FORESTERS MISCELLANY 3

Printed with 100% renewable energy and vegetable based inks

Hello and welcome to Miscellany. Inside this edition, the High Chief Ranger’s charity, Rays of Sunshine, celebrate a special landmark. We meet Rachel Hardy, the Society’s new Chief

Executive. Peter Nixon, curator of the Foresters Museum, explores the story of the Society’s Juvenile Courts and we unveil the winners of the National Quiz.

This Spring 2020 edition also marks my first full year as Editor, so I’d like to say a very big thank you for all your help - and articles - so far. This includes everybody who lent me Foresters teddies and mascots for our latest front cover. Organising the picnic was great fun. It was also an inspiring reminder of how much Foresters members support charities - and each other - nationwide.

When I started planning this edition, back in January, I was already looking forward to Spring. Longer days, more sun, flowers blooming and birds singing... Spring is the season of renewal and growth, full of promise for the summer (and Miscellany articles!) to come and plans to look forward to.

By the time this edition was about to go to press, most people’s plans had become uncertain. First through the effects of horrendous flooding, and then the COVID-19 outbreak. We also heard the sad news that Non-Executive Member Director John McLoughlin and Past High Chief Ranger Denny Orton had passed away. There will be tributes to them both in the next edition.

Whether you are new to Foresters or a long-time member, hopefully during these difficult times Miscellany brings some welcome relief.

Yours fraternally,

Rory Walsh, Editor

This must be the first message from a ‘homeless’ High Chief Ranger! Since Christmas, Alan and I have received continual flood warnings. On Sunday 16 February we got a Red Alert and started to prepare. I barricaded the front door with sandbags and tarpaulin. We moved what we could upstairs. Little did we know it would be a record flood. Over four feet of water, and worse, came through the floor. We were trapped upstairs for three nights with no power. The force of the water, up to eight feet deep outside, made it unsafe to be rescued.

Billy the cat loved all the excitement, he was glued to the window! We were evacuated on Thursday. Everything downstairs is destroyed. It is surreal to see your fridge freezer floating past the stairs. We could be out of the house for six months or more. The main thing is we are safe and sound and supporting each other. We are currently in a B&B in the village but hoping to rent locally. We carry on as usual and do not intend to miss any HCR engagements.

November and December were extremely busy. There were only six free days, including Christmas and Boxing Day. In November I was invited to the Scottish Gathering, what a great weekend. I also enjoyed many meetings, meals, dances, and chats. I had eighteen Christmas Dinners, including on the main day!

What a wonderful time talking to members. Listening to personal stories, of courage, overcoming tragic situations, of helping and receiving help and support from their fellow Foresters. It is heart-warming. It is also impressive to hear members’ depth of knowledge and ideas for keeping the Society on a firm footing. I am forwarding some of these ideas to the Membership Committee and the Board.

A big thank you to all the Courts who invited me to events, and for making me so welcome. You have raised a fantastic sum for Rays of Sunshine and the generosity of Foresters never fails to amaze me. For example, at the Wales and Borders Area Christmas Lunch I came away with cheques totalling nearly £6,500. Can you imagine?! I cannot believe nine months of my year have passed already. There is so much I still want to do. Thank you all for your support. I look forward to seeing many more of you over the next three months. I also look forward to hearing your stories.

With fondest fraternal greetings,

MichaelMichael Charlton-Hubble High Chief Ranger

Milestone memoriesRays of Sunshine recently reached a very special milestone, granting its 7,000th magical wish for a young boy called Zachary. Here is his story…

Five-year-old Zachary, from Bracknell, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid

Leukaemia in February 2019. He spent seven months in hospital receiving chemotherapy, as well as undergoing surgery and a stem cell transplant. Zachary is ‘obsessed with Scotland’ and his greatest wish was to go there. He hoped to watch an ice hockey game, see bagpipers, and find the infamous Loch Ness Monster.

To make his dream a reality, Rays of Sunshine enlisted the help of Zachary’s favourite ice hockey podcast, 4000 and Counting. They organised for Zachary to watch a match. Before the game he met the teams, the Glasgow Clans and Manchester Storms.

