About the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service

FREE confidential, phone coaching service funded by the NSW Health for NSW residents aged 16 years and over

Commenced in February 2009 The Get Healthy Service provides individualised support and advice

to assists people reach their healthy lifestyle goals in relation to: • healthy eating, • physical activity; • achieving and/or maintaining a healthy weight; • alcohol reduction; • healthy weight gain in pregnancy

Delivered by qualified health professionals The service is available Monday to Friday between 8am to 8 pm

Two levels of Service

1. Information only Information booklet One off advice by a health coach Can enrol in coaching at any time – eligibility criteria

still applies

2. Coaching Free, confidential coaching sessions over 6 months

with their ‘own’ health coach Participants set their own goal Goals can be set around healthy eating, physical

activity, alcohol reduction, weight management including healthy weight gain in pregnancy

Free support resources Can re-enrol following completion or opt for text

messaging support (Get Healthy Stay Healthy)

Focus on: Healthy eating, physical activity, weight management 10 calls over 6 months 16 years and above

Type 2 Diabetes

Focus on: Standard plus Type 2 diabetes awareness and personnel risk factors Participants with an AUSDRISK of 12 or more 13 calls over 6 months 16 years and above

Aboriginal Program

Focus on: Healthy eating, physical activity, weight management Tailored resources 13 calls over 6 months 16 years and above

Alcohol Program

Focus on: Alcohol reduction AUDIT screening tool: score 10-19 offered alcohol module. 20 and above offered Alcohol and drug service 10 calls over 6 months 18 years and above

Get Healthy in Pregnancy

Focus on: Healthy weight gain during pregnancy

Offered to all pregnant women in NSW. 10 calls over 6 months 16 years and above

Service Utilisation Feb 2009 – June 2016

- Over 40,000 people have engaged in the GHS

- Majority of participants enrol in the coaching program (84%)

- 69% of participants* score 12 or more on the type 2 diabetes screening tool (AusDrisk) and are enrolled in the type 2 diabetes prevention program

Risk Factor Profile of Participants*

Coaching participants who enrolled in coaching had the following risk factors:

33% were overweight

53% were obese

15% greatly increase waist circumference risk

53% consume less than two serves of fruit a day

88% consume less than five serves of vegetables a day

66% did not undertake the recommended levels of physical activity

Role of Health Professional in the GHS Participants referred by health professionals (including GPs): are more likely to complete the 6 month coaching program than those who

are self referred. Health professionals can promote the use of GHS: Promotional displays Referral (email, fax, phone call) Proactive referral as an adjunct to practice-based interventions for obesity

and overweight management

Summary

• Effective, evidence based telephone coaching service • A FREE service – easily accessible to all population groups • GHS users are from:

• the most disadvantaged communities as determined by SEIFA. • regional, rural and remote communities as determined by ARIA. • Aboriginal communities

• GHS users most in need of the Service • Utilises a combination of universal and targeted marketing approaches • Continues to expand and reach vulnerable groups – new modules and

text messaging support
