When refrigerant leaks from your

system, it reduces the operating

efficiency of the unit.

This causes your air-conditioning

system to work harder to make up

for the loss in Freon to keep your

home cool.

It’s like trying to fill a balloon

with a pin hole in it.

You can blow all the air into

you want, but it’s going to

continue to leak out through

that pin hole requiring you to

blow it up continually to keep it

inflated.

Your air-conditioning unit exerts

more pressure on your

compressor, the motor, and

internal parts as it seeks to extract

hot air out of the room.

How can you determine if your

unit is leaking?

Look for ice around the unit,

particularly around the

connections, the drier, and A

Coils.

If you’re unable to detect the

leak, contact a licensed HVAC

specialist and have an

inspection completed.

They are able to test the

pressure on the system and

may use dyes to detect leaks

not readily found by a

homeowner.

has a variety of tools and

equipment to detect leaks.

Air should flow

through your vents

without obstruction.

A good place to

start would be with

the air filter.

This is found near the motor of

your unit, usually in the bottom

panel or on the side of the unit

leading to the duct work.

As the unit pulls air from the

room, dust particles, pet and

human hairs and other debris

may be picked up along the

way.

This should get trapped by the

air filter.

Over time, this dust builds up

and restricts the smooth air

flow through the filter.

This causes less air to

circulate.

The fan also must work harder

to pull air through the clogged

filter.

For this reason, change your

filter a minimum of once every

year around winter just before

the heating season.

It is better to change it through

both the heating cycle in the

winter and the cooling cycle in

the summer.

The result is greater efficiency

and less wear and tear on your

unit.

As the house gets cooler, raise

the thermostat a degree or two.

Each degree you raise the

thermostat saves about five

percent off your utility bill.

Inspect For Poorly Sealed Duct

Your air ducts are connected to

your HVAC unit with screws.

Usually there is a felt gasket.

This is followed up with duct

tape and metal tape to seal the

connection for air leaks.

Check for air loss at these

connections.

This simple procedure can also

save in expensive a/c repair

and prevent further damage to

your system.

Prepare For the Government

Mandated Change

In 2006, the federal government

passed the Clean Air Act.

The Act requires that all HVAC

units are upgraded to the new

r410/A Puron refrigerant. Freon is

being phased out. The deadline is

2020.

This means you’ll be

converting your old unit or

purchasing a new one. Don’t

wait until the last minute.
