Abstract

My project was about crystallization, and about how to make crystals with just sugar and water heated.

Question:

Can crystals be grown along apiece of string?

Hypothesis

A super saturated solution of sugar will form sugar crystals along a piece of string overtime.

Materials

A paper clip A piece of string A glass jar A pencil A electric pot 1 cup(440ml)of water 2 cups(880ml)of sugar A ruler for stirring

Observation-Week #1

Crystals began to form on the top of the solution.

Pictures

Crystals also began forming at the bottom of the jar as well as the top.

Procedure 1. Tie the paper clip to one end of the string. 2. Hang the string into the jar so that the paper clip hangs just

above the bottom of the jar. Tie the other end of the string to the pencil at this length and remove the string from the jar.

3. Poured the water into the electric pot and begin heating the water..

4. Add the sugar to the electric pot a cup at a time stirring with a ruler to dissolves sugar.

5. Keep adding sugar to stirring slowly, until no more will dissolves. 6. Place a metal utensil into the jar, then pour the super saturated

sugar solution into the jar, leaving about a inch of air at the top of the jar.

7. Let the paper clip end of the string drop into the supersaturated sugar solution. Balance the pencil over the jar to keep the string steady.

8. Placed the jar cool somewhere it will not be disturbed. Examined it once a week or two weeks.

Background Research

Crystals are made up from sugar and snow and you can make it out of hot water and dissolved salt. They can be formed in many ways.

How are crystals used?

CRYSTALS allow people to get snow flakes and have been around for thousands of eons. They are unique in that they have a geometrically perfect atomic structure. Quartz crystals are a natural substance formed from the movement of the earth’s crust. Quartz crystals are used today in many appliances because of their electrical properties

Results

As the water evaporated crystals began forming. During the first week, crystals formed on the top of the solution, then I noticed crystals forming on the bottom. The crystals were much larger than the sugar crystals I used. Eventually I was not able to remove the string and paper clip.

Conclusion

The crystals are growing every where and became as hard as glass overtime.
