While October usually means hitting our autumn stride, here’s hoping that the erratic sunshine of the previous months gives way to an extended Indian summer (you know, the one we were praying for all last season). The
catwalk seems to prophesy as much, with brighter autumn shades abounding - and if you don’t believe me, check out our October fashion shoot (p. 24); it channels all the vibrancy and vitality of an Indian spice market.
This month, we’ve discovered London: Portrait of a City, a unique coffee table tome that documents the capital’s remarkable history, architecture, landmarks, streets, style and - most importantly - swagger in hundreds of compelling photographs sourced from some of the world’s greatest archives (p17). And what better to accompany a coffee table book than a cup of Joe itself. Coffee is a big deal in this neck of the woods, so it’s about time we devoted a spread to the most fantastic roasteries in the area (p40). With such a wealth of boutique coffee shops dedicating themselves to the art of the unbeatable bean, vying for our custom on the strength of their aromatic blends and affable, well-trained baristas (the guys and girls who make milk-pouring an artform), it beats me how the corporate chains are still in business.
We’re as excited this month about all the new-season art exhibitions that have opened or are about to launch - not least the new Anish Kapoor show at the Lisson Gallery in Euston. Flick to page 12 to hear what Nicholas Logsdail, founder of the gallery and Kapoor’s early champion (not to mention friend), has to say about 30 years of working alongside Britain’s foremost living sculptor.
That’s brains taken care of - now time for some beautifi cation. Take a look at our Salon Select piece on page 36 for the full lowdown on the life-savers of the local beauty scene. We outline three ‘hero salons’ that are sure to be aces up your sleeve during the stylish autumn ahead.
Enjoy... and Happy Halloween!

Simon Martin’s UR Feeling looks to explore ‘the relationship between sensing and knowing’ through a series of fi lm screenings, performances and discussions. MATTHEW DARBYSHIRE4TH OCTOBER - 16TH DECEMBERThe work of emerging British artist Matthew Darbyshire is nothing if not intriguing, and his new show at the Zabludowicz Collection promises much food for thought. Running an esoteric gamut from vibrant, digitally-printed banners to maze-like installations that spill out of the gallery and onto the street, the centrepiece of the exhibition is arguably a series of reworkings of... wait for it... an old Atomic Kitten album cover. Prepare to be fl ummoxed.Zabludowicz Collection, 176 Prince of Wales Road, NW5 3PT

and complex journey,” the gallerist explains, “taking him to the top level of the most important international artists working today.”
Indeed, it’s hard to overstate the impact and infl uence of Kapoor’s work over the last three decades. His diverse explorations of form and space, matter and non-matter, have been acclaimed as much for their aesthetic inventiveness as for the intellectual ideas they refl ect or represent.
Through his manipulation of structure, colour and light, Kapoor invites us to recognise and re-evaluate the presence of ‘the void’, rendering visible – and often almost tangible – an abstract sense of ‘nothingness’ that is ineluctably fundamental to human experience.
Whether sending a huge block of red wax trundling through a pristine gallery, smearing doorframes as it goes (Svayambh, 2007), or challenging perspective in one of his beautiful mirror sculptures (like Cloud Gate, 2006, on permanent display in Chicago’s Millennium Park), Kapoor’s work is unafraid to engage with big, universal themes – and always elicits a powerful and instinctive emotional response.
The reward for his efforts has been great: prizes and plaudits too numerous to mention, a fortune said to run into the hundreds of millions and – not insignifi cantly – the love of the viewing public. In 2009, when the Royal Academy invited Kapoor to become the fi rst living artist to take over the entire gallery, the resulting show attracted 275,000 visitors – making it London’s most popular single-artist exhibition ever.
Now the stage is set for Kapoor’s fi rst London show since his Royal Academy success, and anticipation couldn’t be higher. Featuring all-new work created over the last year in earthy materials such as mud, cement and metallic pigments, the Lisson promises some surprises - including colour at ‘new levels of luminosity’. Preview images also suggest a new sense of intimacy and tenderness that both complements and challenges Kapoor’s most famous (and often monumental) past pieces.
The best way to fi nd out, however, is to experience it yourself - and the best advice is simply to expect evolution. After all, and as Kapoor himself has said, “I feel there’s everything to do yet.”