Rays of Sunshine then organised a very special boat trip aboard the Nessie Hunter. Met by a bagpiper at the Loch, Zachary, his parents, little brother Stanley, and grandparents all climbed

aboard. Equipped with his binoculars and compass, Zachary spent an hour on the water looking out for any sign of the infamous monster. To everyone’s delight, he soon saw something off in the distance…

After his wish, Zachary said: ‘I spotted Nessie! I can’t believe that I got to see the Loch Ness Monster. Not many people get to see her, and I got to see her. She was green and scaly, a bit like a dinosaur, but friendly.’

Zachary’s parents, Katie and Mark, added: ‘We truly had the most amazing four days away. Spending time as a family and sharing these precious memories with Stanley, Nanny and Grandad made it even more special for us all. It really meant a lot to us seeing Zachary being a normal happy little boy again and enjoying all the things he should enjoy.’

There are 49,000 children and young people in the UK living with a serious or life-limiting illness. Rays of Sunshine helps to brighten the lives of seriously ill children aged 3-18 and their families.

MEMBER PORTRAIT

Get to know some of the members who support our Society

A fourth-generation Forester, Brooklyn is Assistant Secretary to Court Promise 153 and Chief Ranger to Courts Manchester’s Honour No.1 and British

Lion 44. She was recently appointed North Western Area Sub-Chief Ranger and is a member of the North Western Area Committee. As a Foresters Facebook champion, Brooklyn provides members with live social media updates from High Court and the Northern Conference. Brooklyn was also Secretary of the virtual Court Darwin and involved in the Project Acorn initiative for younger members.

Brooklyn became a member of the Society through her grandparents, Michael and Pat O’Connor. ‘You could say Foresters is in my blood. My grandparents introduced me to Foresters life, the dinners and socials - like bowling, theatre trips, weekends away’. Her first Foresters event was a Dinner Dance; ‘I always remember how at the beginning we all stood up and clapped while other people walked in with sparkly chains and fancy clothes. When it was my Nanna and Grandad’s turn to walk in like that, I remember thinking ‘I want that to be me one day’’.

Brooklyn has attended many Society events since and made lots of Foresters friends. She is often joined by her family. Her partner Stephen and their three children - Keane, Izzac, and, Skyla - are all members. ‘As a family we attend all the North Western Area social events. The boys always help to sell and collect raffle tickets and become runners giving out the prizes.’ Her sons are currently planning a fundraising activity for High Chief Ranger Michael Charlton-Hubble’s charity appeal for Rays of Sunshine. For last year’s appeal (for Action on Hearing Loss), they did a toboggan run.

After leaving school at 16, Brooklyn achieved honours qualifications in Health and Social Care. She then worked as a care assistant and activities co-ordinator in care homes for vulnerable adults with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Brooklyn has since changed career to work with children. She has worked at before-school and after-school clubs and plans to study nursing at university once baby Skyla is a little older. ‘I hope to specialise in working with Children in Critical Care.’

Away from Foresters, family life is busy. Between them Brooklyn’s sons attend classes in mixed martial arts, street dance, swimming, and gymnastics. ‘We also enjoy being outdoors, taking our two dogs out on long walks and bike rides.’ Looking ahead Brooklyn says, ‘I am very excited for the future of Foresters. I am glad that I and my family can be a part of it all. Here’s hoping for many more journeys and more stories to tell.’

Somewhere old, something newThroughout the autumn, Court Secretaries met with Nick Haynes from Foresters head office for training sessions on how to use the new Court Social Site (featured in the previous edition of Miscellany – Ed). In November, Central Courts had a training session at the Foresters Museum in Tunstall. During breaks the group enjoyed a chance to explore; ‘It was really interesting seeing all the Foresters history.’

September saw Area Chief Ranger Bob Hall reach 50 years as Secretary of Court Moorlands 9475. In thanks for his dedication, Bob was presented with the Foresters Service Jewel. Our reporter writes: ‘At October’s Area Meeting at Rudyard Lake Visitor Centre attendees came from all the Area Courts, including two new Secretaries. Welcome guests were John Springham from the Membership Committee and Ray Perry from the Rudyard Lake Trust. A raffle for the Trust raised £100.’ The meeting concluded with Bob all decked out in his medal, hat and Foresters fleece beside the Lake. (Congratulations Bob – Ed.)

A central figure

Central Area members enjoyed a grand day out at Claymills Pumping Station in October. Lisa Byatt reports: The museum has an impressive collection of steam engines. Chief among these are four imposing 26-foot beam engines dating from 1885. We were lucky enough to see a pair of them running, just as they would have in the Victorian era. We were also taken around areas of the museum not usually open to visitors, including a steam-warmed bath hidden away in the basement. The site also has a working blacksmith forge, workshop and dynamo house. It is in steam around 13 times and year and is well worth a visit.’

