Principal's News (Week 4)
2 Minute Drop Off Zone
We deal with the issue of the correct use of our 2 minute drop off/pick up zone on a daily basis, fielding complaints that parents/caregivers are parking there for an extended length of time and often leaving their vehicles to collect their children.
Here is some information direct from the Queensland Government, Transport Department website.
Please read it carefully and adhere to the parking restrictions.
Drop-off and pick-up areas
Drop-off and pick-up areas, where you can quickly set down and pick up your children, are common outside schools (always on the school side of the road). They create a safe environment for children and keep traffic moving. Drop-off and pick-up areas are signed with passenger loading zone signs or 2 minute parking signs. These signs mean you have a maximum of 2 minutes to drop off or collect your children.
How they work
There can often be queues at drop-off and pick-up areas outside schools.
When using a drop-off and pick-up area you:
* must use the area like a quick moving taxi rank
* need to move forward in the queue of vehicles to the signed area
* can get out of your vehicle to quickly help your children get in and out safely (once in the signed area)— however you must not walk away from your vehicle
* are only allowed 2 minutes in the signed area (if you take any longer you can be fined)— if your children are not ready to get straight into your vehicle at pick-up time, you will need to
drive round the block and queue to enter the area again
* should only let your children out once you have pulled into the signed area (it is dangerous to let them out while waiting in a queue)
* should teach your children to look out for your vehicle and to get in quickly when you pull up
* must enter front in (never reverse).
Advantages of drop-off and pick-up areas
Drop-off and pick-up areas help to make school zones safe because:
* children are dropped off and picked up close to the school’s entrance (so they do not need to cross any roads)
* they reduce traffic jams around the school (as parents and carers come and go faster than if they were to park and walk into the school grounds)
* younger (non-school aged) children can stay in vehicles while their older siblings are dropped off and picked up—they do not need to walk, or be pushed or carried, to the
school’s entrance.
We need to eliminate the unsafe and illegal use of our 2 minute drop off zone. As a community we need to be proactive and you can do this by Contacting your council (http://www.dsdip.qld.gov.au/local-government-directory.html) to report an illegally or dangerously parked vehicle, or by contacting the police and giving them the number plate of the offending car/s.
Release of 2015 NAPLAN student reports and test results
Purpose
To provide schools with information about the release of the 2015 NAPLAN test results and the timelines for checking and querying school data.
Background
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) is legislated to administer and report on the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). All marking of the 2015 NAPLAN papers has been completed. Schools were provided with the raw data for the literacy and numeracy tests on 13 July.
Information
NAPLAN individual student reports will be sent home on Friday 7 August.
The national analysis of the NAPLAN results will be released to the public in two stages — the 2015 Summary Report on 5 August and the 2015 National Report at a later date.
The 2015 Summary Report will show results at each year level and for each test by state or territory and nationally. It will be available from the National Assessment Program website: www.nap.edu.au/results_and_reports/national-reports.html.

Learning Journey
Our staff at Cranbrook walked around and observed other teachers learning journeys on Monday. We are striving for 'assessment literate learners' that are fully aware of what their assessment tasks are and everything they need to know and be able to do at the beginning of the unit of work. Students will be able to articulate what they are learning and explain their learning using the learning journey in their classrooms. Feel free to visit your child’s classroom and see what their learning journey is starting to look like
Reef Guardian School
Congratulations to 3A who won Week 3 Waste Free Wednesday.
Every Wednesday Cranbrook State School will be encouraging litterless lunches. As a Reef Guardian school we will be trying to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce through #wastefreewednesday and offering a class reward each week on parade. Please have a discussion with your child about trying to reduce the amount of waste they produce. We are asking for ALL rubbish to be placed in the buckets and not taken home as this does not solve the problem of producing less waste. From here we will endeavour to move into composting and recycling.
Below are some ideas to start thinking about.
Lunch is packed in a reusable box or bag. (A paper or plastic bag counts if you use it again.)
Uneaten foods are not thrown away but kept in the lunch box/bag to be eaten later.
Partially-eaten foods are left in the lunch box/bag to be finished later or thrown away at home. (These foods should be taken home in a reusable container like a sturdy zip lock bag or a yogurt container with a lid or other plastic container.)
The lunch contains very little trash (no soiled paper napkins, chip bags, or plastic wrap, for example).
Recyclable containers/materials (aluminium cans and foil, #1 or #2 plastic bottles) are still in your lunch to be recycled at home.

Resource Centre News (Week 4)
Michael Salmon – Author/illustrator visit
What a laugh author/illustrator Michael Salmon was! Cranbrook students were entertained by Michael’s amazing cartoon drawing skills and heard how he developed book characters from events in his personal life. Turning his skate boarding dog, Bobo, into a superhero who saves the world, the monster that ate all of Canberra’s iconic buildings and Surfer Joe who was about to be eaten by a shark, were just a few that he shared. Michael drew caricatures of 4 very brave students and then allowed 2 students to draw a cartoon of him. We all thought the cartoons of Michael Salmon were very realistic!! Thank you to all the students who attended, we hope you enjoyed the experience. All of Michael Salmon’s drawings and books are on display in the Resource Centre for the next few weeks.

P&C Spot (Week 4)
The P&C Spot
Hi all.
It is our aim to try to communicate to our community, the discussion points for the following P&C meeting. Everyone is welcome…..you may come along and join in the discussion, however, only members are eligible to vote. Joining is simple and is done on the night, as the last agenda item. Our next meeting is Monday, 17 August at 6.30pm. One thing we will be discussing is our current uniform dress. As a P&C, we have made the decision to discontinue the current check material. Surveys have gone out to our Prep – 2 parents and we will be collating the results of those and having a discussion
as to:
i) not have a dress option OR
ii) incorporate a new design, either a red/white/blue check or a plain red/white/blue option
We’ll also be looking at who we are going to use for our Bookpacks this year. Any feedback on how we’ve previously operated and who we’ve used, will be welcome.
As the weeks go on, we’ll keep you updated on various other topics that may be presented on the night.
Don’t forget TASTY TREAT TUESDAY! Each Tuesday until (and including) week 9, we’ll have an extra special ‘treat’ to be sold at the tuckshop. It could be a dotty cookie, or perhaps a brownie or maybe even a mini cheesecake!! Products will only be 50c/$1.

Cowboys Adopt-a-School - Ethan Lowe's Visit Friday 24th July
During Ethan's last visit to Cranbrook State School he spent time in the hall with Mrs McMinn and students from 1C. He spoke to the children about what it takes to become an elite sportsperson, and gave them this advice, "It doesn't matter what you are doing, always do it the best that you can!"
He also played a game of evasion with the students, where they had to practice using the skills of agility, evasion and peripheral vision as balls were rolled from all directions for the students to dodge.
Cranbrook State School would like to acknowlege the sponsors of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 2015 Adopt-a-School Program.