One evening in 1967, a young art school graduate missed his train home from Paddington. His name was Nicholas Logsdail, and it was a mundane mishap that would change his life.
Rather than wait at the station, Logsdail decided to take a walk. Within minutes, he was ambling along Marylebone’s Bell Street and stumbled across a derelict building that was being advertised for sale or rent, ‘no reasonable offer refused’.
Logsdail was part of a set of ambitious young creatives – including his friend, the polymath Derek Jarman – who had recently begun to stage exhibitions. But fi nding the right space to showcase work was diffi cult. So when Logsdail happened across the Bell Street premises, it seemed his prayers had been answered, not least because the site was so close to the station he used to commute to and from his childhood home in the country.
Later that year and thanks in no small part to a generous-spirited landlord, the Lisson Gallery opened. Such was its success that, a few years later, it had taken over several other buildings on the same street. And as the seventies came and went, the gallery’s reputation only grew.
The 1980s were just dawning when Logsdail saw some images of pigmented works created by a student at Chelsea College of Art. In his own words, he was ‘intrigued’, and ‘made a special visit’ to the artist’s graduation show. The student’s name was Anish Kapoor, and after seeing more of his work Logsdail’s glimmer of excitement became a glare.
“His work stood out,” Logsdail says today. “In it I recognised a convergence of modernism with a deep timelessness coming from his Indian origins.”
The gallerist was enthralled.“I was so impressed by that fi rst viewing,”
he says, “I ended up having an in-depth conversation with him about it. Following this, I made a visit to his studio and came to know him better.”
It was only a matter of time before the pair began to work together – a decision made all the more inexorable by the fact that the Lisson Gallery was already associated with many of the minimalist conceptual artists in whom the young Kapoor had an academic interest.
“We had started working with many other sculptors,” Logsdail tells me. “Tony Cragg, Richard Wentworth and Richard Deacon – who were later to be known as the New British Sculptors. So it felt like a natural move for this dynamic young artist – who was making such fresh and original forms of sculpture – to work with us… [It was] an exciting time for both the gallery and British sculpture as a whole.”
Born in Mumbai in 1954 to a Jewish Iraqi mother and Hindu Punjabi father, Anish Kapoor arrived in Britain in the mid-seventies following a brief sojourn in Israel. There he had lived on a kibbutz and made a short-lived attempt to study electrical engineering, but by 1973 he knew his future lay in art. As early as 1978, his instincts were proving accurate: his contribution to the New Sculpture exhibition at the Hayward Gallery got people talking and in 1982 (having met Logsdail) his work was shown alongside more established artists at the Lisson. In 1985, he had his fi rst solo exhibition at the gallery, and he has worked closely with Logsdail and the Lisson ever since.
“Anish’s development as an artist since that fi rst show has been a very interesting

As Samuel Johnson famously said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” Now that claim is verifi ed beautifully in a new book that
collects images of the city by some of the world’s greatest photographers, including Lord Snowdon, Linda McCartney and Juergen Teller.
London’s remarkable history, its architecture, its landmarks, streets, style, swagger - not to mention some of its stalwart inhabitants - are pictured in hundreds of compelling photographs sourced from a diverse array of archives
around the world. In these pages, London is presented as a vast and sprawling metropolis, constantly growing and evolving while the good humor, unique character and bulldog spirit of its people have stayed constant. This book salutes all those Londoners, their city and its history, and - in addition to the wealth of amazing images in the book (many of which are previously unpublished) - explores London’s history through hundreds of quotations, essays and references from popular culture.

My areaAnna BarnettThe International Sales Manager for House of Holland and avid food
blogger lets us in on her local secrets
What’s your favourite piece from the new House of Holland collection?I love the neon stripe party frocks, they’re so bold and out there but feminine at the same time, so proper statement pieces.
What’s the most expensive thing in your wardrobe? My Christopher Kane leather playsuit or maybe my Tibetan lambswool House of Holland jacket.
How would you describe your style?A touch of the crazy art teacher.
How do you accessorise?I wear a really scabby old ring that I’m sure was from H&M, it’s so old its tarnished and now looks like it’s rose gold… I think I prefer it this way! I also wear a Laura Lee ring and a Vanessa Harrington typewriter key necklace with my initial. I love vintage costume jewellery, mainly big sparkly earrings. I just got bought a 60s style necklace and matching earrings; I love a full set.
Where do you like to go for breakfast? The Pavilion in Victoria park because it’s by the water (you can even get about on the man-made lake), is so peaceful and I can take the dog. They also do the best veggie breakfast. I’m not even veggie, it’s that good and everything is organic.
Where is home for you?London Fields Hackney; it’s been nine years.
What’s the most memorable meal you’ve had in your local area?Recently I’d say The Cat and Mutton; they’ve been doing
Indian food! There’s also a now-legendary Lucky Chip serving up heavenly burgers and Off Broadway does the most amazing pork tacos. The options are endless…
What’s your favourite thing to cook?I love cooking so many things but a roast dinner is probably the most satisfying, because you can make sure you properly nail it and include all your favourite things: cheesy leeks, Yorkshire puddings - making sure they’re a bit gooey but still huge - super crispy but fluffy roast potatoes, loads of veg, meat cooked just how you like it and then the best gravy. The gravy is probably the most important part.
What’s your local? The Cat & Mutton, I’ve spent a lot of time in there over the years so attempting to spend less there now. The Spurstow Arms pub is closer to home and lovely.
What’s playing on your Ipod right now?SBTRKT and Chapel Club.
Describe your perfect weekend…I’d go for a long walk and breakfast with the dog in Victoria park, sit by the water, read the papers, then I’d get myself down to the Dalston car boot fair - I’ve found so many great bargains of late. I’d probably then cook all afternoon, have friends drop by, maybe have a dinner party. I tend to nip down to the Sunday flower market on Columbia Road topped off with a few glasses of red in the Royal Oak. All the simple things!