For their last social event of 2019, Court Moorlands 9475 visited the Clonter Opera Theatre. Their reporter writes: ‘17 Foresters travelled deep into the beautiful Cheshire countryside to see the world-famous Foden’s Brass Band accompanied by the renowned singer Matt Ford. We sang and clapped along with the ensemble as they performed their electrifying festive rendition of Memories of Christmas. One undoubted highlight of the concert was Jingle Bells, featuring four multi–talented ’Fodenettes’ as Matt’s backing singers.’

Dinner for JohnEach year Court Perseverance 2796 hold a dinner event for their late member John Burgess. Secretary Ted House explains; ‘John was a larger than life man who liked Indian food. He used to arrange an annual Court dinner at his favourite Indian restaurant, so we go back there every year to remember him.’

At the end of October, Court Perseverance 2796 members racked their brains and opened their wallets at the Court’s annual quiz. The proceeds, including raffle prizes donated by local companies, raised £400 for Breakspeare School, a local charity for children with special needs. Secretary Ted House later presented a cheque from the Court to teachers and pupils.

Courts Perseverance 2796 and Verulam Excelsior 6054 enjoyed a night at the pantomime on 13 December. Our theatre critic writes: ‘60 members, friends, and families from the St Albans Courts kicked off Christmas at The Alban Arena. Always a fun-filled well-attended event appreciated by all.’

Ashley Stammers, Secretary of Court Sailors Home 5105 reports: ‘Members enjoyed a trip to the Pantomime in December to see Cinderella. The Mercury Theatre in Colchester is being refurbished so the show was held in marquees on the Abbey Fields, which added to the occasion!’ In January members had a two-course lunch at The Fox on Mersea Island. Ashley writes, ‘Members enjoyed the meal and a raffle raised money for Rays of Sunshine, with the winner being the last name drawn out for a change!’

All fitted in

Seventeen members and friends of Court Princess Royal 2948 took to the rails aboard the Royal Coach on the Colne Valley Railway. ‘Her Majesty welcomed us to her carriage (funny - she was wearing an identical outfit to our Secretary, Joyce Dewick!), where we enjoyed drinks and a 4-course lunch. Meanwhile the little green steam engine pulled us up and down the track - only one mile long, so the trees looked very familiar by the end of the meal! A great day out, and a ‘Guess who’s sitting in the Queen’s seat’ lottery raised £85 for the High Chief Ranger’s charity Rays of Sunshine.’

High Chief Ranger Michael Charlton-Hubble writes; ‘With Area Co-ordinator Bobbie Smith and Court Secretary Becky Alderman I was invited to sit in on the meeting and join everyone for a buffet lunch. We were delighted to welcome Ria, proud mummy of Travis. Travis has a very rare condition called Temple-Baraitser Syndrome. He loves the outdoors and being able to get out in the countryside. The Court raised enough funds to buy Travis a cross-country buggy. Already it is making a difference to his life. It was a real delight to meet the family and present Travis with his buggy.’

High Chief Ranger Michael Charlton-Hubble began November with a visit to Court Pride of Sarnia 8143 in Guernsey; ‘I haven’t flown on a propeller plane for many years but arrived to find a very wet and windy Guernsey. I was treated like royalty and had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. At the Foresters office it was good to meet new and old faces and find out about the Guernsey operation. Friday evening was a superb meal with the Directors and Trustees. Saturday gave me a few free hours so I visited the German Occupation Museum, which was very interesting but sad to see how residents suffered during the war. Saturday night I was transported to and from the Court’s annual dinner. Amazing food, good raffle and great company - an excellent Foresters do. Many thanks to all that helped and made this a superb trip!’

Norrie Dudgeon, Scotland Area Co-ordinator writes: ‘The Scottish Gathering 2019 was held at The Spa Hotel, Pitlochry between 29 November and 1 December. High Chief Ranger Michael Charlton-Hubble was among the 141 members who joined in the weekend. There were two ceilidhs, a theatre trip, and around 70 members attended the Area Half Yearly Meeting. A raffle on the Friday night raised £520 for the High Chief Ranger’s charity appeal. It was great to see many new members and the temperature drop to -6 degrees didn’t spoil another successful event.’

