Head coach profiles

AC Milan: Carlo AncelottiDate of birth: 10 June 1959Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC MilanCoaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only five people – the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard – tohave lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the mosthighly-regarded coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his secondseason at the AC Milan helm - he would have added a second but for Liverpool FC's stunning fightback two yearslater - and has added Serie A and Coppa Italia medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is proving every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started outat AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemedhim too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at San Siro in five years of unyielding successwhich brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996 andwent on to Parma FC who he guided to an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus andalthough he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to San Siro in summer 2001. Therehe thrived, winning the UEFA Champions League, Coppa Italia and UEFA Super Cup in his second season andcompleting the set with the Serie A title in 2003/04. He guided the Rossoneri to second in the next two campaigns, although they were subsequently demoted to third last term following the Italian sporting fraud tribunal. In March, heextended his contract until summer 2008.

Celtic FC: Gordon StrachanDate of birth: 9 February 1957Playing carer: Dundee FC, Aberdeen FC, Manchester United FC, Leeds United AFC, Coventry City FCCoaching career: Coventry City FC, Southampton FC, Celtic FC.

An energetic and talented midfielder who was capped 50 times by Scotland and helped Aberdeen FC to win the UEFACup Winners' Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson, Gordon Strachan began in management while still a player at Englishtop-flight club Coventry City FC in November 1996.

He helped Coventry avoid relegation and then ended his on-field career aged 40 to concentrate on coaching, keepingthe club in the Premiership until 2001. Strachan was sacked early in the following season but was swiftly appointedat Southampton FC - who he again kept in the top division against the odds. In 2002/03 he took them to eighth placein the Premiership and the FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Arsenal FC but earning a UEFA Cup berth. Strachan announcedearly the next season that he would step down at the end of the campaign for personal reasons and left his role inMarch 2004 to concentrate on media work.

Always a man in demand due to his tactical astuteness and motivational skills, in summer 2005 Strachan was giventhe tough task of succeeding Martin O'Neill at Celtic FC. Strachan's reign began with a disastrous 5-0 loss at FCArtmedia in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first leg, and a 4-0 win in the return could notsalvage their European campaign. But Celtic regrouped and won the Scottish Premier League in record time and alsolifted the Scottish League Cup.

UEFAUCLDoBNat.Name482316.10.1964AUTKonrad Plautz

Austrian referee Konrad Plautz, a regular on the UEFA Champions League scene as a member of UEFA's élite groupof match officials, is an enthusiastic director and actor with a local theatre group - the perfect antidote to his hecticschedule. A toolmaker from the small Alpine town of Navis, Plautz began taking charge of matches as a teenager in1984.

Starting with the youth sector, he began his rise through the ranks at regional level before heading into the Austriannational leagues - fulfilling an objective he had set himself at the outset of his career. Plautz reached Austrian Bundesligastandard after six years, before getting his FIFA international badge in 1996. That same year he was chosen to refereethe UEFA European Under-16 Championship final in Vienna in which Portugal beat France.

In 2005/06, he took charge of Real Betis Balompié's first game in the UEFA Champions League, a 2-1 home defeatby Liverpool FC and was given another five appointments. The most important of these was Arsenal FC's 1-0 first-legvictory against Villarreal CF in the semi-finals. A veteran of two FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns, Plautz hasexperience of UEFA European Championship qualifiers back to March 1999 and took charge of the September 2006meeting of Finland and Portugal. He is naturally established as one of his country's most respected officials, refereeingone of the top fixtures in the Austrian Bundesliga almost every weekend.

Competition facts

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have come back from a first-leg deficit to go through to the next stage on 16 occasions. The biggest losingmargin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2003/04 when the Spanish club foughtback from a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan to win 4-0 at home and progress to the semi-finals.

• Twelve ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including five where the triumphant team lost the first leg.Last season, Villarreal CF beat Rangers FC and FC Internazionale Milano by this method in the first knockout roundand quarter-finals respectively.

• Manchester United FC hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 4-0 home success against FC Porto in the1996/97 quarter-finals, eventually going through by that margin after a goalless return.

• Only five ties have gone to penalties. Four of these have come in finals – 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2005. The onlytwo-legged tie to be decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• In all, ten ties have required extra-time. Along with the five ties mentioned above, four quarter-finals and one firstknockout round encounter have also needed an additional 30 minutes in an attempt to determine a winner.

