Concurso Cuento Breve 2009Promoviendo la creatividad y la lectura
En una divertida ceremonia realizada en el Teatro Británico, la Biblioteca Británica entregó los premios del concurso “Cuento Breve 2009” en donde más de 400 alumnos de los diferentes centros de enseñanza del BRITÁNICO escribieron historias fantásticas. Se presentaron cuentos sobre la amistad, las mascotas, el folklore, los chips de computadora con vida propia, entre otros, podemos afirmar que hubo un gran despliegue de imaginación en nuestros alumnos.
En total 23 niños y jóvenes finalistas fueron premiados con diversos presentes.
Los cuentos ganadores fueron: “Ciudad Potencia” escrito por Rodrigo Cano, estudiante del programa Kids del centro de Miraflores y “Dentro del folklore” escrito por Lucas Rivera, estudiante del programa Juniors del centro de San Borja. Ambos cuentos fueron interpretados por el grupo Trota Cuentos. El segundo puesto lo compartieron “La hormiga y el sapo” escrito por Arlette Muñoz, alumna del programa Kids del centro de Surco y “Siete vidas” escrito por Saulo Villafuerte, alumno del programa Juniors del centro de Pueblo Libre. Viaje a Gran Bretaña

This wonderful experience was like going through a wardrobe into another world. Indeed it was another world! It’s still amazing that I was living in Shakespeare’s country just a month ago. English people aren’t cold at all, but reserved and very polite (too much so, I guess). You could always hear “oh, sorry” or “it’s ok”, because they never kick up a fuss. I remember the first day of class (the classroom packed with Koreans!) but I also had classmates from Spain, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Ukraine. Let me tell you
that I got lost that day when coming back home; you can’t imagine how scared I was (but not desperate!). As I couldn’t ask for directions, because there was no one on the street(!), I decided to knock at any door to get some help. A young woman asked me in, she was really polite and friendly; in the end she drove me home herself. I visited as many places as I could, all of them I’d previously just seen in pictures. I also made lots of friends, my host family and the other students living with me in their house. Transport in London is so organised and almost perfect; I still remember taking the double-deckers and the Tube. I also went to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, it was pretty cool standing in the middle of the world. I visited lots of museums and bookshops, my favourites were the Natural History Museum and Waterstone’s bookshop. As for food, well I didn’t have much English food but the little I tried was delicious, but my favourite was Israeli food. Stonehenge, I went there too. Although the stones aren’t as huge as I thought, they were great! There are so many things to say, but I can’t write them all here, and I can say everything I learnt at the BRITÁNICO was really useful. Thank you, BRITÁNICO, for giving me this gift and thanks to all my teachers who encouraged me to achieve this goal and thanks to my “prophet” teacher, Flor Baglietto, who foretold it. Thank you very much.
• Una experiencia inolvidable Francesca FerreccioGanadora de la Beca a la Excelencia 2008-I
Definitivamente fue una experiencia que recordaré toda mi vida. Alejarme de casa y mi familia a los 16 años, viajar sola y por un mes hasta Londres, uno de los lugares que siempre soñé visitar… no es algo que muchas personas puedan contar. Todos me decían que este idioma me iba a servir en el futuro, y vaya que tuvieron razón. Gracias a este viaje he podido conocer a personas interesantes de diferentes partes del mundo y sus costumbres, viviendo todos en una sociedad muy diferente a la nuestra. También he podido conocer lugares impresionantes como Stonehenge, Greenwich, entre otros y, por supuesto, lo mejor fue poder practicar y perfeccionar mi inglés estudiando allá. Sólo me queda agradecer a Dios, a mis padres que me impulsaron a aprender inglés y, sobre todo, al BRITÁNICO que me brindó esta fabulosa oportunidad al otorgarme la beca, ya que así incentivan a los jóvenes a aprender este idioma tan necesario hoy en día.
VI Festival Cultural BritánicoEl sábado 28 de marzo se realizó el VI Festival Cultural Británico (FCB), en el centro de Surco. Con la asistencia de alrededor de 800 personas se llevaron a cabo 15 presentaciones, cada una de ellas, representando a nuestros diferentes centros de enseñanza. Se pudieron apreciar números de: magia, marinera, festejo, grupos de rock, huaylash, cantantes solistas, entre otros. La animación estuvo a cargo de profesores del centro de Miraflores, quienes hicieron participar al público. Como invitados especiales contamos con la presentación de Colectivo Circo Band. El premio a la mejor barra se lo llevó el centro de Pueblo Libre. Todos los asistentes gozaron de casi tres horas de MÚSICA, DANZA Y TEATRO. Los esperamos el próximo año para seguir disfrutando de este gran espectáculo y no olviden que puede ser su oportunidad de “demostrar su talento”.