First-time attendee Humphrey Clarke of Court Wellington 3449 adds:

Down in South London we had heard glowing reports of previous Scottish Gatherings, so when the

details were announced for the 2019 event my wife Janice and I thought ‘Why not?’ We were greeted on arrival by familiar faces and friendly new ones. A tartan piper welcomed the guests to a good Scottish dinner and afterwards we joined in the ceilidh. The dancing was very energetic but we lasted the pace! The evening ended with Auld Lang Syne at midnight.

The next morning, we attended the Area Meeting. It was interesting to learn about various activities organised for members - and some of the issues they experience in Scotland due to the vast distances involved. On Saturday afternoon guests explored Pitlochry before High Tea in the hotel. We then boarded coaches to Pitlochry Festival Theatre for a performance of

‘A Christmas Carol’ with live music, traditional carols, and some ghostly goings on. We returned to the hotel for supper and another ceilidh.

Come Sunday morning, we were up early to say our goodbyes. We had enjoyed an excellent weekend. Everyone had greeted us with such warmth and we were looked after very well. Thank you to Norrie Dudgeon and his committee for all the wonderful organisation. If you have the chance to attend a future Scottish Gathering, we can highly recommend it.

When the Ancient Order of Foresters was founded in 1834 membership was only open to men over the age of 18. Senior Court members soon began to set up separate local societies for younger people unable to join the Order. Usually called Juvenile Foresters’ Societies or Family Burial Societies, these societies admitted children whether their parents were Foresters or not. The first record of a Foresters-related ‘Juvenile Society’ dates from 1847 but the idea likely began around 1840.

Initially there was some opposition to younger Foresters. One early High Chief Ranger stated that the Order was ‘for men, not boys’! By 1867 though these societies had a combined membership of over 56,000. At that year’s High Court, it was agreed that they should be officially recognised as Foresters. The ‘Juvenile Foresters’ Societies’ were given the dispensation number of the adult Courts they were associated with.

The 1875 Friendly Societies Act stated that Juvenile societies could only keep members until the age of 16. When members had to leave, many didn’t earn enough money to join an adult Foresters Court. Parents would look elsewhere for their children’s insurance. In the 1880s around 9,000 new members joined Foresters each year. This figure was much lower than the estimated 92,000 children born annually to existing members. The Order was missing tens of thousands of potential members.

At the 1883 High Court a committee was set up to investigate the matter. Their report found there were 1,037 Juvenile societies, with 58,777 members. Besides trading on connections to Forestry, they were significant ‘feeders’ to the Order’s adult Courts. The report suggested forming a Federation of Juvenile Societies to provide support and keep better member statistics. A Federation could also lobby the Government to revise the law, so that Juvenile societies could keep members for longer and adult Courts could accept infants.

The Federation’s rules and aims, along with a Juvenile Societies Directory, were accepted during the 1885 High Court, chaired by High Chief Ranger T. B. Stead. E. B. Shawcross was appointed as the Federation’s permanent Secretary with the High Chief Ranger playing a role on the committee. The proposed motto ‘Juvenilis est Potentia’ was rejected in favour of its plain English equivalent, ‘In Youth is

Power’. By 1888 Juvenile Societies occupied 66 pages in the Foresters’ Directory. There were 72,377 members in 1,248 societies, of which 385 had joined the Federation.

On 1 January 1896, the Bill to Amend the Friendly Societies Act abolished the distinction between Adult and Juvenile societies. Courts could now accept members aged from one year old. As a result, another class of juvenile Foresters was created. These ‘Probationary Members’ paid lower contributions for temporary benefits up to the age of 16 or 18. Meanwhile ‘Junior Members’ paid higher contributions for permanent benefits.

By December 1945, there were 186,318 ‘Juveniles’ associated with the Ancient Order of Foresters. They comprised: -

7,759 members in 8 Juvenile Courts

41,321 members in 836 adult Courts with Junior sections

115,900 members in another 257 Registered Societies

21,138 members in another 309 Unregistered Societies

These figures were for the UK alone, never mind the many overseas groups with Foresters connections. Yet after the Second World War, the imminent arrival of the Welfare State reduced the appetite for child insurance. Foresters faced an inevitable decline in Juvenile membership.

