1. About

1.1. CPA Initiatives

The Career, Personal and Academic Development Initiatives [fondly called CPA Initiative] is the co-curricular programme of ABAA which aims to enrich the quality of campus life and enables students to proactively reach out and to seek learning opportunities. These 3 areas of development are offered under 3 schemes namely: CFO - Career Focus Opportunities, SoFA - Soft Skills for Accountants, and RARE - Rapid Results for Academic Improvements. Under these schemes, activities and events are organized in a 3-stage learning progression of Introduction, Practice and Demonstration. The programme has two major themes: Spirit of Discovery and Go Through Perseverance which provides focus for these activities.

1.2. ABAA

Associate of Business Administration in Accountancy is the programme which aims to provide students with broad-based business education through the acquisition of specialized relating to accountancy. It also prepares students for their career in the fields of accounting, assurance and taxation. Upon successful of this programme, students will be able to apply the principles, knowledge and skills of accountancy in academic and work situations in a supervisory role to produce quality outputs.

1.3. CCCU

The Community College of City University is well recognized as a premier college in Hong Kong providing quality tertiary education for about 6,000 students. CCCU offers a wide range of Associate Degree (AD) programmes, a Diploma in General Studies, and International Language Proficiency Tests with preparatory courses.

2. Learning Objectives

2.1. Aims

The HKICPA Career Forum, pitched at CPA Initiatives “Introduce” development progression stage, aims to provide more information about various topics such as Forensic Accounting, Financial Advisory and Management Consultancy, and many more. Moreover, through the sharing from panel speakers, CPAs and executives, participants will have the opportunity to learn from the professionals. Furthermore, this forum gives students a better understanding about becoming a CPA and enables them to start planning their career.

3. Summary

The Career Forum comprised of various career related workshops and a luncheon with CPAs and executives. There were various workshops to choose from such as how to become a CPA, digitalization in accounting, CV doctor, Tax Compliance and Planning. The career forum begun with two sessions of career workshops, where participants were allocated to various different workshops. Each workshop had a sharing session for the guest speakers followed by a question and answer session. In the afternoon, a luncheon was held where participants had the opportunity to mingle with CPAs and other executives to gain further insights and to learn from the experienced. Following the luncheon, were two other sessions of workshops.

4. Reflection from Participants

Chan Wai Wai, Jack

I think the Career Forum is quite meaningful and useful to me. I attended in various workshops, such as Digitalization in Accounting and Path to become a CPA. Either through the former or the latter workshop, I gained a clearer sight of the prospects of my future career. The speakers of the forum are all successful professionals, their experience and ways to succeed inspired me a lot.

In this Career Forum 2017 "Leading with Strategy", I join many activities, for example, in the morning, the "Forensic Accounting" and "Financial Advisory and Management Consultancy" workshops, in the afternoon, there has luncheon cut career forum, including luncheon and mingle with CPAs, career forum - leading with strategy, souvenir presentation and group photo taking, "Professional Accountant in Business World" and "Path to become a CPA" workshop. In those activities, I learnt many precious experiences about accounting field.

Lau Chun Wai, David

The workshop can help me to know more about the CPA working environment and what qualification they needed. Also, interview session can help me to prepare well in the real interview in the future. I suggest next time we can get more interviews in different CPA firms to train our interview skills. I am glad to hear different opinion from the CFO and accountants on the lunch time, it really helps me a lot. I hope I can join it next year.

Before joining this career forum, I am not really familiar with the current situation of the accounting industry. However, having taken parts in this activity, I understood more different aspects about accounting, like taxation and auditing. I also realize that there is not only one career path after learning accounting. Generally speaking, this career forum is useful for getting more information related to accounting industry.

Firstly, I learned about the various paths of an accountant, like being a forensic accountant, auditor, consultant etc. It cleared my misconception that accounting is a boring career path. Secondly, I learned more about the QP exam which is important to becoming a professional accountant and the prerequisite to becoming manager-level or above. The advice given to us by Tony, Stephanie and Jonathan is extremely valuable and I am certain that I would like to become an accountant in the future.

It is a very good opportunity for me to meet practicing CPAs and other accountants that currently working in different career fields. I learn more about my future career paths from them and their sharing are really useful. This event and the authorities gave me a clearer vision of the accounting industry and treasurable advice for my academic studies, personal development and future job interviews.
