A Memorable DG VisitIt was that time of the year when the club becomes a

hornets' nest buzzing with busy bees. The much awaited event of the year when the District Governor

thofficial visit was on Wednesday (12 Nov). President Venky and team had made elaborate arrangements to ensure that this official visit enters the archives of midtown in style. The tradition of popping surprise with

midtown fun began with a big band of midtowners joining the Governor for a sumptuous breakfast at Ramya. The entourage then went to Murugan medicals where DG Rtn.Dr.Bhaskar Shrinivas inaugurated the new look Rotary banner atop Murugan medicals. Instead of the regular Rotary message on the board, this year the banner invites public to join the Rotary movement. Later Governor was taken around fully decked up RMA, a visibly happy Governor appreciated the yeoman service of people behind RMA. Soofi trust was the next destination where Governor witnessed the service activities. It was then time for a closed door meeting with the Governor going into the details with President and Secretary. The club assembly was well attended and began with a powerpoint presentation of all the projects for the current Rotary year, thanks to the efforts of newbie Rtn.Gopal the new look powerpoint captured the essence of Midtown. DG Rtn.Bhaskar appreciated the efforts of midtown and exchanged thoughts on various aspects. He stressed on membership retention and extension, also asked the club to look at increasing the strength of women in the club. A tasty working lunch was waiting at the end of the club assembly.

A big surprise awaited everyone at Pai Vista in the evening. A well designed backdrop, thanks to Rtn.Srini, coded the theme of the evening – fun and frolic. The showmen of Midtown Rtn.Harish and Rtn.Dr.Prahlad took the show by storm in trademark Midtown style. True to the repute the duo effortlessly converted the stiff collared, formal meeting into a rupture of laughter without of course diluting the essence of Rotary. The duo dressed up as Visiting Rotarians from Andhra entered the hall to floor the audience with their wit and humor. “Thousand apologies, nayana,..” and so many pun replete dialogues profusely flowed making the

Annette.Pranav Prahlad completed the “Prahlad's” show onstage by introducing the Asst. Governor in a unique way. District Governor in his address to the audience shared valuable thoughts and experiences and prompted the Rotarians to participate & contribute to Rotary. A seemingly happy Governor expressed his satisfaction, just then another surprise was in store for the Governor couple. Having informed that he will not take any gifts or mementoes during club visits, the governor & first lady were handed over a unique memento which they could not refuse, an elegant photo of the first couple of the district was handed over. Secretary Rtn.Mohan joined the bandwagon by making his announcements in telugu which was then followed by a candid vote of thanks by beaming President Elect Rtn.Umesh. The meeting ended just at the right time when guests were ready for a gala dinner. Smiles on all faces courtesy the “telugu” duo, presence of the elegant Governor's family and a nice dinner made Rtn.Venky & team satisfied.

Chairman of the event Rtn.Harish pulled up one more masterpiece hinting things to expect when he takes up the baton. Another memorable DG's visit enters the glorious archives of Midtown. - Rock

More than 1200 students expected from

nearly 20 schools, big names in the field

o f A s t r o n o m y f r o m M u m b a i ,

Hyderabad, Bangalore were coming, total budget

crossing unexpected 1.5 lakhs, first time 2 big LCD

screens at the auditorium, after the recent Mangalyaan

success expectations were high, it rained heavily on

Friday, and forecast was more rains for Saturday, all

must have given sleepless nights to the Chairman of the

event Rtn. Raju Baliga. The agony continued – first

session post inauguration were all bouncers to the

young minds, who had come with lots of hopes of

seeing stars and planets and were made to listen to hi-fi

talks on dry topics like Remote sensing, Global

informatics Sensing etc and naturally well before lunch

the kids were restless and Raju

lost his cool and had to give a

piece of his mind to the

youngsters present, to control

their restlessness. It was

perhaps only the post

l u n c h s e s s i o n t h a t

brought l i fe to the

whole event and finally

Raju was a relieved

man. Rohan Ganapathy,

out a surprise and

was a mega hit amongst

the young audience. His

aim to inspire the children

to take up astronomy was a

stupendous success. His

simple way of explaining

complicated astronomical

phenomenon with very

good graphics was really

astonishing. Well that was

the last session. Before that Life in space station by Ms.

