AGAbout Me My name is Abigail Glavy. I am a soon-to-be PR graduate from the nationally-accredited University of North Texas Mayborn School of Journalism with a minor in Lead-ership in Communities and Nonprofit Organizations. While I am interested in all aspects of PR, I do have a particular passion for a career in the nonprofit sector. Throughout the past four years at UNT, I have sought out any and every opportu-nity I could to strengthen my leadership experience through numerous roles in student organizations. In the Public Relations Student Society of America, I was the PR Officer for one year. I was the Assistant Director of Marketing for the UNT student organization, Kroo Bay Initaive, and more recently, I held the position of Director of Public Relations for the UNT Student Government Association. I was also the Communications Intern this past year at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Northeast Texas. The usual mix of graphic design skill, social media marketing and writing was incorporated in all of these positions to varying degrees. Outside of my work experience, I am a very fun-loving, determined and innovative person. Like most in the journalism industry, I thrive on deadlines and handling multiple projects at once. I love what I do, and I love using creative strategies to connect people to an organization I am a part of. I am motivated, hard working and not someone who needs much supervision to complete tasks. I was born and raised in North Texas and currently live in Denton, TX. I love live music, watching comedies and spending time with family. I appreciate you taking the time to view my portfolio. In this, you will find samples from my from coursework, internship and job experience. I hope this gives you a good look at my professional abilities, as well as a peek at my personality. Please contact me with any additional questions. Thank you.

Sincerely,Abigail Glavy

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Kicks-off Great Strides Walk in DallasLocal Fundraiser Part of National Effort to Battle Fatal Disease

DALLAS, TX - The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Northeast Texas Chapter will host its annual Great

Strides 5K walk on Saturday, May 19th, at Fair Park, located at 1121 First Ave. in Dallas. This is the

largest event for the organization, and funds raised by Great Strides go directly to life-saving research

for a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF).

In 2011, the Great Strides- Dallas walk raised over $408.000, and the chapter hopes to beat that

amount this year with a goal of $450,000. Collectively, Great Strides raised nearly $40 million nation

wide last year for CF.

Great Strides participants can check-in on the morning of the walk at 8 a.m., and the 5K will

begin at 9 a.m. Rob McCollum, formerly of the WFAA Good Morning Texas morning show, will be

this year’s emcee. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Northeast Texas Chapter anticipates almost 1500 people to

attend the event.

Teams and individuals register beforehand, as they fundraise and recruit members to their

teams. On walk day, participants will enjoy breakfast, fun warm-up exercises and have the chance to

hear personal testimonies from families with members who have CF.

Great Strides is a fundraiser for all ages. Teams of families, friends, and coworkers are formed all to

help raise money that will go towards life-saving research for a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Corporate teams include Chubb, BB&T Bank, JcPenny’s, Schwob Building Co., UT Southwestern

Medical Center, and Lazarus Financial. Abbott, Aptalis and CDM are corporate sponsors of this year’s Great

Strides walk.

Funds raised through Great Strides have helped spur dramatic progress in the lives of those who have

cystic fibrosis. Fifty years ago, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend elementary school.

Today, people with CF are living into their 30s, 40s and beyond.

Cystic fibrosis is a fatal genetic disease that afflicts 30,000 adults and children in the United States and

70,000 people worldwide. It causes debilitating lung infections that lead to premature death. More than 10 mil

lion Americans are symptomless carriers of the CF gene.

The CF Foundation is an accredited charity of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance.

For more details about Great Strides or for more information about the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Northeast

Texas chapter, please call (214) 871-2222 or visit the website at www.cff.org/Chapters/netx/greatstrides.

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Founda

tion funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made

possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, Md., the Foundation also supports and accredits a

national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care

for a chronic disease. For more information, go to www.cff.org.

Communications PlanSample Plan Developed in Journalism Course

1.Executive Summary – The Kristin Farmer Autism Center, or KFACS is a non-profit organization that focuses on the treatment and integration of children with autism. Currently, KFACS is in need of patients and funding. In order receive more patients we have focused our attention to professionals that work in the mental health and education communities. Reaching out to these communities will generate “buzz” about the organization and its unique three-component service. The goal is to receive referrals from these professionals to direct families to our front door.

