STORED PRODUCT PESTS

Stored product or pantry pests include several beetles, moths, that can infest whole grains or processed foods. Usually, the first sign of a problem is the appearance of small beetles crawling over counter tops, moths flying across rooms, or larvae crawling up walls or across ceilings. The solution requires finding and destroying all infested products in which these pests have developed with in , a general clean-up, and use of sealed storage containers to prevent recurring problems.

Fumigation is a method of pest control that completely fills an air space / spaces with a Fumigant Gas to suffocate or poison the pests within. It is used to control pests in buildings (structural fumigation), soil, grain, and produce, and is also used during processing of goods to be imported or exported to prevent transfer of organisms as well as damage of goods by these organisms.

Fumigation generally involves the following phases: First the area intended to be fumigated is usually covered to create a sealed environment; next the fumigant is released into the space to be fumigated; then, the space is held for a set period while the fumigant gas penetrates through the space and acts on and kills any infestation in the product, next Gas readings are taken during the process of fumigation to ensure a successful fumigation, once all is in order and the exposure period is complete , ventilation will take

Pests can contaminate food and transmit severe diseases. When pests appear in a food processing plant, infestation can occur in a short period of time if they are not dealt with immediately. Implementation of a pest control program in line with HACCP regulations assists managing pest infestation

FOOD PROCESSING

An effective pest management program in a food plant should include:• routine inspection for detection focused on areas where pests are most likely to occur: receiving docks, storage areas, employee break rooms, lockers, potential entry points, etc. • analysis of possible factors that may attract pests, such as food residue, lack of cleaning, etc. • pest treatments that do not pose a risk to employees, food products or the environment • communication and co-operation between designated employees in charge of pest control and pest control providers • recording pest control monitoring activities to measure efficiency of pest control in case of an audit and to show areas thatneed more attention

Termite treatment standards vary depending on the type of new construction. For Example construction types require

termiticide application to the areas where the structure encounters the soil. The volume of termiticide require to be applied

depends upon the construction style.

A termite soil treatment service includes treating all the soil below slab construction homes, treating all the soil around

plumbing penetrations, all the soil below dirt filled porches, all the soil below slab garages, all soil adjacent to the interior of

crawl space foundation walls, around piers, inside all voids, and the exterior perimeter of all construction types once the final

grade of soil has been established.

The HOUSE MOUSE is a small mammal, characteristically having a pointed snout, small rounded ears, and a long naked or almost hairless tail.

ROOF RATS can be black or brown. These rodents have long tails, large ears and eyes, and pointed noses. They have smooth fur with hairless, scaly tails that are longer than their heads and bodies.

NORWAY RATS have fur that is brown or grey in colour. These rodents are covered in shaggy fur. Their ears and tails are covered in scales, and their tails are shorter than their head and body.

The American cockroach is one of the largest species of common cockroach, The odorous secretions produced by American cockroaches can alter the flavour of food. Also, if populations of cockroaches are high, a strong concentration of this odorous secretion can be present. Cockroaches can pick up disease-causing bacteria.

RODENTS COCKROACHES

The German cockroach occurs widely in human buildings, but is particularly associated with restaurants , food processing facilities, hotels, and institutional establishments such as Nursing Homes . In cold climates, they occur only near human dwellings, because they cannot survive severe cold

ANTS FLIES

The Pavement Ant is dark brown to blackish, and 2.5–4 mm long. Like other ants there are the workers, alates, and a queen. Workers do have a small stinger, which can cause mild discomfort in humans but is essentially harmless

The Banded Sugar Ant is polymorphic and relatively large, with two different castes of workers: major workers (also known as soldiers), and minor workers. These two group of workers measure around 5 to 15 mm in length, while the queen ants are even larger.

Coastal Brown Ant Nests mainly in soil and builds along pathways, in gardens, against walls, under houses and if in large enough numbers can cause damage to lawns. They prefer sunny, dry areas to nest but will nest above ground if soil is available.

A typical Fire Ant colony produces large mounds in open areas, and feeds mostly on young plants, seeds, and sometimes crickets.

Drain flies are small with short, hairy bodies and wings giving them a "furry" moth-like appearance, hence one of their common names, moth Drain flies sometimes inhabit plumbing drains and sewage systems, where they are a harmless but persistent annoyance

The House Fly is the most common fly species found in houses. Adults are grey to black, with four dark, longitudinal lines on the thorax, slightly hairy bodies, and a single pair of membranous wings. They have red eyes, set farther apart in the slightly larger female.

Blow and Bottle Flies are found worldwide, occurring nearly every place inhabited by people. The name blow fly comes from the bloated condition of the rotting animal carcasses that their larvae, known as maggots, infest. Blow flies are one of the most common flies found around dead animals

Flesh fly larvae have been known to burrow from wounds into the healthy flesh of livestock. Some species can cause intestinal infections in humans who consume food contaminated with flesh fly larvae. The pests can transmit organisms they pick up at their unsanitary feeding sites.
