2013 SUMMER TIME TIPS:

Attending school in the summer requires hard work and discipline; follow

some of our tips and before you know it you'll have completed another

module.

Enjoy the weather, but don't be distracted by it

Know your goals for the summer

Study outdoors

Drink plenty of water

Be in class everyday so you don't have to make up your time later

Remember, you are not alone; reach out to your classmates for

help ... your instructor, too!

Remember why you are here

Stay focused in class; it will make your studies easier

Don't forget about family and friends ... Work hard, play hard!

A TYPICAL DAY AT

JAMAICA Students are always being engaged to learn new material. Mr. Soto has his students stand and complete phlebotomy skills in

tandem with his demonstration.

One-on-one and step-by-step instructions given by Mr. Callman during phlebotomy.

Nursing Assistant students study together

and practice their skills under guidance and supervision.

Students work closely with their instructor, gaining extra practice to master the needed

knowledge and skills.

Extracurricular lectures from career services

are provided to the modules to assist in completing physicals, preparing for mock

interviews, and internship.

(Campus Director, Jamaica), is our student of the

month. Elena holds a top GPA and is a highly

driven individual. See what see said when asked a

few questions about The Allen School and being a

Medical Assistant (MA).

What drives you to be here? I want to work in

the hospital as I continue my education and

become a nurse.

How do you succeed in school? I study, do my

homework, pay attention during lectures and help

others to understand the material.

What makes being a medical assistant special?

Before coming to school I did not realize an MA

had to learn so much material. An MA really

needs to know a great deal in order to be effective

in helping others. It prepares you for all the other

possible careers in healthcare.

CLINIC DAY CHALLENGE

5TH MODULE STUDENTS

Groups of 4 or 5 students will compete with one another by:

Creating and running a clinic

Assigning roles in the office (manager, reception, phlebotomy etc.)

Creating a name for your clinic

Responding to the variety of challenges

Doing what healthcare professionals do every day

The winning team will receive a portable blood pressure cuff!

The challenge takes place:

June 19th

8:30am-11:30am

Dr. Choudhury is always there for students, always remaining calm while resolving issues,

always willing to help administration.

“As a child, I saw many people die in third world countries, particularly women during child

birth, due to insufficient treatment. This convinced me to become a physician in order to help

people in need medically. As a physician, I realized that I would love to share my knowledge of

the health care field, which led me to teaching. Allen School has given me the opportunity to

share my knowledge of the field. Teaching Allen School students has become my passion.”

BROOKLYN STUDENT-OF-THE-MONTH YUCHANYA ANDERSON

“I am a person who has made a lot of mistakes

in her life; however, it is my mistakes that

have made me the person I am today! I

currently hold an AAS in visual

communications; however, making the

decision to change my career path was an easy

one. Due to the passing of my mother, and all

that I had to deal with in caring for her, I

decided to come back to school in the

healthcare field because it is something that I

have always wanted to do.

Once I got in and got rolling, I am not

disappointed in my decision at all. Currently, I

am a 4.0 student, and I plan to continue to be

so until I graduate. I keep my grades up by

using the flashcard app on my iPhone (it is a

lifesaver!), with a study group that we created

during 1st mod here at Allen School, and by

being determined that I WON'T FAIL.”

FACULTY-OF-THE-MONTH TERRANCE RICHARDS

Terrance Richards was very instrumental in

the success of this year’s AIDS Walk. Under

his tutelage, students, faculty, and staff

helped raised over $2000 for the walk.

Events such as Cupcake Wars, Chicken and

Waffle Sales, Wings and Things, and many

more helped make that goal possible.

working with the Allen school students,

because they have a desire to do more and

excel beyond academics. My main purpose is

to educate, elevate , and motivate the

BARBARA STRUBLE

Being an exceptional student means many things far

beyond academic excellence. In health care, there is something equally important; this is CHARACTER. Barbara has shown unmatched DETERMINATION. Her DEDICATION is evident as she spends whatever time or energy is available to accomplish the many tasks of an MA student. Barbara’s KINDNESS towards her classmates is touching and incomparable. And did we mention this is always met with a smile? INTEGRITY is at the foundation of what shines in Barbara; each of these characteristics mirrors what a positive example she is to all who have the privilege of knowing her. “I can sum up my experience here at Allen School with a quote from Descartes, "I think, therefore I am!" If ever we stop learning, we stop growing, and therefore we start the process of dying. Allen School has helped me satisfy my craving for constant knowledge ... especially my need to know "why and how" everything works as it does. VIVIAN KOISTINEN

Vivian Koistinen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and an Associate’s Degree in Dental Assisting. She has 26 years of experience in the field as a Dental Assistant; maintains a Registered Dental Assistant credential from American Medical Technologist and a Certified Dental Assistant credential from the Dental Assisting National Board. Vivian has served in the career college field for 16 years as a Dental Assisting Instructor, Extern Coordinator and Evaluator, campus level Program Chair, Home Office Program Chair, and as a Home Office Education Program Director. Vivian serves on the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools and is an active member of Toastmasters International. At this time, Vivian is an adjunct instructor at the Phoenix ground campus and online, and also serves as a curriculum consultant for Cengage Learning.
