sitting on a rocky outcrop a couple of miles south of Stonehaven, where you can also enjoy a spectacular cliff-top walk.
Download a copy of the Scotland’s Castle Trail leaflet by visiting www.visitscotland.com/castletrail.
Coastal TrailDrive the established Coastal Trail at your leisure, taking in 165 miles of cliffs, coves and beaches and stop off at the picturesque towns and several fantastic nature reserves. Teeming with wildlife, keep your eyes peeled for bottlenose dolphins, seals and porpoises as well as a host of seabirds including puffins.
You can begin or end your journey at St Cyrus National Nature Reserve, which is awash with colour during the summer months and a great place to see fascinating birds in spring and autumn. See countless butterflies and moths,
enjoy enormous sand dunes and spot peregrine falcons circling high overhead.
Several lighthouses adorn the east coast while you can visit Fraserburgh to learn more at the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses. Climb to the top of Kinnaird Head, the first ever lighthouse built on the Scottish mainland, and enjoy a selection of exhibits such as social history artefacts, a collection of glass lenses and interactive displays. Rattray Head is another of the shining beacons visible on this route.
Stop at charming fishing villages like Portsoy, which is home to the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival in summer, where both historic and larger vessels are on show. This was one of the earliest ports to be established in the region and it boasts a number of buildings dating back as far as the 1600s. Stonehaven, Crovie and Sandend are also excellent stops along the trail, each offering its own character and charm.

But that’s just one of the Trust’s castles in the area and they are all different. Follow the Castle Trail throughout Aberdeenshire and be prepared for impressive architecture and artworks, colourful gardens, wildlife watching and, of course, some great homebaking!”

Prestigious golf is on offer at courses such as Royal Aberdeen, the sixth oldest in the world, where you can test your skills within a natural ecosystem which boasts rolling fairways and rich turf. Cruden Bay is another popular option, an old fashioned links course commissioned by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company. In 2012, the much heralded American billionaire Donald Trump’s golf course development on the Menie Estate is due to open.
In the city of Aberdeen itself, Transition Extreme is a centre with facilities for climbing, skateboarding and even BMXing where novices can get tuition from the experts. The challenging layout will also test the skills of those with more experience.
If you fancy skiing, snowboarding or tubing, look no further than the Aberdeen Snowsports Centre where you can have fun on the slopes all year round. This is also Scotland’s first outdoor ski slope to have an airbag so that enthusiasts can perform tricks before landing safely. Lush farmland nurtures a range of wonderful produce, fresh fish comes from the fast flowing rivers and nearby sea, while quality lamb, venison and beef are all available in Aberdeen City and Shire. It is no surprise that this region is regarded as Scotland’s natural larder and you can sample the delightful variety at restaurants and cafés or simply visit a farmers’ market.
Between spring and late autumn, salmon fishing in the rivers is plentiful and quality smokehouses use this and trout to produce unique and distinctive flavours. Much of what is brought ashore ends up on the menus at restaurants the very same day. Some of the finest seafood in the world is caught off the east coast and Peterhead is the UK’s leading white fish port where the catch is landed most of the year. Indulge in lobster, crab, lemon sole and mackerel or enjoy the milder taste of cod.
Aberdeen Angus beef is well worth seeking out, offering a delicious flavour and texture renowned throughout the world, while the rowie is a local delicacy. Those with a sweet tooth can enjoy shortbread, a fine accompaniment to a cup of tea, produced locally by Dean’s of Huntly.
Helen Dean first created her traditional shortbread for friends and family in 1975 and it wasn’t long before her fame spread far and wide. You can find another well-known brand – Mackie’s of Scotland – in Aberdeen City and Shire. Luxury ice cream is made using milk and cream from the cows on the dairy farm.
There is nothing quite like a dram of whisky to wash down a hearty meal. Why not tour historic distilleries to really get a taste of the region? Royal Lochnagar is located beside Balmoral Castle and was awarded its Royal prefix following a visit and tasting by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Here the malt is fruity with hints of pine. At GlenDronach Distillery near Huntly you can take a guided tour to learn more about the richly sherried single malts from the malting floor to final product.
Handcrafted beers are also on offer in Aberdeen City and Shire and you can enjoy flavoursome options like Macbeth, a golden ale created at the Deeside Brewery.