Sahana Jagannath, was interesting and captivated the

children. Her story of life in INRIA, Paris while doing her

Masters in Astronomy kept the students glued to the

edges of their seats. That was followed by a 20 minutes

video on life in a space station took the children to their

fantasy world. Probably more such talks were required

for the kind of audience we were targeting. In the morning it was the inaugural session wherein

chief guest, former vice- chancellor of Kuvempu

University –Prof. K Chidananda Gowda, who himself

was a scientist at NASA recalled his days at NIE and

explained few astronomical wonders. NIE Chairman

Rtn. S. L. Ramachandra, occupied the dais along with

Prof Jagannath who was the key person behind this

mega event. Kum. Smriti Baliga rendered a melodious

invocation. Sponsors for the event IOB Manager and

Asst. Managers were recognized. Ist session post inauguration was by Dr. K. M.

Jagadish, from Bombay, Dr. Venkateshwar Rao from

Hyderabad, both spoke about RS and GIS and their

applications. Both being very big names were very

humble to come to a Rotary event and that itself needs

to appreciated. An amateur astronomist Mr.

Subrahmanya from Bangalore spoke about the role of

Amateur Astronomists. The whole event was superbly anchored by Rtn.

Gopalkrishna which is a new find to midtown and

immediately got the recognition of PMC- Permanent

Master of Ceremony. Kudos to Raju Baliga and

Bhanuchandran who had done excellent groundwork

for the event. Thanks to Prof. Jagannath for his

enthusiastic support but for whom this kind of event

would not have been possible. Prizes were given to

winners of poster making and drawing competitions.

Seeni continues carry on with his A+ grade with his

magnificent banner. All in all VenkyNaMo and

ThaNaMo pulled out one more successful event in less

than a week. - Rtn. Dr. Prahlad

Aadu Aata Aadu ........... A Long Cherished Dream'We don't stop playing because we grow old,

we grow old because we stop playing.'President Mrs. Premilla Jain had envisioned

bringing together children and the elderly from various Homes in the city and get them to bond through play.

thOn November 16 – a bright sunny Sunday, about 300 youngsters and the young at heart converged at RMA School for Aadu Aata Aadu and had a ball!

Chief guest of the day, tennis ace Rtn. R. Nagaraj was the right choice to set the ball rolling. He spoke of the benefits of being a sportsman and charged the audience. Guest of honour Mr. Umesh, Manager Indian Overseas Bank – main sponsor of the event spoke words of praise for the meaningful projects taken up by Inner Wheel members. Rotary President Venkatesh and Rtn. Alagappan – Chairman RMA School graced the occasion. Bubbly Chaitra anchored the proceedings enthusiasti-cally.

Mr. Vasanth Kumar Shetty and his team from Mangalore, experts in organizing such events

conducted the different activities for children while our members kept the senior citizens entertained with fun games and music and dance. Old and young alike kept shouting for more. Ubiquitous Prabha with mike in hand and oblivious to the sharp sun was one busy person making announcements, rendering music for musical chair, giving away prizes and cheering the little ones. Dr. Gayathri was seen holding her hand bag tight as she was the treasurer for the event. Sheela Urs promptly wrote out the certificates for all the winners. All the Inner Wheel members actively involved themselves to make the event a grand success. Congratulations

to President Premilla and Secretary Lavanya who worked round the clock and meticulously organized such a mega event.

Pejawar Children's Home bagged the shield for the maximum number of medals won. Water bottles were distributed to all the participants.

We profusely thank Rotary Midtown, RMA, Interact Volunteers and our special thanks to Rtn. PP. Vishwanath Ravandur for all the support.

The best reward for us is the smiles on the little faces and the blessings of the elders.

- Chandrika