2.Nonprofit Situation and Key Challenges

The Kristin Farmer Autism Center is a full-service facility that will work with children with autism. The organiza-tion is the first of its kind with three components: therapy, research and education. The three components of the center are a major strength to the organization. Unfortunately autism is growing more prevalent and there is no cure. The organization fulfills a definite need in the North Texas area.

The threats to the center are minimal. The other competitors are a far enough away for the center to have a loyal clientele. The largest threat to the center is also the greatest thing that could happen: a cure. The organization is currently seeking funding and a lack of patients will make it difficult to keep the doors open. In addition the cen-ter will also need more donations to help with scholarships for children with autism to attend the center.

3.Mission, Vision and Values of the Organization –

Mission: To improve the educational and life outcomes of individuals with Autism through research, training and direct education and intervention service.

Vision: The UNT KFAC is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of individuals with ASD and their families through implementation of evidence-based practices, high-quality research and training programs for students, and provision of professional training for autism educators in the DFW community and beyond.

Values: Innovative Research, education for students, professionals and families, and providing direct services to patients and families affected by ASD.

4. Marketing Objectives1. Enroll 25 students with autism in the program by August of 20122. Secure $500,000 in donations to the program by May of 2012

3. Obtain 100 unique visitors to the website by August 2012

5.2 Services - Services -Educational & Clinical Services - Skills-Instruction - Behavior Intervention - Parent Training - Home-Based - Speech - Diagnosis - Skills- Instruction

5.3 Stakeholder Benefits

- Researchers: The Center will comprise faculty, staff and students from a variety of academic disciplines. These research-ers will have the opportunity to conduct and be a part of cutting edge approaches to Autism. Investigations addressing questions of intervention efficacy and model validation are expected to play a central role within the Center. Center staff and UNT faculty/student collaborators will aggressively seek federal research funding, including existing autism competi-tions in the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Mental Health and US Department of Education Insti-tute of Education Sciences. Partnerships with centers and universities throughout the United States and the international autism community will also be established or strengthened, in order to create research replication sites and increase the population of potential subjects for Center-based investigations. These opportunities will be available to those research-ers involved. The Center will serve as high-quality field experience and student teaching placement sites for UNT under-graduate and graduate students. In addition, the Center will provide relevant autism training to parents, professionals, and other consumers. US Department of Education and other training grants will be applied for, in order to continue existing COE autism training programs at the Master’s and Ph.D. levels, and to develop new training programs for which there are identifiable needs and adequate projected student enrollments (e.g., a master’s-level School Psychology Training Program

in Autism). - Children and Families: Direct services within the Center will be provided to children and families, including clinical/therapeutic (e.g., applied behavior analysis, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, play therapy, family counseling), educational (e.g., special education, social skills instruction), diagnostic (e.g., comprehensive psychological and educational assessments/evaluations; audiology screenings), vocational (e.g., transition and adult ser-vices), and medical (e.g., neurological evaluations and pediatric care, in partnership with the UNT Health Science Center and/or other regional medical facilities). and as the result of grant funding and advancement donations and gifts.

5.4 Competition

The Autism Center has a variety of competitors: Fort Worth Child Study Center, Teach Me LLC and Behavioral Innova-tions. Each of these organizations share the same passion, to help children with developmental disorders. Their special services include after school programs, parent education, facilitating social skills and others. Each of these services helps the children develop a relationship with the specialists. The Autism Center promises not a variety of therapies for the child, but also encourages family involvement, parent and sibling counseling and other direct services that will help improve your child’s life, and also build a stronger family.

5.5 Differentiation and positioning

Through the three-pillar mission (research, direct services and training) the center will distinctively provide an all-encom-passing variety of therapies for child and parent, including sibling counseling, marriage counseling for parents and various different therapies for the child (see above in 5.3). The Center will implement empirically-demonstrated methods and in-terventions in order to improve the school life and the adult life of children with ASD and help build a stronger family unit through various methods of counseling.
