About the GBCAWe are the nation’s authority on sustainable buildings and communities.

Established in 2002, the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has grown to become a highly influential industry association.

Today we are a national, not-for-profit organisation that works with our members towards a common goal — to transform Australia’s built environment into one that is healthy, liveable, productive, resilient and sustainable.

We lead an industry that is building for people today, tomorrow and for future generations.

Why our goals are importantBuildings provide many benefits, including our most basic need for shelter. They also have significant impacts on our environment, health and quality of life.

Globally, buildings account for around 30% of total energy use and 19% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Construction consumes large quantities of natural resources and can result in the loss of biodiversity. While our time spent indoors can be impacted by harmful materials and lack of natural light or ventilation.

Fortunately, it’s also one of the areas where we can create positive change. The GBCA provides leadership to drive continuous improvement of building practices and create sustainable places for everyone.

What we doTo achieve our goals, we focus on three areas: we rate, educate and advocate.

RateWe certify projects through Australia’s only voluntary, holistic rating system for sustainable buildings, fitouts and communities — Green Star.

EducateWe educate people on how to design and deliver sustainable outcomes for our buildings, fitouts and communities.

AdvocateWe advocate for policies and programs that support our mission and work with industry and government to achieve these goals.

Advocating for better buildings and communitiesThe GBCA has a three-point plan to ensure Australia’s buildings are healthy, productive and resilient places to live, work and play. We encourage government to support industry by:

1. Providing visionary government leadership

2. Retrofitting and improving existing buildings

3. Moving beyond buildings to communities and cities.

1. Providing visionary government leadershipLeading by example and achieving ratings for government-owned, occupied and operated buildings, as well as delivering policies and initiatives to support and accelerate the uptake of better building practices.
