Environmental Indicators

Responsible ProcurementPurchasing of Environmental-friendly PaperThere has been a very rapid increase in the procurement of environmentally and socially responsible paper in recent years. As illustrated by the figures below, the percentage of recycled paper and paper from certified-well-managed-forests increased from less than 1% in 2007 to 74.89% in 2014. It is expected that this trend will continue in the coming years, as legal compliance can now be better assured to meet consumer requirements. For Leo, this means we can provide high quality environmentally-friendly paper at a reasonable cost to our clients.

Promotion of Environmental-friendlyPaperIn recent years, we have increasingly been promoting the adoption of environmental-friendly paper to our clients. We work hard to provide as much research and development necessary to help our clients with their decision making. We stress that environmentally-friendly paper provides the same, or even better, quality compared with other paper, and demonstrates how costs of manufacturing with environmental paper can be controlled.

Carbon and Air EmissionsPioneering in Carbon ManagementSince our first carbon certification, ISO 14064-1:2006 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in 2010, Leo has been a pioneer of carbon reporting and management in the region. In 2011, our PAS 2050 certification for Product Carbon Footprint further enhanced our capability to calculate and report the carbon footprint for individual products from a life-cycle perspective. This year, Leo became the FIRST organization to obtain HKCAS Accredited ISO 14064-1 Verification in the “Pulp, Paper and Print” industry.

Supplier Assessment and EngagementIn 2014, we conducted 68 on-site supplier audits to assess supplier environmental performances, product safety measures, labor/human rights practices, and impacts on society. Such assessments have also been conducted for new supplier screening purposes.

Supplier engagement is critical for materials traceability and product compliance. It also enables us to make a bigger impact in sustainable development.

The Hong Kong Certification Body Accreditation Scheme (HKCAS) is operated under the Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS).It validates organizations for greenhouse gas emissions. HKAS is a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).

VOC Emissions ControlsVOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emission is a significant environmental issue for printing enterprises. We have implemented various control measures and tested different technologies in the past years.

In Sep 2014, we worked with a professional environmental institute and tested a new VOC Control technology combined with photodecomposition, catalytic and oxidation processes. The result shows that the new technology can better control the VOC emission level, making it more than 25% lower compared with earlier control measures. We’ll continue to test the technology to develop effective and mature control practices.

Green Packaging and LogisticsPackaging and logistics is an important stage of a product’s lifecycle. Green initiatives can make an impact on the overall ecological/carbon footprint of a product. We have been working on green packaging and logistics for many years. This year’s focus has been on the promotion of Single-wall Corrugated Cartons and Plywood Pallets.

Double-wall Corrugated Carton

Plywood Pallets

Single-wall Corrugated Carton

Replacing Double-wall Corrugated Carton with Single-wall Corrugated CartonUnlike traditional double-wall corrugated cartons, single-wall corrugated cartons consist of one ply of fluted paper glued between two plies of paper. As illustrated in the pictures below, this structure can save one ply of fluted paper and one ply of surface paper. Single-wall corrugated cartons can help reduce the raw materials used and the weight of the shipments. When the carton size is small, single-wall corrugated carton can improve the utilization of a container up to 6%.

In 2014, 19.59% of cartons used were single-wall corrugated cartons for shipments from our Heshan Astros Printing plant. We will continue their promotion in the coming year, and look forward to an increase in 2015.

Replacing Solid Wood Pallets withPlywood PalletsIn 2014, we actively promoted the replacement of solid wood pallets with plywood pallets. Plywood pallets share the same loading capacity and various other characteristics with solid wood pallets, but are exempt from heat treatment and fumigation requirements. Plywood pallets also facilitate customs clearance. The raw wood materials of plywood pallets (species of wood) are much more diversified than that of solid wood pallets, making it an environmentally preferable logistics and transportation solution.

Waste Heat Recycling System for Air Compressors

Energy RecyclingUtilization of Waste Heat from Air CompressorsOur heat recycling program started in 2007, when we successfully developed residual heat recycling from our air-conditioning system and obtained remarkable results. The recycling of waste/residual heat from air compressors started in 2012. This year, we further optimized the system to achieve quality waste-heat usage.

Waste heat from air compressors is recovered and transformed into useful energy by providing hot water to our dormitories. In 2014, waste-heat provided our dormitories with 160 tons of hot water daily. This system significantly reduces the consumption of diesel fuel for heating purposes each year.

