Westlake High School 2012
Academic Information
Westlake High School opened in 1971, and is a unit of the Fulton County School System. We are a four-year comprehensive high school accredited by the Georgia Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
School system graduation requirements consist of a core curriculum and additional options leading to the College Preparatory and/or Career-Technology programs of study. The total number of required units of credit cannot be waived. Students and parents should be familiar with the following terms:
Core Curriculum – areas of study in which all students must complete specific courses in order to fulfill graduation requirements
Required Course – one that is mandatory for a specific program of study
Selective Course – one of several designated courses from which a student may choose in meeting the requirements of a specific program of study
Pathway Course – a course that counts towards the total number of units required for graduation but does not apply toward particular requirements of a specific program of study
Seal – an attachment placed on a high school diploma indicating the successful completion of one or more programs of study
School Day
The school day consists of six academic periods. Each student must carry a full schedule of classes. Students enrolled in dual enrollment and internship programs are considered full-time students. The school year consists of two 18-week semesters. Students earn one-half unit of credit for each course per semester. Most courses meet for the entire school year, earning a total of one unit of credit, while some are intended as one-semester experiences.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
The Fulton County School System offers numerous Advanced Placement courses representing language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, world languages, music and visual art. Most colleges and universities award credit for specific levels of performance on the AP exams given in May. Enrollment is open to all qualified students. Completing the appropriate AP exam is mandatory in order to receive AP credit for the course. Interested students should contact an AP instructor, counselor, or the Curriculum Assistant Principal for information and application procedures. Interested students must also attend AP night, which educates parents and students on the many aspects of taking an AP class.
ACCEL Classes (formerly known as Joint Enrollment/Postsecondary Options)
Students may enroll in a four year college (ACCEL) or a technical school (Tech Prep) course and receive simultaneous credit towards their respective diploma programs. Students should initiate discussion of joint enrollment options with their counselor and should apply with their preferred institution.
Effective spring 2005, Postsecondary Options funding was replaced by the ACCEL Program, a part of the HOPE Scholarship program. All credit hours for which students receive payment shall be included in the maximum total credit that will be funded through the student’s HOPE Scholarship.
Fulton County Virtual Campus
Virtual Campus is an online learning program that provides students with a unique opportunity to take courses over the Internet rather than inside a traditional classroom. The courses are designed for students who want to make up a course or get ahead by earning additional credits towards high school graduation. (Students must see their counselor to enroll). Online courses provide flexibility, encourage personal initiative, promote interactive learning and critical thinking, and offer an intellectual challenge to selected students. For more information, please visit http://www.fulton12virtualcampus.net/
Night School Program
Students may retake courses or complete additional coursework through the Night School Program. One or two courses may be taken on the same evening. Classes meet Monday/ Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday for two hours each. Night School courses are available at Independence and McClarin High Schools on a tuition basis; registration is done through the Counseling Office.
Online Learning Programs
An educational opportunity where students can take classes through approved distance learning educational institutions may benefit some students. The following guidelines must be considered:
Students should only consider taking online courses if they cannot take the course in their regular class schedule, Night School, and/or Summer School.
Students must meet with their counselor to fill out an “Off Campus Course Request Form” before signing up for an online course.

Career-Technology Programs
Westlake offers five programs of study leading to Career-Technology or Dual Diploma Seals of Endorsement: Family Consumer Sciences, Business and Information Technology, Pre-Engineering, Broadcast and Video Production Technology and Culinary Arts.
Special Education Interrelated Resource (IRR)
Westlake High School offers a full complement of services to students with identified disabilities. The programs include team-taught classes and both regular, modified, and self-contained curriculum classes. Occupational Awareness and Planning classes are also available. Annual Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) are developed with the parent and student.
Teachers of Interrelated Resources will assist all identified students and their parents in planning the most appropriate choice of classes for 2012 - 2013. Please note that the placement of students in the self-contained curriculum limits their post secondary opportunities. Your child’s case manager will be happy to assist you with any questions.
Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)
The Talented and Gifted program at Westlake High School meets the requirements of the Georgia Department of Education and provides diverse, high-quality opportunities for the student. Based on the philosophy of nurturing the unique learning characteristics, interests, and capabilities of the gifted student, the goals of the gifted services in Fulton County are to develop:
Advanced research methods and independent study skills.
Creative thinking and creative problem-solving skills in order to be a generator of ideas and products original to the student.
Higher order and critical thinking skills.
Advanced communication skills that incorporate new techniques, materials, and formats in the development of products and ideas that will be shared with real audiences.
Cognitive skills emphasized at each level include knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, fluency, flexibility, originality, elaborative thinking, complexity, curiosity, risk taking, and imagination. Our teachers are experienced professionals who have received an endorsement in Gifted Education from the Georgia Department of Education.

