Year 12 Valedictory Dinner The Year 12 students have all completed their end of year exams with the last exam being Indonesian on Wednesday 22nd November. On Monday 27th November, Oberon High School formally farewelled the students at the Valedictory Dinner at ‘The Pier’, which was a fantastic evening for all that attended. Thank you to Mrs Pike and Ms Kelly for their efforts in organising this event. We look forward to hearing of the VCE results which are released on Friday 15th December. School for Student Leadership 2018 Interviews were held on Tuesday 21st November to select the three male and three female Year 9 students that will have the opportunity to spend six weeks in China in Term 4, 2018 as part of the DET School for Student Leadership Program.. Congratulations to Darcy Mcknight, Summer McKinnon, Abbey Geddes, Morgan Williams, Will Stiles and Max Brownbridge. The selection panel which consisted of staff members and Year 10 students who had previously attended the School for Student Leadership program, reported to me that the way that all students who applied for this opportunity presented themselves was outstanding, making the selection process a very difficult one. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Congratulations to Year 9 student Lachie Bath who qualified to compete in the nine hole event on the same course as the Australian Open Golf championship was being held last Saturday. Lachie not only competed but won the competition, beating other qualifiers from around the country. Well done Lachie!
Congratulations to Year 12 student Emily Kinross-Smith who received her Queen's Scout award at Government House on October 28th. It was jointly presented by the Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Linda Dessau OAM and her husband Mr Anthony Howard QC. The Queen's Scout award is the highest achievement of a youth member of the scouting movement. The Queen's Scout Award represents hours of dedicated development in areas including service to the community, leadership, personal growth and outdoor adventure. The 2015 Great Victorian Bike Ride, promotion and fundraising for the Vinnies Community Sleepout and training and participating in multiple school cross-country championships were some of the activities that helped Emily to attain this award. Well done Emily!
Last Friday all of our Year 7 students participated in Deakin’s Mission Possible Challenge- a day to introduce students to a university setting and explore future pathways through hands-on activities. Competition was hot like the weather for the Challenge event which saw small teams of students searching the Waurn Ponds campus for clues to crack the code. The ultimate winners were a trail blazing team from 7B. In the afternoon students were able to select 2 workshops from Architecture, Engineering, Occupational Therapy and Sports Science. Students were challenged to design and build sustainable newspaper sky scrapers, create egg-citing contraptions to protect eggs from great heights, guide one another blind folded up stairs and complete simple tasks one handed as well as leap and sprint using world class technology to track their progress. The Deakin Ambassadors were particularly impressed with the behaviour, motivation and insightful questions asked by our students. A huge thank you to the DEAP team for staging such a valuable and timely experience for our students. And a big shout out to the Year 7 teachers and Aides for their work on the day.