pan fried cod on spicy bubble and squeak with a salsa verde. It’s so good I’ve had it three times in the last month or so.
What do you love about living there?I’ve managed to end up living at what feels like a country retreat in Hackney, with a dog and an Aga… it’s the dream! My friends are all close by, we have the London Fields lido, the canal, Victoria park, loads of amazing places to eat and drink and you can walk or cycle everywhere.
Where do you buy your groceries? The corner shop on Broadway Market always have a massive selection of fresh vegetables
and herbs and they always taste exactly how they should. I’m not into supermarket shopping one bit. Fin and Flounder fishmongers is great. The food stalls and markets at the weekend (including Netil Market and the farmer’s market in the school yard) are the best bits about the area. I’m currently obsessed with the fresh pasta, as well as the Thai, Caribbean and

We’ll see you two weeks later to make sure you’re happy with the results and, if needed, we’ll fi ne-tune them by giving you a top-up treatment.
Who should carry out Botox?Botox is a prescribed medicine, so you’ll meet one of our aesthetic doctors for a full skin consultation. If you decide together that it’s the right treatment for you, they’ll prescribe it. Botox injections should only be given by a qualifi ed doctor with relevant training – at our clinic they are always carried out by one of our aesthetic doctors. Ideally, you should choose someone registered with regulatory body, the British College of Aesthetic Medicine. All our aesthetic doctors and nurses are registered.
What are the alternatives? While Botox is effective and safe, there are alternatives, such as: • Dermal fi llers, which are injected into the skin to plump it up and smooth lines; • Dermaroller, a micro skin-needling treatment that triggers the body into regenerating collagen and elastin, making it perfect for treating scarring, facial and décolleté lines and overall skin rejuvenation; and • Medical Facials, which give a temporary result by plumping up the skin to soften lines, making them appear reduced.
We’ll talk you through your choices at the consultation to help you fi nd the right treatment for you. Whatever you decide, we’ll always take a gentle approach to leave you with wrinkle-free skin that makes you feel great.
I ,f like many people, you believe that Botox can only achieve results by freezing your natural facial expressions, it’s time to think again. Dr Mica Engel, one of Waterhouse Young’s cosmetic
doctors, unravels the myths about Botox and shares her secret to a fresh, wrinkle-free appearance without frozen features.
What’s Botox used for?Botox is used to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, ‘bunny’ lines on the nose, smile lines and to tighten the skin around the neck and jowls. It’s also become popular for treating excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, feet and forehead, and teeth grinding (which can cause headaches and damage to teeth).
Does Botox still have a stigma?People used to think that if you’d had Botox it gave you status. Now it’s an everyday treatment. The stigma surrounding it is far less than it used to be, and with a conservative approach no one need ever know you’ve had it done.
How can I look fresh, not frozen? When you smile or frown the muscles in your face contract, causing lines and wrinkles. Over time these lines become permanent. Botox works by relaxing the muscle, but too much can stop all movement, which gives a frozen look. We prefer to subtly enhance your features, rather than give you a stiff, unnatural look, so we take a conservative approach. We start by injecting very small amounts into precise points in the muscle thus softening wrinkles but keeping some muscle movement.
The Waterhouse Young Clinic’s gentle approach to wrinkle-free skin

WRINKLE-BUSTING OFFER
BOTOX MYTH BUSTERS1. Botox freezes your facial expressionsYou can choose to have a more frozen look, but it’s not necessary. By injecting small, precise amounts we can soften the lines, but keep movement around the eye area, so you’ll still have your facial expressions.
2. Botox is toxicBotox is a purifi ed form of Botulinum toxin. The concentration of the toxin is very low and when it’s injected in pinpoint amounts it won’t spread to other areas of the body, making it a safe treatment.
3. Botox is painfulMost people only feel a mild, stinging sensation, however, some fi nd the treatment uncomfortable. Mica has a lot of experience and skill with Botox injections and many clients comment on her soft touch. In addition, the Waterhouse Young clinic use a revolutionary new technique to numb the area and minimise any discomfort. The treatment is over before you know it.

