About Us
Toyama New Industry Organization
(TONIO)
Director General of the Asia
Business Promotion Center
Yoshiaki Kamata
Served as Chief Representative
of Mitsui Hochiminh Office and
as EPA Advisor of JETRO (Japan
External Trade Organization)
Jakarta Office. Currently Director
General of the Asia Business
Promotion Center
Toyama Prefecture is proud to have developed one of the most advanced
industrial complexes along the Japan Sea coast, with a focus on electronic
components, machinery, and the metalworking and chemical industries.
Currently the prefecture accounts for a large share of the domestic market for
the aluminum, plastics, machinery manufacturing, and pharmaceutical
manufacturing industries.
With this industrial infrastructure as the backdrop, Toyama Prefecture
launched its Northwest Pacific Region Trade Center in October of 1993 in
order to promote economic exchange with the Asian region, particularly with
those countries along the Sea of Japan. In October of 2004 this organization
became part of the Toyama New Industry Organization and it was relaunched
as the Northwest Pacific Region Economic Center. In recent years there has
also been an increase in the number of Toyama based companies seeking to
expand their business to Southeast Asia, to countries such as Thailand and
Vietnam, and in April of 2018 the name of the center was changed to the Asia
Business Promotion Center in order to support economic exchanges with the
whole of the Asian region, exchanges which are set to increase ever more in
number going forward.
At the same time, all parts of the Tokai Hokuriku Expressway were opened
in 2008, the Port of Fushiki-Toyama was selected as the general hub port for
the Japan Sea coast in 2011, air services began between Toyama and Taipei
in 2012, the Hokuriku shinkansen began operations on March 14th of 2015,
and there has been major progress in infrastructure for land, sea, and air.
The Asia Business Promotion Center provides one-stop services for your
global development needs through our Toyama Prefecture overseas market
development support desk and our trade and investment consulting services
in order to support Toyama Prefecture companies expanding globally. We also
have a variety of other services such as subsidies for overseas market
development and e-mail newsletter services so please feel free to consult with
us. We hope to be of assistance.
Toyama: A Business Hub for the Northwest Pacific Region Toyama Prefecture is situated roughly in the middle of the Japanese archipelago. It takes around two to three
hours to reach Tokyo, Osaka, or Nagoya by rail from Toyama. The Hokuriku shinkansen began operations in March
of 2015, progress is being made on the development of air routes and sea routes to countries on the opposite side of
the Sea of Japan, and the prefecture has received attention as a business hub for the Northwest Pacific region.
This is a (partial) reproduction of the map created by Toyama Prefecture of the countries in the Northwest Pacific region/East Asia, commonly called “the inverted map.” (2012 情使 No. 238) The air and sea routes have been overlaid on the inverted map for greater convenience.

2. Promotion of International Economic Exchange
1. The Toyama General Manufacturing Industry Trade Fair
Since 1999, the Northeast Asia Economic Exchange Expo
(NEAR) has been held with the aim of stimulating the economy
of the Northeast Asian region and supporting the expansion of
business opportunities for companies in and outside of Toyama
Prefecture. Beginning with the sixth expo in 2010, NEAR was
held concurrently with the Toyama Techno Fair, sponsored by
the Toyama Prefectural Machinery and Electronic Industries
Association, as the Toyama General Manufacturing Industry
Trade Fair. However, these two events were merged beginning
from the eighth expo onward (The Toyama General Manufacturing
Industry Trade Fair 2015). We are working to provide ever

I was satisfied in finding promising products.
I was very grateful for the responses and support of the staff.
I felt the sophistication of those attending. I was also inspired by
the sincerity towards manufacturing. I hope that it continues and
expands in the future.
I’m glad that I was able to see concretely and learn
about the items being produced by companies.
I was surprised that there are many companies exhibiting
from Japan and abroad.
Seeing the conveyer companies, I felt like in the future we won’t
need people anymore. The technology is amazing.
