About Our Vineyard The first plantings at Mudbrick were in 1992 by Nick and Robyn Jones, who still own and operate the property today. The planted area is now on two distinctively different sites: the Mudbrick Vineyard at Church Bay and Shepherds Point Vineyard at Onetangi. Plantings currently include cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, malbec, syrah, tempranillo, chardonnay, pinot gris and viognier. Hand picking, hand plunging and gentle basket pressing reflect in the character of our wines. Our chardonnay exhibits the vibrancy of hot, dry Waiheke summers.

In addition to our Waiheke range, we also produce some wines from other New Zealand regions.

Waiheke is diverse. Although it is identified by its geographical boundaries of being an island it does have many different microclimates, soils and characteristics. The purchase of the Shepherds Point vineyard in 1998 secured us one of the best viticulture blocks on Waiheke Island. The two blocks have quite varied terrain, Mudbrick is planted on mostly north facing clay slopes with a closer maritime influence, and Shepherds Point lies on gently undulating terrain within a valley, under the protection of the long Stony Ridge. One of the advantages of having two sites is that we can blend separate wines together to produce a more complex and rewarding result. Differences can be exemplified with our merlot batches where Shepherds Point provides a strong leather character and Mudbrick gives dense chocolate and plum characters.

In 2011 we welcomed Patrick Newton as the Mudbrick Winemaker. Prior to joining the Mudbrick team Patrick gained a wealth of experience in the wine industry from a young age. He spent his childhood working on the family-owned Cornerstone Vineyard in the famous Gimblett Gravels wine region. Once he finished school, Patrick studied at Lincoln University, graduating in 2005 with a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology. Eager to gain experience, Patrick completed international vintages in Australia, Germany and the USA. Patrick has also worked at several New Zealand wineries including Forrest Estate, Villa Maria Estate, Constellation, Esk Valley Estate and, for four years, as Assistant Winemaker at Vidal Wines in Hawkes Bay. Patrick makes his wines with minimal handling to allow a true expression of terroir to come through in every wine. In 2014 & 2015 Patrick won the Riedel New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year competition and in 2016 he won New Zealand Winemaker of the Year.

In our vineyards we know that balance creates harmony. This is where our Vineyard Manager, Nick Otto’s experience and understanding of the Waiheke microclimate comes into play. After completing his studies he worked in wineries in Marlborough and Auckland gaining experience before heading overseas. He worked the 2005 vintage at Château La Tour Blanche in Sauternes, Bordeaux. After another two years on Waiheke learning about the unique demands of island wine production, Nick then headed back to Bordeaux for a vintage winemaker job at a small producer, followed by a move to the Hunter Valley in Australia.

After his overseas vintages Nick moved to Hawkes Bay to take a viticulture role with Delegat’s. Four years there gave Nick a very diverse experience of high quality large scale viticulture and the role as Assistant Manager of Delegat’s Heretaunga Plains Vineyards saw him involved with a number of large scale vineyard developments on the Gimblett Gravels. The position of Vineyard Manager at Mudbrick appealed to Nick as it offered him the opportunity of a more hands-on role. It enables Nick to apply his skills and knowledge to produce the best possible wines from two unique sites on Waiheke, not to mention the chance to live on the island while working in a challenging and rewarding viticulture role. Nick works closely with Patrick to create stunning Waiheke wines.

Together, the land, the soil and the people create our environment. With this in mind we have undertaken a programme of sustainable wine growing. It all starts at pruning time as the sou’wester whips the ears and smarts the cheeks! Each vine is pruned with respect to how it performed the year before… more wood for the bolshy, less wood for the shy! The prunings are mulched back into the soil.

From budburst onwards, as the shoots appear they are tucked into vertical hedges to prevent damage. Just towards the end of flowering a leaf pluck is performed by hand to remove all the leaves from around the bunches. This allows the light to shine on and the air to circulate around the developing fruit, thus reducing fungal spoilage and increasing the development of ripe flavours and tannins. Hand-harvesting is the norm for all our fruit, only the best and cleanest fruit makes it into the picking bins and on to the winery.