At High Court in 1945 it was agreed that all the Foresters-related societies should become Junior sections of existing Courts or new Juvenile Courts. The Juvenile Courts encouraged members to engage with Forestry through a range of social activities. A Holiday Fund allowed young Foresters to enjoy parties, concerts, trips to the coast and countryside, and many other activities. Many current Foresters no doubt have fond memories of them.

Juvenile MiscellanyIn July 1929, Miscellany began a ‘With the Juveniles’ section detailing Courts’ Juvenile Member activities. October saw an added column called ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’. Aimed at a junior readership, it was penned by ‘Uncle Jack’ and often contained a little poetry alongside suitably educational and morally improving text. The outbreak of the Second World War caused a short hiatus until November 1939 saw Miscellany’s centre pages become the ‘Juvenile Miscellany’. The pages were detachable so parents could give copies to their children, many of whom had been evacuated from home. The pull-out continued with added articles throughout the war. ‘Under the Greenwood Tree’ often included useful advice for young wartime gardeners.

At the end of November Court Princess Alexandra 4163 enjoyed an afternoon at the Brick Lane Music Hall. Members had a three-course lunch while watching the show Vincent’s Jingle Bell Christmas.

Congratulations to Sandra Scotting, Secretary of Court Industry of Cobden 1752 who received an MBE in December for services to the local community. Sandra is seen here with her son Simon and husband Lee. She writes; ‘I was presented the award by Prince William, who was lovely and spoke to all of us.’

Barney O’Connell, a member of Court Duke of Argyle 2630, recently spent a day at the London Hilton hotel working with chef Cyrus Todiwala. Barney is a Sous Chef at the ICE Cafe restaurant in Rougham, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Barney’s father Kevin writes, ‘Back in 2010, Barney was supported by the Foresters Educational Awards while training to become a chef at the West Suffolk College. The course was for three years and upon completion Barney has gone from strength to strength. He now teaches classes at the ICE Cook School as well as cooking for visiting customers in the restaurant. It is wonderful to see a success story come from support initiated by the Foresters Educational Awards scheme, and Barney is extremely grateful for the Society’s help.’

November saw members of Court Duke of Argyle 2630 out and about; ‘Members, family and friends enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Hunters Meet restaurant. The raffle raised funds in support of the Chief Ranger’s charity Diabetes UK.’

Foresters on footOn 2 October, Foresters and friends stretched their legs for an interesting South London Area guided walk. Led by Christine Jarvis-Norse, Past Chief Ranger of Court Wellington 3449, the theme was ‘Royalty Meets the Establishment’. The weather stayed fair and there was plenty to see, from famous grand buildings to an unusual grave for a dog!

Court Wellington 3449 sponsor the tracksuits of Carshalton Athletic FC Under 13s. On 20 October, members watched the Under 13s play for the first time on the club’s full-sized pitch. While there, the Court raised money for the High Chief Ranger’s charity Rays of Sunshine. They proved lucky mascots as Carshalton won 4-0. A week later, the Foresters pitch side banner appeared on national television when highlights of Carshalton Athletic’s FA Cup First Round game were included on Match of the Day.

Voice...

To all Foresters, I write to thank the Society for their continued support of Grays Athletic Football Club. Any financial sum given to a community grassroots club is vitally important. The benefits of football are immense, in youth and in entering the adult world of work and responsibilities. Our Youth teams in 2019/20 cover 5 to 18-year olds. Your support enables us to continue helping young impressionable minds stay fit, healthy and safe, away from the many negative perils within society. I would like to thank all your Court members, who have warmly welcomed us and been very supportive to our ideas and aims. We are grateful for your tireless work and enthusiasm. My Committee looks forward to building even stronger ties with Foresters in 2020. We hope we can enlist even more members to join the Society, so they too can enjoy the many benefits Foresters has to offer. On behalf of myself as the Chair, my fellow Youth Committee members, all the players, parents, and supporters - thank you.

Kind regards,Slok Singh

In November members and friends racked their brains for the National Quiz in aid of the High Chief Ranger’s charity appeal. Past High Chief Ranger Glyn Carpenter set the questions and reveals the results: ‘Thirty-five teams across seven Areas took part. Court St Leonards 2350 of the Southern Home Counties Area triumphed by the narrowest margin, winning on the tiebreak from South London’s finest. The event raised £1,400 for Rays of Sunshine. Court St Leonards generously also donated their winnings to the cause. Thanks to all the local organisers and quizmasters and to everyone who took part.’ (Congratulations to the winning team and many thanks Glyn for an enjoyable event – Ed.)

