2. What is Abstractionism? Based largely around 3 artists-Wassily Kandinsky, KazimirMalevich, and Piet Mondrian Time period is approximatelyfrom late 1800s into the early1900s, intertwined with manyother time periods. Influences: chemistry, physics, Kandinsky Red Ovalpsychology, philosophy, poetry, and music 3. Meaning Abstractionism is a departure from reality Relationships of forms and colors Forms: institutional, emotional, organic, curvilinear, decorative, romantic, or focuses on themystical Artists draw their inner world 4. Meaning Pure abstraction is nonobjective and nonrepresentational Figurative abstractionsrepresent non visual things-sound emotion, spiritual Figurative abstractionssimplifications of reality, where detail is eliminatedfrom recognizable objectsleaving only some degree ofrecognizable form. A Peasant In The Field (1928) Malevich 5. De Stijl Movement Movement within theabstractionism era Founded by Theo van Doesburg, aDutchman, in 1917 Believed that artists should give off adepersonalized feeling Used only primary colors andstraight lines to convey elements ofnature Red and Blue Chair designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1917 6. De Stijl Movement Connected to geometricabstractionism, alldecoration except colorwas eliminated Piet Mondrian was a partof this movement Influenced the Bauhausmovement of the 1920s Composition with Yellow, Blue, and Red, 193742, Piet Mondrian 7. De Stijl MovementTheo van Doesburg, ArithmetischeCompositie (1924). 8. Kazimir Malevich He was Born on February 23,1973 in Russia He studied at the MoscowSchool of Painting, Sculptureand Architecture from 1904 to1910 and in the studio of FedorRerberg in Moscow (19041910). In 1915, Malevich laid down thefoundations of Suprematism Pioneer of geometricabstractionism 9. Suprematism Art movement focused onfundamental geometric forms(in particular the square andcircle and cross) Founded by Malevich This movement in artisticexpression came when Russiawas in a revolutionary state, ideas were in ferment, and theold order was being sweptawaySuprematist Painting: Eight Red Rectangles,1915 10. Suprematism Malevich created this in order todefy normal reason and tosearch for the zero degree, where something is no longerart- circle, square, cross The variety of shapes, sizes andangles creates a sense of depthin these compositions, makingthe squares, circles andrectangles appear to be movingin spaceSuprematist Composition, 1916 11. Paintings by MalevichBlack Square (Malevich, 1913), State RussianMuseum, St. Petersburg Female half figure 12. Paintings by MalevichThe wedding (1907) Peasant woman, dynamic 13. Abstractionism Facts Abstractionism takes more though than bright colors. It doesnt relate to anything external or try to looklike something. Its a type of art that is non-objective or nonrepresentational. Represents things that arent visual, such as anemotion, sound, or spiritual experience. 14. Black and Violet (1923) 15. Composition VIII (1923) 16. Abstractionism Facts Continued Eliminated from recognizable objects, leaving onlyessence or some degree of recognizable form. Artists in this theory use a simpler combination ofcolors, including black, muted grays, yellow, red, andgreen. Yellow, red, and green are used to make small shapesstand out. 17. Wassily Kandinsky Born December 16th, 1866 Influential Russian painter andart theorist. He is credited with painting the first purely-abstractworks. Was one of the fathers of abstract art. The man who eliminated the object. 18. Early-period work, Munich-Schwabing with the Church of St. Ursula (1908) 19. Blue Rider Period (1911-1914) Kandinskys paintings from this period are large, expressive colored masses evaluatedindependently from forms and lines. His writing in The Blue Rider Almanac and the treatise "On the Spiritual In Art" (which was released around the same time) were both a defense and promotion of abstract art and an affirmation that all forms of art were equally capable of reaching a level of spirituality. 20. Der Blaue Reiter (1903) 21. Return to Russia Continued.. He painted little during this period. His spiritual, expressionistic view of art was ultimatelyrejected by the radical members of the Institute as tooindividualistic and bourgeois. 22. Composition VIIaccording to Kandinsky, themost complex piece he ever painted (1913) 23. The Bauhaus (19221933) Kandinsky taught the basic design class for beginnersand the course on advanced theory at the Bauhaus. Geometrical elements took on increasing importancein both his teaching and paintingparticularly thecircle, half-circle, the angle, straight lines and curves. 24. Composition X (1939) 25. Geometric Abstractionism Geometric Abstractionismis characterized by non-naturalistic imagery, typically geometrical shapessuch as circles, squares, triangles, rectangles In a sense - by containingabsolutely no reference to,or association with, thenatural world - it is thepurest form of abstraction. Kazimir Malevich, Black Circle, 1913 26. Geometric Abstractionism Important Aspects ofGeometric Abstractionism Simple geometrical Shapes Triangles Rectangles Squares Circles Lines No natural forms Repetition Patterns Distinct colors Flat picture plane(no perspective) Auguste Herbin, Alphabet Plastique II, 1950 27. Piet Mondrian (18721944) The main creator and themost importantproponent of geometricabstractionism was DutchArtist Piet Mondrian. A member of the De Stijl(the Style) group whichalso included Theo vanDoesburg, Bart van derLeck, and Vilmos Huszr. 28. Piet Mondrian Mondrians work wasintended to convey "absolute reality. He portrayed the world as the pure underlying geometric forms and related according to the vertical-horizontal principle of straight lines and pure spectral colors. 29. Piet Mondrian Mondrians developed hissignature geometric stylebetween 1915 and 1920. He erased of all referencesto the real world, choosingto focus on the geometricdivision of the canvasthrough black vertical andhorizontal lines of variedthickness, which hecomplemented by blocks ofprimary colors, particularlyblue, red, and yellow. 30. Cubism to AbstractionismPiet Mondrian, Red Tree, 1908Piet Mondrian, Gray Tree, 1912 Mondrians paintings evolve logically and illustrate clear periodsof influence art movements such as Impressionism, and especiallyCubism. 31. Piet Mondrian, Composition A: Composition with Black, Red, Gray,Yellow & Blue - 1920 Mondrian believed that his art represented the essence of spiritual energy. Mondrian aimed to show through his art the balance of forces that governs nature and the universe. 32. Piet Mondrian, Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow,1930 Mondrianattempted torepresent the worldthrough vertical andhorizontal lineswhich to himrepresented the twoopposing forces: thepositive and thenegative, themasculine and thefeminine, thedynamic and thestatic. 33. Piet Mondrian, Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1943 After moving to NewYork, Mondrianbecame moreadventurous withuse of varioussquares of colors toform his lines whichpreviously weredistinctly black. Healso began paintingunbounded squaresof colors as well asoverlapping squares. 34. Legacy Mondrian is known as thefather of geometricabstractionism, and is veryfamous for his numerousdistinct red, blue, andyellow paintings with blacklines. His concept has becomevery successfulcommercially. His designsare widely imitated inPiet Mondrian Nike Dunk Low SBadvertising andcommercial design. 35. Legacy Mondrians work influencedmany artists who worked withgeometric abstractionismincluding Theo van Doesburg,Wassily Kandinsky, KazimirMalevich, Barnett Newman,Kenneth Noland, BridgetRiley, and AlexanderRodchenko. Geometric abstractionismsignificantly influenced theop art movement. Mosaic
