Advantage to using XW charge controllers
Schneider Electric offers two models of Maximum Power Point
Tracking (MPPT) solar charge controllers. The MPPT60-150
provides up to 60A of DC current to the battery, and
accommodates up to 150VDC from the array . The MPPT80-600
provides up to 80A to the battery, and accommodates up to
600VDC array voltage.
Effectively supplying the battery with solar power

Grid tie inverters – How they work
Page 7Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
Why AC couple in the first place?
• Most already have a PV inverter
• Desire backup
• Better efficiency
Page 8Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
Why AC couple in the first place?
• Easy
• Less expensive
Page 9Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
Page 10Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
Page 11Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
• Frequency shift for non-curtailing
• Grid tie inverter must shut down
• Aux port may be used to drive
external AC disconnect relay
Page 12Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
• Frequency shift for curtailing
• Grid tie inverter reduces output
• Power continues to flow at load demand
Page 13Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
AC coupling with generator?Typically not, unless special application
• Incorporate disconnect
relay
• Relay coil activates by
generator AC
• Limited to equal power ratings
• 60A Pass-Thru limit
• Consider battery charge current
Page 14Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
What if I have many PV inverters?Limits of AC coupling
Page 15Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
AC coupling off grid?Possible with curtailment
• Off grid designs may spec AC coupling
• Battery regulation not ideal if non-curtailing
Page 16Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
AC coupling off gridLoads should equal solar production in real time for greatest efficiency
Page 17Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
AC coupling off gridStored energy should support loads during non-solar hours
Page 18Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
AC coupling off gridLet’s compare losses
• > load means < efficiency
Page 19Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
DC coupling off gridLet’s compare losses
• MPPT80 = 96% efficiency
• MPPT60 = 98% efficiency
• Reliable grid
• New install vs. existing
• Amount of PV
• Size of battery bank
Page 20Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
ConsiderationsManaging customer expectations
• Usually multi-unit XW systems
• XW sells to offset grid draw
• Cannot sell to generator
• Similar concept to Multi-Cluster
Page 21Confidential Property of Schneider Electric |
Designing around 60A pass-thru limitUtilize external transfer switch
• AC or DC coupling multi-clusters
• Community electrification
• Mini-grids