Green ITTo support daily operations, we optimize our information technology (IT) system every year. In 2014, the emphasis was placed on the introduction of green IT facilities and management in the following 3 areas. 1.Server IntegrationComprehensive evaluation and a thorough review of existing servers and related information systems were conducted this year. After the evaluation, it was concluded that servers can be re-configured through offline mode, re-routing, and virtualization to achieve lower energy consumption and lower operation costs. Such integration can result in a savings of 194,472 kWh each year.2.Software and Hardware User ControlIn 2014, we monitored the use of the company hardware and software through different means to calculate the idle time of

Participation and Community EngagementTotal Participation of Leonians‘‘Night Safari’’ at Mai Po Nature ReserveIn August 2014, Leonians and their family members joined the Mai Po Guided Eco-Tour ‘‘Night Safari’’ at the Mai Po Nature Reserve in Hong Kong. This event was organized by the WWF-Hong Kong, which offers an opportunity for participants to experience Hong Kong’s biodiversity and raise awareness to protect the environment.

Located on the northwestern corner of Hong Kong, Mai Po Nature Reserve is famous for its wetland biodiversity. Guided by professional nature interpreters from the WWF-Hong Kong, we discovered some of Mai Po’s nocturnal animals, such as fireflies and tree frogs. This trip made us more aware of the biodiversity

in our community, and strengthened our commitment to living in a more eco-friendly manner to better conserve our environment.

Volunteer Work at Island House Conservation Studies Centre Island House was the sole official residence of Sir David Akers-Jones, the former District Commissioner of the New Territories of Hong Kong. Built in 1904, it later became a declared monument. In order to preserve its cultural heritage as well as its diverse flora and fauna of the vicinity, the House became a Conservation Studies Centre after it was passed to the custodianship of WWF Hong Kong in 1986.

In the last quarter of 2014, we joined the volunteer efforts at Island House. Volunteers assisted collecting fallen leaves for mulching and grass clippings for composting. This event raised awareness of the diversity of flora and fauna in the local community.

Environmental Publicity in June 2014As citizens of Earth, everyone contribute to its protection. The theme of the 2014 World Environmental Day was “Raise your voice, not the sea level” as conceived by the United Nations. In order to enhance Leonians’ awareness on how environmental pollution affects our daily lives, and the ways in which we can work green and live green, we published a series of articles in June 2014 with topics including “Be GREEN, Take your Part”, “Be GREEN at Work” and “Tips for a GREEN Life”.

Environmental Painting Competition for Little Leonians and the CommunityOn World Environmental Day, June 5, 2014, Leo further promoted our environmental philosophy to our Leonians’ children and children from the nearby communities by holding a painting competition and sharing green tips. Environmental knowledge and tips on living a green life were shared during the competition. 152 drawings were submitted to a judging panel, which was composed of an organization committee, green harmony committee representatives, audit division representatives, and teacher representatives. In 2009, Leo set up an Anti-Corruption Governance Committee and was the first enterprise in Guangdong Province to take this initiative. We have implemented various preventive measures to uphold a fair competitive business environment. At the same time, we continue to strive for improvement on our governance and risk management to ensure corporate integrity.

• Tendering and monitoring procedure systems were extended to procurement of materials and accessories.• To ensure compliance of tender contracts, internal auditors had conducted random checks of related departments in 2014.

Enhancement of Integrity Mechanism• In Jan 2014, we started enterprise-level accountability and

Training on Tendering Management

integrity. A total of 70 senior management staff and 373 critical staff demonstrated commitment to ethical practices by signing a declaration on compliance with the ethical commitment requirements of authority, duties, and interest.• In March 2014, staff members were required to declare all conflicts of interest. It is important to disclose potential conflicts and mitigate the risks as much as possible. Through March 31, 2014, a total of 87 staff members had declared a conflict of interest.• In May 2014, Chief Supervisor of Anti-Corruption Governance Committee interviewed 15 staff members who had declared a conflict of interest. Relevant staff members were informed how to handle the conflict on kinship. Kinship can be a direct supervisor or subordinate, or anyone having a business relationship with the company in order to avoid misconduct.• Governance mechanisms are set for the declaration of interest in gift/hospitality, conflict of interest, and kinship. These aim to avoid conflicts of interest, uphold a fair, open and transparent business environment and uphold our corporate reputation of integrity.

Education on Anti-corruption• In June 2014, the Tendering Center worked with legal team, financial department, and purchasing department to deliver a training seminar to a total of 100 staff members from 13 departments who are involved in the tendering process.