Scotland’s Star Quality!- A simple, impartial, consistent approach to quality
VisitScotland, under the Scottish Tourist Board brand, runs the star grading schemes which assess the quality standards of all types of accommodation and visitor attractions from castles and historic houses to garden centres and arts venues. We quality assure over 70 percent of the accommodation in Scotland and 90 percent of the visitor attractions – so wherever you want to stay or visit, we’ve got it covered. Each establishment is reviewed once a year. We do the hard work so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
How does the system work?
Our advisors visit and assess establishments on up to 50 areas from quality, comfort and cleanliness to welcome, ambience and service. The same star scheme runs in England and Wales, so you can follow the stars wherever you go.
It should be noted that those establishments that fail to meet our minimum standards will not be awarded a star rating.
Graded visitor attractions
Visitor attractions from tourist shops and museums to leisure centres and tours are graded with 1 - 5 stars depending on their level of customer care. The focus is on the standard of hospitality and service as well as presentation, quality of shop or café (if there is one) and toilet facilities.
The promise of the stars: it is clean, tidy and an acceptable
standard
it is a good, all round standard
it is a very good standard, with attention to detail in every area
it is excellent – furnished using high quality materials, superb food where provided and friendly, professional service
an exceptional standard where presentation, ambience, food where provided and service are hard to fault
Establishments awarded gold stars have consistently achieved the highest levels of excellence within their star grading.
A consistent standard wherever you stay
We grade all types of accommodation from hostels, through to B&Bs and self catering properties to hotels grand and small. We even grade campus accommodation and parks offering holiday homes and camping. So whether you prefer to spend the night under canvas or the canopy of a four-poster bed, we’ll make sure you know the standard to expect.

QualityAssurance
We want you to feel welcome

As well as the established Walkers Welcome and Cyclists Welcome schemes, there are similar schemes for:
Anglers Bikers
Classic Cars Golfers
Children Field Sports
Groups Ancestral Tourism
This means that a bothy or bod has been inspected
The Thistle symbol recognises a high standard of Holiday Park

New Holiday Parks scheme
This year VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance scheme. The star awards now better reflect the aspects which impact on your enjoyment of your Scottish park holiday, the things that you told us are important to you. This has resulted in changes to the level of awards given to some parks but you can still be assured of the same high level of customer service and all the facilities you’ve become accustomed to.
Because we care
The Green Tourism Business Scheme has been championing sustainable tourism in the UK, and has become the largest and most successful scheme of its type in the world.
Businesses that work in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way are graded:
Bronze , Silver or Gold .

How to read the listings
Now is the time to choose your holiday accommodationThis guide has been split into five accommodation sections for both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire:
Establishments are listed within these sections in alphabetical order by location and then by business name. Each entry has a map reference relating to the maps which appear on pages 56 and 57 of this guide. The maps are helpful if you don’t know where a particular town is in relation to the area that interests you. Where establishments are listed as ‘By’ a city, town or village it is wise to check the exact location with the operator before making your journey.
BookingAccepting accommodation by telephone or in writing means you have entered into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately.
Insurance & cancellationsShould you have to cancel for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you can be insured against any compensation claim. Please ensure you take out cancellation insurance prior to your trip. PricingThe prices of accommodation, services, and facilities stated in this guide are based on information received from the relevant advertisers. Please note that the prices include VAT where applicable and are for your guidance only (VAT as at November 2011). Please check prices when you book accommodation and confirm exactly what the quoted price includes.
SmokingThe majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés are smoke-free by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, B&Bs and Guest Houses are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so. To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directly when booking. For further information, visit www.clearingtheairscotland.com.
ü Look out for the Short Breaks symbolAberdeen City and Shire offers a fabulous range of quality assured accommodation as listed on pages 21 - 50. Please look out for the short breaks symbol within entries. Contact them direct for current special offers or to make a booking.

You told us you wanted our star awards to better reflect the aspects which impact on your enjoyment of your Scottish park holiday, so we listened and now focus on the things that you told us are important to you.
This has resulted in changes to the level of awards given to some parks but you can still be assured of the same high level of customer service and all the facilities you’ve become accustomed to from Scottish Holiday Parks.
