According to Davenport (1990) a business process is a set
of logically related tasks performed to achieve a defined
business outcome.
Reengineering implies changes of various types and depthto a system, from a slight renovation to a total overhaul.
James Teng (1994) define BPR as "the critical analysis and
radical redesign of existing business processes to achieve
breakthrough improvements in performance measures."
BPR is done to integrate various business functions like
ERP, SCM, KM, HRM, CRM, etc.

Birth of Scientific Management under Frederick Taylor (1880 1900).
In 1990, Michael Hammer, a former professor of computerscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),published an article in the Harvard Business Review, in which heclaimed that the major challenge for managers is to obliteratenon-value adding work, rather than using technology forautomating it.
Thomas Davenport and John Short of Ernst & Young supportedthe idea.
Enjoyed a fair share of critics. By1993, as many as 65% of the Fortune 500 companies claimed
to either have initiated reengineering efforts, or to have plans todo so

the organization and describe what sets it apart from others
in its sector or industry.
Producing vision statements which define where theorganization is going, to provide a clear picture of the
desired future position.
Build these into a clear business strategy thereby deriving
the project objectives.
Defining behaviours that will enable the organization to
achieve its' aims.

Producing key performance measures to track progress.
Relating efficiency improvements to the culture of the
organization
Identifying initiatives that will improve performance.
Once these building blocks are in place, the BPR exercisecan begin.

To be successful, business process reengineering projects
need to be

and analyse.