The art ofstaying beautiful...
“The Beauty Centre in St John’s Wood offers a modern, clean and tranquil environment for a myriad of beauty treatments. Straight off a long-haul fl ight, I couldn’t wait to rehydrate my skin with their ‘Prescriptive Facial’. Using Dermalogica products (known for their outstanding results on all skin types) my incredibly knowledgeable therapist, Valerie, schooled me throughout the treatment. Starting with deep exfoliation and toning, a steamer was placed above my head, which gently moistened my face and drew out impurities. Valerie then carefully squeezed all of my blocked pores (how satisfying that this is allowed), following up with a serum treatment and a face, head and neck massage. I’m happy to report that my resultant ‘facial glow’ stayed for the rest of the week. Ten days later and not a single out-break. Defi nitely the perfect post-holiday pick-me-up.” Gretel Leethe-beautycentre.com, 130 Allitsen Road, St John’s Wood, NW8 7AU, 020 7722 6603

It aims to get you doing various physical activities that require diverse muscle use and a combination of skill sets. Popularised by the military, you develop strength, agility, speed and endurance: a basic routine might include a 400m jog or run, deadlifts, push-ups, ring dips and pull-ups. 60-minute beginner sessions run throughout the week and the beginner’s syllabus needs to be completed before you can graduate to main or foundation classes.crossfi tevolving.com, 303 Holloway Road, N7 8HS

FOR THE ULTIMATE PAMPER SESSIONASK FOR Nothing! It’s all taken care of.WHERE 3Thirty Hair and Beauty Salon, 330 Old Street, EC1V 9DR, 020 7033 1882 THE LOWDOWN Tiff J opened this Shoreditch salon in 2009 and has since expanded its services. With experienced hair stylists on hand to make sure your ‘do’ is looking its best, and trained beauticians ready to preen you to perfection, the salon doesn’t specialise in a specific hair type but can cater for European, Asian and Afro hair alike (quite a rarity). One of the salon’s newest additions is the ‘Ultimate Pamper Package’ for girls on the go, lasting no longer than two hours. All the necessary areas are seen to- eyebrow threading, an eyelash tint (mascara not needed - yay), the dreaded bikini wax, a speedy shape and polish of the nails plus a rejuvenating facial.PLUS POINTS At just £50, this is possibly the best beauty deal I’ve come across this side of town - and the extensive selection of OPI nail varnishes (only the best) was duly noted. FOR A DAPPER DAN SPRUCE-UPASK FOR A trim plus a traditional hot towel and wet shaveWHERE 340 Old Street, EC1V 9DS, 020 3393 7946 THE LOWDOWN This cutting-edge Shoreditch barber shop is top of its class, and its traditionalist chic approach must go some way to explaining the company’s rapid growth - it has sister shops in Covent Garden, Soho and Mayfair. The shelves are lined with an impressive array of sleek own-brand products and gifts (we’re fans of the limited edition ‘Ernest’ safety razors in Great British colours). Murdock represents all that’s great about grooming, culture and style for the modern gent - and my cut was the envy of all my man friends.PLUS POINTS Not only is the website packed with handy tips on hair styling and grooming, there’s also a loyalty card offering in-store and online discounts at Murdock as well as local partner stores. Full service starts at £80 - see murdocklondon.com for individual prices. DA
FOR HAIR LIKE THE CELEBSASK FOR Balayage or the dip dye effectWHERE Gielly Green Hair & Beauty, 42-44 George Street, W1U 7ES, 020 7034 3060THE LOWDOWN Founders and Creative Directors Fred Gielly and Shai Greenburg have been turning out superbly styled London barnets for the last 18 years. Shai was to overhaul my tired ‘floating lights’, revamping my look with some Drew Barrymore inspired dip-dying. For those of you who may not know what that is (where have you been?), it refers to the rather on-trend method of dying part of the hair in stark contrast to the other to achieve a two-tone effect. Good examples are Jessie J’s recent raven mane with bright purple ends or Alexa Chung’s darker roots set off by a dirty blonde trim. Shai specialises in bringing out clients’ natural beauty, working with the hair texture and face shape to find a style that suits - and as such suggests I avoid the ‘full grunge’ of Drew, which he thinks would prove too harsh for my skin-type. We opt instead for a more Californian Rachel Bilson vibe. As if to temper my initial disappointment at not undergoing a complete transformation, Shai qualifies his decision by adding that you can always add a darker toner-colour to roots later, but you don’t want to apply too much bleach which then can’t be darkened. Et voilà, he’s spot on. I absolutely love my more subtly bleached tips, which - though they don’t take long - completely lift my locks. It also allows for variance between looks; I can enjoy this for a couple of months and then inch closer to that starker look - maybe by Christmas I can go the whole hog and attempt some festive-looking red ends or bangs.
PLUS POINTS Not only is the salon super chic, all sleek lines, dark woods and mirrors - as befits its classy location on Marylebone’s lovely George Street - the reclining chairs at the wash basins are ridiculously padded and comfy. No crooked necks in this salon - just horizontal, sleep-inducing ‘beds’. Add to that an Indian head massage and a scrumptious-smelling vegetable oil hair treatment and you’ve a recipe for pure salon bliss.Full head colour with a senior colourist starts at £200, giellygreen.co.uk HB