• No new countries are represented in the knockout phase of this season's competition but 17 nations have had teamsparticipate at least once since 1992/93. Three clubs - AS Roma, Celtic FC and LOSC Lille Métropole - are all appearingfor the first time.

• Real Madrid CF have set a new record for knockout stage qualification in successive seasons. This is the tenthstraight season since 1997/98 that they have made it to this stage, moving them ahead of Manchester United, whoappeared nine times in a row between 1996/97 and 2004/05. Overall, they have now played in the knockout stageeleven times, one more than United and FC Bayern München.

• The 2004/05 first knockout round encounter between Lyon and Werder Bremen featured more goals over its twolegs than any previous tie – a total of 12 as Lyon defeated Bremen 10-2.

• There has never been a tie ending goalless after two legs. Seven have finished 1-0 on aggregate, Arsenal FCfeatured in two of them in 2005/06 as they overcame Madrid and Villarreal on their way to the final.

• Athens was awarded the 23 May 2007 final after a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee at its meeting inTallinn, Estonia in April 2005. The Greek capital will play host to its first European final since the venue was rebuiltto stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions Leagueshowpiece of 1993/94, when Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Prior to 1994, Athens also saw theEuropean Champion Clubs' Cup lifted in 1982/83, the year after the venue was first inaugurated. On that occasion,Hamburger SV beat Juventus FC 1-0. The ground also staged the 1986/87 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when AFCAjax were 1-0 winners against 1. FC Lokomotiv Leipzig.

UEFA club competition honours• European Champion Clubs' Cup: 1966/67

Ten-year record (including current season)• Celtic have yet to make a significant impact in the UEFA Champions League but after their early exit after the firstgroup stage in 2002/03 qualifying the Glasgow club moved across to the UEFA Cup and promptly went all the wayto the final. After a titanic battle in Seville, and despite Henrik Larsson's double, the Scottish side eventually lost 3-2to FC Porto on the silver goal rule. This season, however, the Scottish side will compete in the knockout stage of theUEFA Champions League for the first time as their three victories from their six outings in the group stage provideda second-placed finish, three points behind Manchester United FC.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Away goals rule: For ties in the first knockout round, quarter-finals and semi-finals, the team which scores thegreater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score thesame number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If thisprocedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extratime of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams scorethe same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored duringextra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which team qualifies.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.

Boruc looks to be San Siro heroCeltic FC goalkeeper Artur Boruc has already shown he takes big reputations with a pinch of salt. Now he is warningAC Milan that their star-studded lineup will not be given an easy ride when the Scottish title-holders visit San Siro fortheir UEFA Champions League first knockout round second leg.

Cult heroBoruc became a cult hero at Celtic Park after saving a late penalty from Manchester United FC's Louis Saha duringthe group stage which enabled Celtic to hold on for a 1-0 victory and reach the knockout round for the first time. ThePoland No1 continued to thwart the efforts of Europe's finest with an outstanding display in last week's 0-0 draw withMilan in Glasgow.

Birthday treatNow the former Legia Warszawa custodian, who celebrated his 27th birthday on the day of that shut-out, is determinedto frustrate the likes of Alberto Gilardino and Kaká again as Celtic look to create more history. Boruc told uefa.com:"Names don't win games so we can win - hopefully we'll keep a clean sheet there and score a goal. We focused a loton not conceding [at home] and maybe that was why we were not so attacking. A draw was fair - they created a fewchances just like us. I'm pleased with my performance and looking forward to the next game."

Team beliefBoruc's exploits and the rising confidence of Celtic's defenders have not gone unnoticed by team-mates either.Commenting on the keeper's fine first-half stop from Gilardino, striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink said: "It was agreat save - he's saved us a few times this season. They had one big chance and didn't create a lot more, which isa very big thing for our defenders. Of course we hoped to win but we didn't give a lot away and didn't concede a goal,so that was very positive."

Winning streakThe 28-year-old Dutch international, who himself rose to the big occasion when scoring against United at Old Traffordon his European debut for Celtic, believes his team can deny the Rossoneri a fifth straight quarter-final appearance. He said: "Anything can happen in football and I hope Milan give us some space in Italy. We hope to take advantagebut it's going to be a very difficult game. We don't even have to win at San Siro, a 1-1 draw would be enough, butobviously we want to win." If Celtic continue to play with the spirit they have shown throughout this campaign, andthe likes of Vennegoor of Hesselink and Boruc shine again, Gordon Strachan's side could yet extend their history-makingrun – ending Milan's in the process.
