About The Watertown Community Foundation

In 1979, a group of civic leaders, looking ahead with a desire to provide a way for individuals to give back to their community, created the Watertown Community Foundation. With the leadership and commitment of the founders and the Foundation board members and Trustees to follow, the Watertown Community Foundation has attracted thousands of caring donors and will continue to serve as a resource for the community for many years to come. The Foundation has grown in its role as steward of the community’s endowment. Since first awarding grants in 1981, the Foundation has given nearly $5 million to local nonprofit groups and organizations. And, from the original $3,000 from Watertown’s Centennial, the Foundation has grown to almost $14 million in assets. Thank you to the donors who have helped us grow so the Foundation can continue to invest in the vitality and future of Watertown. Charitable gifts are made in a variety of ways and amounts. Donations have ranged from $1 to $3.4 million. Each and every donation has made a difference. The Watertown Community Foundation invests in the vitality and future of Watertown by supporting community priorities, responding to human service needs and enhancing recreation, education, arts and culture. It does this by:

• Leadership and forward thinking • Promoting philanthropy; encouraging, receiving and administering charitable gifts • Making grants to local nonprofits • Partnering with local organizations • Making strategic investments in the community

One of the most common and effective means of ensuring that the charitable organizations and causes you care about will continue to be supported long after you’re gone is to name the Watertown Community Foundation in your will or estate plan. You may choose to make small, regular contributions annually, quarterly or monthly over an extended period of time that will be co-mingled with larger endowments for maximum return and are allowed to build. No grants or distributions are made from the fund while it is growing, and its earnings during this time become part of the principle. When it has reached a pre-determined size, the investment income becomes available for use as with any other fund. Making a bequest to the Watertown Community Foundation is an easy way to transfer cash, appreciated stocks or bonds, real or personal property, or other assets. The Foundation can handle the administrative details. And, remember, contributing to a qualified charity such as the Watertown Community Foundation can be very beneficial from a tax standpoint as well.

BOOK OF MEMORY An inscription in the Foundation’s Book of Memory is a beautiful and lasting way to celebrate an anniversary, other special occasion, or remember a loved one. Commemorations with a gift of any size may be made to the general endowment fund or designated to another fund by the donor. This enduring tribute is presented in a leather-bound volume and displayed in the lobby of the Watertown Community Foundation. Contributions to the Book of Memory become part of the Foundation's permanent charitable endowment, the earnings from which are used to meet the growing charitable needs of our community. A memorial gift, therefore, keeps giving year after year.