Sculpt Your Body Slim in Six Weeks Louise Parker and her dedicated team are ready to bust your body into shape for spring

sensible, researched and proven to work. But what we do is put it all together to create massive transformations in our clients’ bodies and lifestyles.
“My team are world class and without doubt some of the best in the country. Most come from a Sports Science background and we have two Olympic athletes amongst us. We all share a friendly, no-nonsense approach and between us we offer an unrivalled service to our clients. I’m hugely proud to have such a talented and committed team behind me.”
Louise Parker believes anyone can have
a fantastic body – regardless of age, body type and starting point: “By following my method, you really will be blown away by how you can change your body shape, overall fitness and exceed your own expectations.”
Her programme is suitable for anyone wanting exceptional results, in record time. The Intensive is hugely popular with clients needing to be what she calls ‘red-carpet ready’ – whether that’s for a wedding, new job-role or even the school run. “I love helping post-natal mums,” she explains. “Since I had my daughters in quick
T HE INTENSIVE PERSONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME was devised by celebrity trainer Louise Parker over 12 years ago and has since changed the body shape
of hundreds of individuals. Her experience ranges from helping clients recover from long-term obesity, to taking care of some of the most beautiful bodies in the world.
The unique programme combines six hours a week of her exercise method, alongside a rigorous dietary overhaul, for a six-week period. “Each week we train you in four 90-minute sessions in the comfort of your own home – bringing the gym to you and saving precious time,” says Louise. “Some clients choose to do three 90-minute sessions over an eight-week period and the results are still exceptional.”
The Intensive employs exercise and diet methods that radically shift body fat and totally re-sculpt the body, without compromising metabolism. “It’s so important to teach our clients how to boost their metabolism so that once they have lost the weight they can easily keep it off,” she notes. “So many diets will get the weight off but your metabolism will come to a grinding halt or they are just not sustainable.” The programme’s emphasis on resistance work and an intelligent eating plan ensure the results that clients achieve are long lasting and, most of all, easy to maintain. “No aspect of what we do is extreme,” she explains. “Every element of the plan is
succession, I fully understand the challenges new mothers are faced with, and what has to be done to return you to your former glory.”
Louise Parker designs each programme with one of her team before the programme commences, based on the individual’s requirements and deadlines. A rigid, yet balanced food plan is devised, ensuring optimal results. Louise personally monitors your diet diary on a daily basis to ensure you are on the right track and that you get all the support and motivation you need to succeed. In six weeks, you will emerge looking better than you thought you ever
could. What Louise Parker does isn’t gimmicky, it is instead an intelligent combination of three factors – nutrition, training and lifestyle – delivered in just the right combination. “Providing you have made the decision to change and are willing to let us guide you,” she asserts, “You simply cannot fail –
clients routinely drop two dress sizes on the Intensive.”
There are many bespoke programmes available, and following a telephone consultation, Louise will advise a suitable programme and schedule to suit any objective, lifestyle and budget. Louise asks that new clients commit to a minimum of three hours per week to ensure that they achieve amazing results.