Westlake High School 2012
Academic Information
The high school student has a variety of options in receiving gifted services at Westlake. The student attends advisement conferences with a TAG teacher several times a year. Each student is required to participate in at least one of the options listed in the chart below. Freshmen gifted students must attend TAG seminars. Students who do not take AP or IB classes must select another TAG option. Westlake High School's TAG program offers a challenging, unique program of study for the student through direct and indirect services as outlined below.
Work-Based Learning Programs
The Work-Based Learning Program allows qualified seniors to receive course credit for a supervised experience in business. Paid internship opportunities are available through Business Internships (BI), Career-Technology Intervention (CTI) and Youth Apprenticeship (YAP). These programs combine classroom instruction, on the job work experience, and leadership training through the Future Business Leaders of America. Participants are given release time from school to complete their work experience. Students receive supervision at the work site from their employers and the work program coordinator. Students must provide their own transportation to the internship site.

Grading Scale
All grades will be recorded on transcripts and report cards as numeric grades. The grading scale is as follows:
A = 90 and above
B = 80 – 89
C = 70 – 79
F = 69 and below
HOPE Scholarship
Currently, calculations for the HOPE Scholarship are based only on language arts, math, science, social studies, and world languages courses that meet the state core requirements. All core curriculum coursework attempted in the student’s high school career (9th-12th) will be counted toward the HOPE Scholarship cumulative grade point average, and unweighted numeric grades will be converted to the 4.0 scale.
Beginning with the Class of 2007, grades from all high school coursework in the core curriculum (language arts, math, science, social studies, and world languages), including failing grades for courses that were repeated and passed, will be counted in computing the numerical average used for determining HOPE Scholarship eligibility. Grades for Advanced Placement (AP) classes will be weighted by the HOPE Commission in determining HOPE eligibility; grades for Honors Courses will not be weighted. HOPE eligibility will require a 3.0 average.
For additional information, contact the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) at 770-724-9000 or 1-800-505-GSFC (4732), or visit www.gsfc.org or GACollege411.org.
Transcripts show the numeric grades for each reporting period and the student’s overall numeric average. The Cumulative Numeric Average is determined by adding all numeric grades together and dividing that total by the number of courses taken. Seven honors points are added to each passing grade in dual enrollment, honors, College Board Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes by the Fulton County School System.

Promotion/Retention
High School students must earn a certain number of units in order to earn promotion to the next grade level. Requirements for promotion are:
Freshman: promotion from eighth grade
Sophomore: minimum of 5 units of credit
Junior: minimum of 11 units of credit
Senior: minimum of 17 units of credit
Summer school is an extension of the previous school year; therefore, summer courses count toward promotion to the next grade level.
Graduation Participation Requirements
Beginning with the Class of 2007, only students who have earned appropriate and required credits and who have passed each of the required portions of the Georgia High School Graduation Test or EOCT equivalent will be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony.
Special education students will be permitted to participate if they have met their special education diploma requirements.

Schedule Changes
Once classes are scheduled, it is difficult to make schedule changes because many classes will have reached maximum enrollment. Students may not be enrolled in a class that is considered filled. Overloading classes constitutes a violation of State Standards and is not permitted.
If there is a need to request a schedule change, students must do so well in advance of the first semester of the school year for which the change is desired. Requests for teacher changes will not be permitted. Course changes will be granted on an “as available” basis and only when stated timelines for requests are followed.
After classes have been scheduled, requests for course changes will generally be considered only for the following reasons:
The student has failed a required course and must repeat the course.
The student has failed a course prerequisite and is not eligible to continue in the course sequence.
The student has failed to enroll in a course required for graduation.
The student demonstrates poor achievement in a prerequisite course and is advised by the both the teacher and the counselor or administrator not to enroll in a more advanced course.
There is a scheduling conflict or a course has been cancelled.
Requests for changes of a class period or lunch will not be honored. Westlake reserves the right to make adjustments to student schedules due to changes in enrollment and/or to balance class sizes.
Students enrolled in an Honors or AP class requesting a change to a regular level course are expected to complete the first semester before the change will be made and then only if the teacher recommends the change based on academic ability or if a student fails the course.
Guidance and Counseling Services
Westlake High School offers a comprehensive guidance and counseling program. The counseling staff is committed to providing services and support to students, staff, parents and the community in order to help each student achieve his/her educational, career and personal goals. The counselors help plan, implement and evaluate educational plans based on student needs. In the pre-registration process, a counselor will advise students and parents on appropriate course selection after a review of each student’s course selection based upon his/her transcript, choices, and teacher recommendations. Additionally, several times during a student’s high school years, the counselor will review the student’s progress and make sure that all requirements for graduation and requirements associated with future goals are being satisfied. Parents and students are held accountable for monitoring the student’s progress and meeting requirements to graduate.
Parents and students can request appointments with his/her assigned Counselor by calling the counseling office 404-346-6400. Parents and students are encouraged to attend parent meetings and scheduled appointments in order to build a close working relationship with the assigned counselor.