The training enhanced our staff’s knowledge in tendering management, contract specification and how to mitigate risks of corruption. • Continuous learning for tendering/bidding process: as tendering for electricity, air-conditioning, LED, and machinery requires professional knowledge, our tender assessment teams strive to obtain all relevant knowledge prior to bid evaluation in order to ensure every tendering project is fair, and properly evaluated.• Knowledge and experience gained from professionals is passed on to the Tendering Centre so as to enhance process efficiency and ensure that fair and just process of tendering/bidding is undertaken.• In May 2014, we invited the Jiangmen City Anti-Corruption Bureau to deliver a training seminar “Enhance Awareness, Uphold Anti-corruption” to supervisors and staff members who work on sensitive projects. A total of 1000 participants attended.

Leo became an industrial benchmark of governance and integrity management in Guangdong Province• In September 2014, Standing Committee of Guangdong Province Committee, and Secretary of Discipline and Inspection Committee visited our Astros Plant for inspection and provided guidance on Anti-Corruption Governance. Our control measures were well recognized during the visit.

Productivity Enhancement through Automation and “Autonomation”Productivity enhancement is a constant issue for enterprise operations. When Chinese manufacturers experienced increasing shortages in the labor force in recent years, this issue became urgent and critical for achieving continuous customer satisfaction and enterprise development. It is foreseeable that this trend will continue in the coming years. In order to maintain our commitment to total customer satisfaction without adversely impacting our business operations, we are continually looking for ways to reduce our reliance on manpower while simultaneously enhancing manufacturing productivity.

Production Automation is one of the key strategic solutions to accomplish our goals. Our Production “Autonomation”, which is one of our Lean Manufacturing Tools with smart human intelligence that enables machines to work harmoniously with the operators, takes steps forward to further enhance the

overall problem-solving mechanism automatically. Through the integration of automatic equipment and a number of systematic procedures and workflows in place, bulk production has shown improvement in efficiency, productivity and quality.

In 2014, our automation and autonomation project involved the self-development of 891 machines/devices, of which 425 were automation/autonomation machines, and 466 were production jig and fixture aids. These initiatives aim to enhance productivity, which helps to achieve better quality, lower labor intensity, require less space, and optimize manufacturing flow.

1. Automation - Replacing Handwork with MachineryThe Replacing Handwork with Machinery initiative mainly focused on labor-intensive production processes. Such technological innovation has also reduced the physical and mental load of

2. Digital Indication and Warning Lights The addition of indicators and warning lights which includes sound signals for acoustic warnings in addition to visual.

3. Tooling improvement - Jig and fixture aidsIn 2014, we made vast improvements to jig and fixture aids for gluing processes, card pressing processes, and ribbon gluing processes, which aimed to achieve autonomation.

4. Single Piece Flow with AutonomationWe implemented single-piece flow with the integration of automation and autonomation at our paper bags manufacturing workshop. With this modification, the energy efficiency was improved by 127% and saved up to 3,480 man-hours per month.

relevant operators. 24 projects were completed in 2014, with examples including:

Automatic gluing machine Automatic sealing machine

Automatic hole punching machine Automatic counting machine

Faster meal serving by installing sensors on conveyance belt

5. Semi-automation for Leo CanteenIn 2014, we extended the success of automation and autonomation at our production workshops to our canteens. Semi-automated facilities were introduced to shorten the meal serving time. Service quality was also improved for these canteens that serve thousands of customers per hour. Benefits of the semi-automation initiatives at the canteens included:

1. Faster meal serving – by installing sensors on conveyor belts to allow our employees to take their meals in no time right after card payment;2. Faster access to tableware – by re-arranging and placing tableware near the take-away counter; 3. Better queue up – by queuing up in a single line to enable faster movement.

One of our core productivity enhancement projects in 2014 was to integrate information technology into the Heshan Astros plant in order to provide immediate, accurate, and intelligent analysis and deliverables. We developed Business Intelligent platform software for the printing process, post-press finishing process and bookbinding process. On-site visual tools, such as warning indicators, were also installed to provide immediate signals to management staff. This intelligent system ensures our management staff receives real-time production data and allows them to give an immediate response, hence achieving real-time production, higher productivity, and better customer satisfaction.

Our Card Production Workshop is the first workshop to utilize the system beginning in August, 2014. The system consolidates complicated production data from multiple sources, and then presents the results in a very direct and simple way. The system enables users to have real-time interactive access for better monitoring and decision making. We plan to expand its application to the bookbinding workshop in 2015.