Advice for FCE Candidates who will sit the exam in JuneIf you have registered to take the FCE Exam in June, there’s just enough time to prepare for it, so you should intensify your practice towards the exam now. The BRITÁNICO offers the best alternatives to do it:
• The SAC of your centre has a variety of reference books (Grammar for FCE, Vocabulary for FCE, Official Examination Papers, etc.), FCE Past Papers, CDs, CD-ROMs, graded readers, magazines, etc. If you have finished AD6 in April or will finish it in May, don’t worry because you have free use of the SAC until the FCE exam in June. This wonderful opportunity is only available to those BRITÁNICO students who have already registered for the June exam.

Graduación de “Jardineritos” con el apoyo del BRITÁNICOEn marzo se realizó la ceremonia de graduación de una promoción más de jóvenes jardineros del programa “Jardineritos”, que el BRITÁNICO auspicia desde el 2007.
El evento contó con la presencia de Cecilia Bentín de Cruchaga, Presidenta del Consejo Directivo del BRITÁNICO, Enrique Anderson, miembro del Consejo Directivo y Thomas Malcomson, Gerente General; así como Federico Trelles, Director Gerente Corporativo de Jardines de la Paz y Alejandro Vassilaqui, Director Ejecutivo de Cedro, entre otras personalidades.
El BRITÁNICO seguirá apostando por “Jardineritos”, programa que ya tiene más de siete años gracias a la iniciativa de The British Community Trust (BCT), quienes diseñaron el concepto y lo vienen trabajando en conjunto con Jardines de la Paz. Este proyecto se encarga de educar y capacitar a jóvenes de la casa hogar de Cedro, en labores de jardinería, con el objetivo de insertarlos en la sociedad y en el mercado laboral, ya sea en forma dependiente o independiente.
Con estas prácticas de responsabilidad social, el BRITÁNICO busca retribuir a la Comunidad, la confianza puesta a lo largo de los años.

Cambridge ICELT Award CeremonyOn 24 March, in a special ceremony, a group of thirteen BRITÁNICO teachers received the In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT) granted by the prestigious University of Cambridge. Entre pompones, matracas y gritos de entusiasmo se manifestó la barra de Clientes Externos por primera vez en el Festival Cultural que organiza cada año por nuestro Centro Cultural, con el objetivo de mostrar el talento de nuestros alumnos y profesores del BRITÁNICO.
El equipo rosado, conformado por docentes, personal administrativo y familiares, puso toda su energía en la barra, contagiando alegría y entusiasmo durante el evento, como se pueden observar en la foto. Finalmente, queremos agradecer a toda el área de Clientes Externos por su incondicional apoyo en la participación de este evento, y los animamos a tomar parte del próximo Festival 2010... ¡¡¡Ahí nos vemos!!!

The round-table session was moderated by Mrs Patricia Paz, our Head of Centre, and lasted an hour and a half.

William Shakespeare is considered one of the most influential writers in English literature. His birth is celebrated each year on April 23rd. Shakespeare’s legacy has impacted heavily on theatre and performance culture over the centuries and around the whole world. As an actor and a playwright, he performed and wrote some of the most famous comedies, tragedies and histories related to English society and poetry.

ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES
Con el entusiasmo de siempre y con propuestas originales, retomamos el programa Tiempo Libre en la modalidad de artes manuales dirigido a nuestros alumnos de Adultos, quienes una vez más participaron con gran expectativa y pusieron a prueba su capacidad creativa. El programa les ofrece un espacio para acceder a múltiples actividades de sencilla elaboración, pero de infinitas aplicaciones.
Este mes ofrecimos un taller de bisutería en el centro de San Isidro donde las participantes aprendieron a confeccionar un novedoso juego de collar y aretes a base de modernas pitas enceradas y cuentas de acrílico de diversos colores, logrando magníficas prendas.
En Pueblo Libre los alumnos realizaron un simpático porta celular de mesa trabajado con técnica mixta, pintaron las cajas de trupán creándoles diversos diseños, cosieron un colorido muñeco para después acoplarlos siendo del total agrado de los estudiantes.
En San Borja, confeccionaron un calidoscopio y se develaron muchas incógnitas, no sólo por su sencilla ejecución sino también usándolo como referencia, crearon interesantes diseños pintando y recortando papeles de distintos colores, fue toda una experiencia.
Cuando el programa ofrece un taller de repostería, la acogida es inmediata y esto pasó en Surco donde los asistentes prepararon un sabroso pie de guanábana. También estuvimos en Los Jardines y fue muy grato apreciar la inspiración que lograron los alumnos al trabajar con nuevos elementos, esta vez con hojas naturales que pintaron para crear un bello cuadro.
Así concluimos otro mes con muchas satisfacciones, pues los alumnos logran aprender diversas manualidades a las que les imprimen sus propios sellos y ello le agrega un mayor valor.

¿QUÉ PASA EN LOS CENTROS?

“The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas” (Linus Pauling) …and if you have them, why not share them? That’s why this April our senior and new teachers had a get-together to exchange their ideas and activities in a collaborative workshop called “How to deal with the Wordspot”. In a supportive atmosphere, our teachers could “teach” each other how they present the Wordspot section in the book, activities to recycle new phrases and even games!
Thanks to all Monterrico teachers for the enthusiasm shown in this meeting and the contributions made. We are sure that for all of them this was an enriching session with lots of new ideas to put into practice in future lessons.

