Mission Statement

• "The mission of the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering is to serve and benefit the people of Kentucky and beyond through learning, discovery, and engagement in engineering for food, agricultural, environmental and biological systems."

Objectives

1. Educate engineering students so that when they become engineers they can successfully design components and/or processes for advancement of agricultural, biological, or environmental systems.

2. Prepare students to be engineers with successful careers in industry, government, consulting firms, or academia. Successful careers begin with employment in their chosen field, continue with steady advancement, and include professional development.

Criterion 3: Outcomes

• Are the following appropriate?– Outcomes– Outcome Metrics– Outcome Standards/Goals– Outcome Evaluations– Outcome Recommendations

Outcomes (Objective 1)1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and

engineering to solve problems.

2. Use techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

3. Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

4. Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.

5. Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs.

6. Solve BAE problems that are vague or poorly constrained.

7. Utilize research and technical literature to interpret key issues or concepts.

Outcomes (Objective 2)8. Effectively communicate interpersonally, formally, and

technically whether oral or written.

9. Recognize the need for, and have an ability to engage in life-long learning.

10. Work within a team approach to complete projects with many facets.

11. Work in a multi-disciplinary environment.

12. Understand professional and ethical responsibility.

13. Appreciate contemporary issues arising from industrially-relevant design questions.

14. Understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and social context.

Student Feedback

• BAE in general• Advising • Are you are being prepared for the

“real world”? • Engineering Science (outside the

department)• Senior Design• Anything else?

After today…

• If you have anything to add over the next few days…– Email Dr. Crofcheck or Mr. Mattingly

Objectives? Outcomes? What’s the difference?

Page 15: ABET Student Forum September 20, 2010. Review of the criterion Criterion 2: Objectives Criterion 3: Outcomes Criterion 5: Curriculum.

Objectives? Outcomes? What’s the difference?

• Think cucumbers and pickles!

The farmer tries to grow the best cucumbers!

After time and processing, the product is pickles!

Sometimes, feedback from Claussen about what kind of cucumbers make the best pickles can help the farmer grow better cucumbers for making pickles.