Occupying an acute-angle plot in the narrow Marylebone Lane just north of Wigmore Street is 28-50 Wine Workshop and Kitchen. The establishment’s dual specialisms
are as apparent in its decor as in its name, with a relaxed French bistro ambiance and intimate seating backgrounded by Chateaux wine cases stacked ceiling-high. A mid-week visit was surprisingly vibrant and we were greeted warmly by manager Ed and sommelier Sébastien, who was to advise us on wine for each of our dishes. Our waitress, Sabrina, was friendly and helpful in accommodating food allergies without fuss.
The restaurant boasts a good selection of salads including several vegetarian options; we chose smoked Severn and Wye salmon on rye and aubergine with grilled courgettes, marinated peppers and goats curd for starters, though salt beef brisket and a charcuterie selection were among the meatier dishes available. The mains on offer include various grills and sharing plates as well as a host of meat, fi sh and veggie dishes. We ordered both the grey mullet and the sea bream with a variety of steamed veg to accompany. Desserts were diffi cult to choose, especially with a masterful-looking creme
brulee and an inviting lemon tart available, but in the end we opted for an almond and cherry cake and a fruit salad dominated by red berries. The meal was excellent, the dishes uniformly delicate in fl avour and served and dressed with ingenuity. But the food is by no means the whole story - the wine plays an equally important role. Suffi ce it to say that 28-50 is not the kind of place to simply order a bottle.
Specially chosen French classics are supported by less familiar wines in a
comprehensive list that includes both European and extra-European varieties. The tone was set by a fruity Austrian Kamptaler white wine from the
Gruner Veltliner grape typical of the Heuriger (wine bars) of Vienna, while a Tokaji dry Hungarian white accompanied the starters.
During our visit, many of the clientele appeared well-acquainted with the restaurant’s management and staff, and there was a convivial ‘club’ atmosphere that helped to make 28-50 more than an everyday dining experience. The combination of great food, superb wine and attention to customer care proved irresistible. We’ll be back! IDB2850.co.uk, 15-17 Marylebone Lane, W1U 2NE, 020 7486 7922
RESTAURANTREVIEWS
Islington watering-hole XOXO has expanded its horizons and added food to its repertoire. The bar is situated on thriving Upper street among a host of long-established competitor eateries, so the move is a bold one; fortunately, the new menu hits all the right targets (and then some).
Specialising in Thai cuisine, the food is reasonably priced, with mains starting at £7.50 - leaving you a little extra change to indulge (and you must) in the exclusive cocktails. Drinks are where XOXO earned their stripes, and you won’t be disappointed.
In addition to an artfully streamlined ‘regular’ menu, the bar also offers a dim-sum lunch menu that’s perfect for quickly satisfying midday cravings - though once you sit down, you might not want to leave. The interior is stylish and sleek - all fi ne lines, low lighting and muted colours. It’s a relaxing environment that allows the food and drink do the talking.
We arrived at the bar to a warm greeting from the staff before being whisked to our table. When our bubbly waitress bounded over to take our drink order, we plumped for an XOXO Mojito overfl owing with Frangelico and champagne as well as an extravagant Rubies and Diamonds, a delectable melange of Tanqueray gin, Chambord and raspberries: showstoppers, both. But the food was no afterthought.
After careful deliberation we decided to start with a sharing platter to soak up some of the alcohol. The calamari deserves a special mention - it was super fresh, perfectly cooked, lightly battered with a subtle citrus tang. For our mains, we shared sauteed pak choy plus a portion of jasmine rice and chose lamb massaman curry (divine) and prawn chu chi (a lime-y red curry) to accompany them.
The food was a credit to the team at XOXO, who seem to have nailed the new aspect of the business without encountering any of the obvious teething troubles you might expect. That said, we can’t forget the real stars of the show: the cocktails. With so many available (and all of them so alluring), be sure to drink them before, during and long after your meal.Romy van den Broekexoxolondon.co, 74 Upper Street, N1 0NY,020 7226 6799

This restaurant primarily uses French cooking techniques but mixes in international culinary flavours from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Capitalising on their extensive knowledge and unfaltering creativity, the chefs frequently change the dishes on the menu to ensure seasonal variety. When should you go? Equation is conveniently located on Upper Street - hit the restaurant on Saturdays or Sundays from noon to 3pm or grab a delicious dinner Tuesday to Saturday between 5.30pm and 10.30pm. Why should you go? For the signature cocktails (curry vodka and black pepper rum being one daring example) which are masterfully created to (quite literally) knock your socks off.

This is where the Absolutely gang go to sup Manhattan-quality cocktails and eat vast quantities of Mexican grub. When should you go? Off Broadway is right in the thick of it on Broadway Market, so go early - a table outside is like gold dust, especially towards the latter half of the week, when the locals start to get withdrawal symptoms and return for a pre-weekend, late afternoon tipple or nightcap. When the Saturday street market moves in, there’s even a taco stand outside. Why should you go? The cocktails are yum, but the real draw is the promise of authentic Mexican street food. THE RESTAURANT: Whether it’s within the cosy dining room that you choose to eat your breakfast, lunch or supper, or out on the decking that overlooks the narrow paths that sweep down to the pretty village below, the Gwineas restaurant serves up fi sh caught by the Llawnroc’s very own fi sherman that very morning. Expect exquisite Gorran Haven lobster, clams and scallops, Mevagissey cod, Cornish duck and crab, all usually served alongside generous portions of sumptuous Helford Blue Cheese. The Mevagissey Rattler battered cod, which comes with crushed peas and homemade tartar sauce,
is our pick. At the bar, Cornish ales take centre stage; just metres away from the Cornish coast and water, it’s the perfect tipple to help wash down a hearty meal.
TO DO: There’s no on-site spa, but Roc Solid Breaks, exclusive to the hotel, provides the perfect alternative. Choose from adventures including the ‘Roc-ey Waters’ package, which includes surf lessons, ‘Roc-ing Horse’, which sees guests riding on nearby beaches with various local guides, or ‘Roc the Baby’ for those with a brood in-tow. Alternatively, relax in the Llawnroc’s cosy library, where a plethora of books line the walls on stacked shelves.