Children running round the corridors, teenagers’ laughter and parents patiently waiting for them to leave their English lessons … these are some of the characteristics of the lively environment on a typical Saturday in Monterrico.
However on weekdays, a different story is told when a more relaxing and quiet atmosphere can be perceived on our premises because most of our students are adults with different reasons to study English. Some are housewives willing to learn a new language; others are university students who want to have more professional possibilities; still others are managers who are aware that English is an important asset.
Having such different settings is just a common feature in this branch and assisting our varied customers is only possible thanks to our well qualified teachers who show their versatility in adapting their teaching techniques to fit our students’ needs.
Finally, we’d like to say that our main concern is our students and satisfying their expectations, but this can only be achieved thanks to the invaluable contribution of all the staff who work in Monterrico.

Como parte de las celebraciones del “Día de la Amistad”, los alumnos del Británico de Monterrico disfrutaron de un entretenido karaoke organizado para fomentar la práctica del idioma de una manera divertida.
Contamos con la presencia de alumnos y profesores, quienes demostraron sus habilidades para el canto.
El entusiasmo con el que nuestros alumnos participan de nuestras diversas actividades nos motiva a seguir brindándoles lo mejor.
Por eso sólo nos queda decir: ¡¡¡Gracias totales!!!

Have you ever wondered what our students do to practise their English outside our classrooms?
Attending classes is perhaps the most common way of acquiring a language, but what else can be done to learn or internalise that language? Well, you will be surprised by the number of ways in which students can be exposed to English and their “own strategies” for learning it.

Door Contest en Monterrico!!! • Sheyla Ferreira y Yenifer Olivas
Cajeras/Recepcionistas
Febrero, mes del amor y la amistad fue motivo y tema principal para que nuestro centro de Monterrico organizara un Door Contest. Contamos con mucha acogida por parte de nuestros alumnos de diferentes niveles que se inscribieron y participaron muy entusiastas y plasmaron su creatividad e imaginación en las puertas de cada aula, utilizando el idioma inglés como herramienta al tema referido del concurso, el amor y la amistad. Para el jurado a cargo fue complicado escoger un solo ganador, ya que todas las puertas merecían ganar.

Great Expectations: Advanced two • Natalia O’Brien, Teacher
Having seen the great impact GREAT EXPECTATIONS had had on my students’ lives, I decided to go further and use it to exploit their acting skills. It was such a good feeling, seeing them working together, memorising their lines and talking about Pip and Stella as if they were their close friends. Once I even left the BRITÁNICO at night and saw them rehearsing, four students who come to classes at seven in the morning! They work, study and have lots of things to do, but they were so interested that they decided to put everything aside. You can imagine how proud and happy I felt of having them as my students. Obviously, the result was more than satisfying, each of them put a little bit of themselves into the characters: I saw a serious Pip, a funny one, and the last one was depressed thinking about Stella; one of them even sang. It wasn’t necessary to worry about the stage or the clothes, it was the motivation and enthusiasm they showed that gave them everything they needed to bring the characters into the classroom. What we learnt from this experience is that it doesn’t matter if life doesn’t meet our expectations, it’s always worth giving it a try. “’Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have
loved at all”. I wanted to thank my students for having reminded me of the strong influence we are on their lives; it’s the most cherished gift a teacher should have.
Ten Little Indians• Selma Sotomayor, Teacher
Last month our class of ‘Kids two’ gave a beautiful presentation with colourful feathers on their heads. They were 22 enthusiastic children trying to do their best acting as Indians with the typical “wuwuwuwu” sound. Each day of the previous week we had spent the last 10 minutes of the class rehearsing and sticking the feathers in the cardboard ribbons that they used on the main day. The objective of the activity was to work with numbers and make students use the language outside the class. Although only ten students came to the front, all of them sang loudly, as we did not use the original CD, because the lyrics were changed to “Ten little KIDS”. One girl introduced the act with a short monologue and a boy closed it with an Indian poem. All in all it was a rewarding experience for them, as well as for their parents who applauded a lot.
Verano en el BRITÁNICO de Monterrico• Shirley Aldave, Cajera/Recepcionista
Es enero, la temperatura asciende rápidamente. Padres e hijos conversan en la puerta sobre sus planes para todo el verano. Mientras los niños juegan en los muebles del lobby y corretean por la cafetería. El teléfono no deja de sonar; personas vienen por informes; las teclas de la computadora suenan sin cesar y el clic del mouse finaliza una matrícula más. Los alumnos nuevos reciben algunos obsequios, como el material promocional, lapiceros, blocs de notas y demás, mientras que otros están contentos por regresar a clases.
Este mes el BRITÁNICO está lleno, los chicos salen de vacaciones y no hay mejor idea que empezar el año estudiando inglés, ya que nos permite ingresar a un mundo globalizado y conectado. Es necesario que todos aprendan el idioma y qué mejor que en el BRITÁNICO, donde se encuentran diversas alternativas interesantes para estudiar inglés.