Tiebreak question: General Sherman, a California Sequoia, is the largest tree in the world. It is over 100ft in circumference at the base and stands 275 feet tall. How much is it estimated to weigh in kilos? (Answer in the Just for Fun pages)

Foresters Brass Christmas ConcertOn 7 December the Southern Home Counties Area hosted a Christmas Concert featuring Foresters Brass. Past High Chief Ranger and Area Co-ordinator Linda Levett reports; ‘This year’s event was held in Thakeham Village Hall. Unbeknown to us, the Band’s conductor had left two weeks before the concert. Thankfully former Band member George Newbould stepped in. George really rose to the challenge and the Band were amazing.

The audience included members of the public, High Chief Ranger Michael Charlton-Hubble and Foresters from the Southern Home Counties, Hants and Sussex, South London and North London Areas. We all enjoyed listening to Foresters Brass and singing Christmas carols. One of the highlights was the Twelve Days of Christmas. The audience were divided into groups and had to stand up to sing their section - as the music sped up, we were up and down like yoyos!

During the interval, the Area Committee served refreshments. While the audience drank tea and munched mince pies, they wandered around various stalls selling Christmas cards and gifts for the High Chief Ranger’s charity Rays of Sunshine. As there were more than three Foresters present, we held a raffle too! All money raised went towards the High Chief Ranger’s charity.

The winners were as follows:

£200 1st PrizeCourt 6088 Sir Robert Peel (ticket 1693)

£100 2nd Prize John Modrate (ticket 2604)

£50 3rd Prize Court Eye of Providence 1112 (ticket 0461)

China trekLast October, Dave and Angela Fosbrook from Court Unity 4893 took part in a six-day sponsored walk along the Great Wall of China. Their chosen charity was the Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice at Moggerhanger, Bedfordshire. Dave and Angela raised over £3,800, including generous donations from fellow Foresters. Here is a summary of their trip:

‘On 4 October a group of 28 of us, from Guernsey to Yorkshire, left Heathrow Airport. Everyone’s aim was to raise as much money as possible for their chosen charity. We chose Sue Ryder as hospices, which rely totally on charitable donations, are dear to our hearts. We paid all the costs for our trek, so all money raised would go entirely to the charity.

At Beijing Airport, we met our guide. A two-hour coach ride took us to our first overnight stop at Huangyaguan. Next morning, after a breakfast of porridge and fried egg, we made our packed lunch of cheese and jam sandwiches. This menu was repeated every day for the whole trip.

The first walk took us uphill for an hour and a half to a restored part of the wall. There was a mix of uneven steps of varying height and depth before we continued to our basic accommodation. Over the next five days we walked on and off the wall, across fluctuating terrain, up and down some very steep sections in various states of repair. We slept in a range of homesteads, including one with rice pillows which felt like they were stuffed with shingle!

We carried our day’s necessities (including lunches) on our backs. The weather was very kind. We enjoyed some stunning views, with the wall winding into the distance. At the end of each day we looked forward to a welcome beer, followed by a shower and a local meal. Our last day’s walk culminated with glasses of champagne. We raised a toast to the wall and everyone who had taken part.

We loved every minute of this experience; meeting new people, seeing a new country, the stunning scenery. Donations came from family, friends, clubs and groups we belong to - including Foresters. In total we raised £3840.41, a fantastic amount. We are still open to further donations and will pass them on to St John’s. We would like to thank everyone who helped us to make this such a worthwhile adventure!’

Congratulations Rachel on your appointment as the Society’s new Chief Executive. To start, how would you describe yourself?

People often comment that I have ‘joie de vivre’. I thrive off the energy of having people around me. I am focussed and passionate about completing tasks to the best of my ability, but I try and keep an element of fun in things as well.

What is your business background?

I qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2005. Ten years later I became a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. I spent thirteen years in large accountancy firms, mainly working on audits for financial services companies, but also stock exchange listings and restructures. I joined Foresters in January 2015 as Head of Finance, then re-joined as Finance Director in September 2017.

Why did you become involved with Foresters?