UK GETAWAY
THE HOTEL: The south of Cornwall is known for its prevalence of unspoiled coves, quaint fi shing boats, sandy shores and calm, lapping emerald waters. The chocolate-box fi shing village of Gorran Haven, which sits at the eastern-most point of the Roseland Peninsula, is no different. Expect the requisite Cornish minute village parishes, fi shing port and semi-dilapidated white-washed cottages, from whence the Llawnroc Hotel, which opened last year to great acclaim, is just a few steps away. Modern yet discreet, boutique yet spacious, it is positioned in a remote valley and is an idyllic spot a world away from more touristy parts of Cornwall.
THE BEDROOMS: The Llawnroc Hotel’s 18 rooms are all graced with modern artwork and bespoke furnishings, but their immediate impression is of their size. Each room is different, but all work with the same vivid palette of gold, purple and black. The large bed takes centre stage, but it’s the view, which stretches out across the ocean and down to sleepy Gorran Haven, that is the real winner. Ask for a room with a balcony, upon which an afternoon tipple is a delight. The rooms also come with Playstation, wide-screen television and an iPod dock.
GET THERE: A regular service runs between Paddington and St Austell on First Great Western Trains, after which The Llawnroc is a ten minute drive; fi rstgreatwestern.co.uk
THE BATHROOM: Sliding glass doors mean that from the bathroom, the endless sea, the quaint village and a proudly-billowing Cornish fl ag, are all visible.
PRICE TAG:Suites with a balcony start from £200, while a Sea View room is priced at £139. To book call 01726 843461 or visit thellawnrochotel.co.uk

Standing on the steps of Casta Diva and gazing upon the resplendent Lake Como lapping sleepily at its lovely shores, it hardly takes a Byronic
imagination to conjure images of the palazzo’s first resident casting her glance upon a similar scene some two hundred years previously.
Then known as the Villa Roccabruna, its owner, operatic soprano Giuditta Pasta, would have graced the same sweeping
staircase to the lake-facing palace. I imagine that squinting into the distance, she may just have caught a glimpse of the rowing boat of her opposite neighbour Vincenzo Bellini, as he bobbed into moonlit view en route to enjoy an evening of her hospitality. The sole difference between Pasta’s experience and mine? That nobody will be rowing their way back home at the end of the night, nor will anyone, inspired by my muse-like presence, pen Opera Norma. The soprano, of course, was the inspiration behind this particular
opera in which she would later sing at La Scala in Milan. I, meanwhile, have trouble crooning along in tune to songs of infinite repetition on the radio. But only there are we at variance.
But should La Pasta drop on her former abode these days, she would find the awe-inspiring view little changed, nor the luxury interior. Its spectacular position is the immediate draw of Casta Diva, which is just a ten-minute drive from the celebrated town of Como. But the 13,000sqm ‘resort’ (do not

the rocks on the vertiginous incline from the road down to the lake – entirely in sympathy with the landscape. Meanwhile for those coming with a brood in tow, there is the option to rent your own self-contained house, but with all the joys of room service at your disposal. All these options attest to why Casta Diva, the first major five star hotel to open on Lake Como for a century, is keeping the old grand dames on their toes; as evidenced by the glut of dark shades and glamorous bodies on display on our visit. The elegant international set now has an option other than La Villa D’Este.
Those of a mind to set foot outside the surrounds of the hotel should have a wander round the streets of Como, which abounds
be put off by the word; this is about as far from the traditional, all-inclusive resort as you can get) has much to offer the design conscious. There is the floating swimming pool, which no doubt during the summer months would have been a most welcome addition to the singer’s world, this portion of the lake being off-limits to swimmers. But when the weather is less conducive to sun lounging (this being a particularly verdant and mountainous part of northern Italy, Como is no stranger to persistent periods of rain), the route back to the hotel takes guests - via the 19th-century boat dock -past the indoor pool and spa, the latter of which has four treatment rooms, each designed to be spacious enough for two and dedicated to one of the four elements - plus there’s even a Himalayan salt-cave room to suit earthier tastes.
Neither would our soprano, I conjecture, turn her nose up at the Bellini terrace, nor the L’Orangerie restaurant which serves up the very finest examples of traditional local food and overlooks the water, spilling out onto a lake-teetering terrace in the warmer months.
Casta Diva is a place of infinite romance and for those so inclined, little is dreamier than settling in for a late night Prosecco on one of the many lake-facing balconies. Traditionalists may prefer the elegance of the rooms in the old palazzo, but the resort’s architects have been prudent enough to keep the new additions – large, contemporary and stylish rooms set into
with charming wine bars and informal pizzerias. Those with a head for heights should bag a place on the funicular railway, the views from the top of which are unparalleled. But a trip to Lake Como would not be complete without an exploratory boat ride, which can take the form of a private yacht hire, or hopping on local transport.
We settle on Bellagio, lauded as the jewel of the lake’s crown. Indeed, its chocolate box perfection is the reason behind its ever-expanding popularity and all its never-diminishing crowds. Nonetheless, it is worth seeing, and if you do decide to stay, the Villa Serbelloni is the neo-classical yellow-painted grand hotel that one sees straight off the boat. A more impressive and ornate breakfast room you will not see, plus there’s the Michelin-starred Mistral restaurant to sample, with its experimental cooking
featuring the likes of peacock on the menu. It is, perhaps, one for those who favour the old-fashioned in a hotel, while its views, are achingly beautiful. Perhaps, after all, one’s beloved may yet be inspired to write that aria… castadivaresort.com;+39 031 3251 www.villaserbelloni.com; +39 031 950216

