Maintaining an odditiies collection can get a little gross, especially if your “preserved two-headed pig” isnt so preserved anymore. We did our research on verious ways on how to properly preserve your specimen or “re-preserve” in the case of your rotting twin pig. There seems to be hundreds of mixtures and formulas that collectors swear by, so we narrowed it down to our favorite

An early 1930�s Dental Phantom. Made of an aluminum skull with steel gums, this piece was used to teach dental students about the anatomy of the jaw. Students could practice removing, drilling, and filling teeth, without the consequences of working on a live patient.

Allow for specimen to sit in Bouin’s Fluid [f ixative] for 12 hours to ensure

durabil i ty and lasting preservation.

In separate comtainer, combine Formalin and water at a ratio of 1:10.

Optional- Add 1 teaspoon of glycerin to every quart of mixture to preserve color of specimen.

After specimen has been in f ixative for 12 hours, remove and

put in alcohol bath and soak no more than 2 minutes. Place in

clean jar or the container you are using.

Through our research in finding some of the most interesting medical tools, we came across some wildest in the field of dentistry.

Used to pry the mouth open, the jaw clamp as since been toned down in the severity. The clamp could be adjusted to expand the mouth while performing surgery.

When a show l ike “Bones” needs, wel l , bones, Hol lywood cal ls on Burbank nat ive Gary Robbins. Same

goes for werewolves, sneaker-c lad bison and Stuart L i t t le 's stand- in al l can be found in an unassuming warehouse and workshop located in downtown Burbank across f rom a comedy club. After walk ing under the giant shark wi th someone's legs in i ts jaws, you're greeted at Bischoff 's Taxidermy and Animal FX by a recept ion area resplendent wi th serpents, cr i t ters, g iant mamoths, creepy-crawl ies, and a nice marr ied couple who welcome you into their business in the same way a mom and pop might invi te you in to sel l you shoes or some baked goods.But at Bischoff 's , the craf ts of Gary and Mary Robbins are of a macabre sort . And i t 's the go-to source of Hol lywood's

animaltaxidermy and other taxidermied animals needs.“What 's fun is making up the custom orders — especial ly when they want blood and guts,” Gary Robbins said.That 's why, in his shop, roadki l l has i ts place next

to beaut i fu l ly pr ist ine fox pel ts, mounted moose heads and a stuffed bear. The thousands of

He 's a l so aff ixed severa l a l l ig ator heads to one body for an episode of “Dexter,” and on at leas t one occas ion rocker Mar i lyn Manson asked for a lambskin jacket .The mark of a t r ue tax ider mist , Robbins says, i s one who constant ly obser ves an imals in the wi ld to understand how they move and how the i r musc les work . He orders a pe l t and shapes a body

for m to match i t , a lways measur ing and re-s iz ing.When

1879 Desk mask is plaster cast of an unknown man. Before proper preservation and photographs were able to document the bodies of the dead, plaster casts were made so the family could identify the dead person.