My first link with Foresters was in 2006 when I worked on the Society’s external audit. Like a lot of young people, I hadn’t heard of a Friendly Society before and didn’t know what these organisations did or stood for. But the more I found out about Foresters the more I liked, especially the social and benevolent aspects. Foresters quickly became my favourite client.

What are your interests outside of the Society?

Being a mum and a Chief Executive, I don’t have much spare time! I really enjoy outings with my two children and the memories that we share. Having lost my father recently, these family moments are more precious than ever. My daughter is a budding actress and we both love the theatre. After we went to see Les Miserables she said to me ‘that will be me one day mummy’ - and I believe she is right!

As Chief Executive, what aims do you have for the Society during 2020?

Erik Vynckier outlined the challenges we face in his Miscellany interview (Autumn 2019 / issue 1631 – Ed.); streamlining products, reducing costs, and improving our operations. We made good progress under his leadership and I will

be continuing this work. As part of a restructure we made redundancies in 2019. I understand this is upsetting, for the people involved and their families and friends. But these were necessary business decisions to sustain the Society’s future viability.

You have mentioned the Society’s new strategy, can you tell us more about it?

We must ensure every £1 we spend delivers returns for our members. In the restructure I have introduced some new roles to improve our operations. For example, an IT Manager will reduce the complexity of our IT environment. A new Data Analyst role will provide us with better insights into our day-to-day business and help us make smarter decisions faster.

Will you retain your other role as Finance Director?

For the foreseeable future, yes. Performing both roles will obviously be a challenge but I have daily support from a strong management team.

How do you see the future of Foresters?

The Society faces the challenge of scale. We must comply with the same laws and regulations as multi-billion-pound insurers. This creates infrastructure costs, and to break even requires selling a certain volume of new policies each year. On the insurance side, I believe the future will be bright if we can make our products more competitive and keep policy holders for longer. Doing this will also provide new Court members. The Courts are very financially secure. Their assets, around £100m, match some of the UK’s largest charities. Yet we spend over £3m a year in Court operating expenses to give out just over £1m of discretionary benefits. Reducing these operating costs and increasing the amounts we provide to members in their time of need is my vision for the future.

Yours fraternally, Rachel

METHOD

1 Lightly grease the tray with butter OR line it with the paper cases

2 Pour the milk and mini marshmallows into a glass bowl, over a pan of simmering water. Stir until the marshmallows have completely melted.

3 Pour the cereal into large plastic bowl and gradually add the melted marshmallow mixture. Combine well after each addition.

4 Spoon the mixture into the tray / cases. Softly push the mixture into the sides and make a small hollow in the middle of each cup.

5 Place in the fridge to set for up to 1 hour.

6 Once set, if you didn’t use paper cases, carefully use a spoon to remove the cakes from the tray.

7 Place mini chocolate eggs into the hollow of each cake (usually three eggs per cake).

8 Eat and enjoy! Why not try drizzling some melted chocolate over the cakes for an extra effect? Or decorate with some cute fluffy decorative chicks?

Our High Chief Ranger has directed our attention this year to a charity that provides those rays for children, and their parents, whose lives have been severely limited. As Foresters we have been delighted to help.

Another Forestric source of rays of sunshine is Miscellany! It is a collage of rays isn’t it, radiating from every area in the country. All those photos of social occasions, full of smiling faces (even if it rained) as we enjoyed each other’s company and the events and outings organised for us. Even pages that record the passing of our beloved fellow Foresters record the rays of sunshine that had shone through their lives.

When the new Foresters social site is set up there will be even more opportunities to access and create more gleams of hope and happiness. But some of our members are getting older and frailer. Some are unable to share in the active work of Forestry or go on these trips as they once did. Hopefully they have good memories of the many ‘rays of sunshine’ Forestry provided in their lives. Hopefully too they are still in contact and supported by the sources of those rays.

Does all this remind some of you of a children’s Sunday School hymn? The closing lines of Jesus Bids Us Shine say ‘So we must shine, / You in your small corner, / And I in mine.” Well why not? Let’s all create rays of sunshine whenever we can. Ones that will bring pleasure now and linger in the memory for ever.

MEMORIES

I am writing this on a dreary damp winter’s day when a ray of sunshine would be a welcome sight! Those of you who suffered the worst of this winter’s weather no doubt longed for the sun to return, whether a

glimpse or a more permanent spell of sunshine. As we are at the mercy of our climate, we sometimes have to look for our ‘rays of sunshine’ elsewhere.