STORE OF THE MONTHFOLKLORE Despite only opening in May this year, the husband-and-wife owned Folklore has already made a big impression on the ever expanding Islington interiors scene. The store is home to quirky Scandinavian brands and big names in homeware, furniture, art and lighting, with an emphasis on craft and quality. They’re charitable, too: 5% of profi ts are donated to a different not-for-profi t organisation every year. Stick them in your little black book. shopfolklore.com, 193 Upper Street, N1 1RQ
Whitechapel Gallery by Chisel & Mouse Show some architectural appreciation with these miniature works of genius by Chisel & Mouse. Each plaster model is handmade and depicts an unsung hero of British and international architecture. Our pick, of course, is the endlessly cool Whitechapel Gallery, founded in 1901 and designed by Charles Harrison Townsend. Why have a tacky Big Ben fi gurine in your living room when you can have an east-end icon? Whitechapel Art Gallery, £99, chiselandmouse.com

How does your garden grow?Garden designer and Chelsea Flower Show exhibitor Kate Gould transforms a small garden in Regent’s Park
This is a happily situated small garden, nestled between the house and its
mews buildings. After extensive renovation to the property and the addition of a large glass extension, the garden became a far more integral part of the internal living space. Accessed from two levels of the house, it is visible at all times from the kitchen, and the planting and detailing reflect these many angles of vision.
The garden was designed with the client’s existing large furniture in mind. The dining table alone is over three metres in length and a metre wide, so incorporating it into the space was a big challenge. In circumstances like these, it’s best to focus on a single bold design feature. This means you can eliminate anything ‘bitty’ in the landscape. As a result, this helps to make a small space feel larger.
The largest planting bed in the garden faces the dining table and is planted with evergreen buxus, oleander and pittosporum, which
make a great contrast with the deciduous but heavy-flowered form of hydrangea known as ‘Annabel’. These new additions are all planted around the one plant that needed to remain in the garden, a flowering crab apple tree.
In the seating area, the garden sofa is a woven all-weather wicker which sits firmly on the pebbles, backed by substantial pots planted with tall bay tree pyramids. To create a sense of depth, the mews house wall was clad in mirror-polished stainless steel and overlaid with trellis to give the illusion of space. For a sense of vertical space, an unusual glass lantern hangs over the doorway to add scale at a higher level while the seasonal planting and lavender add a touch of colour. This is very much a garden to be viewed and enjoyed all year round.

DISCOVER THE PEACEFUL ROOKFIELDSIt’s never easy to fi nd houses for sale within this architecturally celebrated Conservation Area that is discreetly nestled on Muswell Hill’s southern slopes, but with an offi ce actually within this Conservation Area, Estate Agents, Prickett & Ellis, can usually help.
The Collins family, the Victorian occupiers of the country house on the site, started development in 1906, and as followers of the Arts & Crafts and Garden Suburb movements insisted on open country style landscaping in their efforts to provide a relief from the expanding urban sprawl.
Fortunately, as it happens, Hornsey County Council didn’t agree with this vision which is why many of the roads remain unadopted by the Local Authority to this day. The management and maintenance of the delightful country lanes, closes and avenues is therefore organised by the residents themselves.
One of the rare, earlier and larger Edwardian end houses has just become available for sale on Rookfi eld Avenue. Some stylish Arts & Crafts features remain in this

Property Acquisitions
With an ever-increasing tough economic climate, finding the right property
in the right area is key
H ampstead, Maida Vale, St Johns Wood, Kensington, Notting Hill gate etc. are all areas that offer a wide range of properties offering both
excellent local services and transport links in and out of the capital, with each area holding its own individual character and charm.
Having lived and worked in these areas now for over 15 years, I cannot imagine living anywhere else.
I am sure most people will have endured the poor estate agent experience, I too experienced this first hand when I was searching for my first London property in the late 1990’s… My experience was so poor, i.e being shown out of budget, in the wrong area and, in general, properties that did not meet my needs, that I decided to become an estate agent.
Having first worked for a leading Hampstead agent, I then moved into property development and investment. After we hit tough economic times in 2008 (and with a global recession biting) I listened to clients and colleagues about how tough it was finding the right property in the right area at the right price.
At this time it was decided to move the company more towards helping buyers to focus on search services and representing buyers directly who wanted to buy in prime London areas.
We ensure buyers access to an extensive list of property contacts, believing in the mantra that “the customer is king”.
Having been on both sides of the fence and now focusing on search, I love the day-to-day challenges and variety of buyers we represent, within the prime London areas in which we operate.
What a year it has been for London, following the ending of the Olympics and the historic Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, I am confident the feel-good factor seen in the capital throughout the summer will continue to boost the London property market into the Autumn and beyond, offering both local and overseas investors solid investments both short and long-term.NPA020 7504 1315www.NPAproperty.com,[email protected]
